It's amusing when these "journalists" confuse quarterly market share with install base, especially in an article citing anonymous curry sources.
I have a 7970 that is overheating and thermal throttling, I suspect due to the fans' or the thermal compound. I just purchased it and I don't want the money I invested to be wasted, so I now plan on watercooling it with a cpu water cooling kit and and adaptor braquet.
Am I fucking it up? Will I still have heat issues after that?

The only reason chips get hot is due to inadequate cooling, LONG term degridation of silicon (talking 10 plus years), or fucked up VRM's.
Considering a fucked up VRM would outright break the card, replacing thermal transfers and even a new cooler should do the trick. But does buying a watercooler shift your price into "poor decision" territory?
Short answer: It shouldn't have heat issues after a new cooler.

So, poorfag here, came into a few bucks and looking to upgrade the Geforce 8400GS in my Pentium 4HT machine. I'm not a gaymen, preferring the comfort of my emulators (nullDC, ePSXe, etc) and old fps games to anything new (Quake 3, UT99, UT2004, etc...) and it dual boots between Win7 and CentOS7.

I would like to start playing with OpenCL and CUDA programming and the 16 CUDA cores in the 8400GS just don't seem like enough to do much of anything. I'm looking at a used Geforce GT430 for about $30. What say /g/?
