The regular S series is always too early.
G5's modularity is pretty cool, but the shitty aluminium construction (over previous durable plastic) really lets it down. It's literally a gimmick phone.
S7 however is just a polished S6 with SD card, better water resistance and a new camera that tells everyone else to fuck off. It does everything right in the hardware department, touchwizz lets it down though if you're a Android Purist for some reason.

I am so vastly disappointed in my Galaxy S6, I will never own another Samsung.
The software is so fucking bad, the battery life and ram management is STILL broken, I had to return my phone for a defect because the camera shutter broke (common problem)
They promised Marshmallow before the end of the year, but its only just been sent to carriers in the last few weeks.
And of course im stuck on Verizon because I get it dirt cheap from work, so im stuck with no root and no option of roms.
My buddies G4 is so much better, and we got got on the plan around the same time.

The G5 has a removable battery, and the S7 doesn't have USB-C "because it's not mainstream".

The LG G5 is kinda ugly compared to the G4, however, but it depends on how it comes (aftermarket case?). I didn't see microSD mentioned yet, nor do I know if it has USB-C.
That's my minimum spec for a smartphone in 2016: Snapdragon 820; 2GB+ RAM; 1920x1080 or above screen (preferably just that, above is unnecessary); removable large battery of at least 3000mAh; USB-C; near-stock ROM and/or an unlockable bootloader. MicroSD would be nice.

if you want to defend touchwiz against stock, that will be hard (slow updates, insane ram management - just kill all the apps in the background no matter what). the only oem that has some good almost vanilla android would be sony, but there are updates are even slower than samsung's.

I used to lean towards this opinion but after three years with a Nexus 4, I have changed my mind. The lack of external storage isn't worth what the one Android update delivered (Material design, Android Run Time).

New versions of Android don't really accomplish much. Marshmallow delivers Doze, which is a more aggressively low-power idle state. That's arguably a lot more than Lollipop delivered.
IMO, the things that matter for me now are the best camera performance coupled with a good screen and all-day battery life. Nexus devices have never had any of these things although the 5X/6P now have good cameras (without OIS and with 2.0f aperture, so worse than competitors' year-old flagships at the same price point).

The snapdragon 810 was a miserable failure from the start, the 808 was actually decent when the software was optimized for it like in the Moto XPE, but when the software isn't optimized for it, like the LG Nexus 5X, then it barely performs better than a phone with an SD615, Exynos performed well, but not all Snapdragons were pieces of shit

S7 edge is quite tempting to replace my note 3 with.
Not really sure what to expect of the modular stuff with the g5, seems like any accessory these days could simply connect to your phone with bluetooth or some near field communication to do whatever it wants, the main advantage is replaceable batteries, useful when you expect a long day but not exactly a must have either with all sorts of external battery packs and shit.
