OpenGL is a pile of steaming shit, hence one major reason for shitastic performance. There is a reason why vulkan isn't trying to be backwards compatable with it.

It's true but consider that the games was not made with linux in mind in the first place, the important thing at the moment is that the first barrier is breaking: the games is available for linux and is perfectly playable. Now those who wants to use linux doesn't need to depend on a windows installation, which is something good at the end even for windows users because they get more options and competition will force microsoft to improve and to be nicer with their users.

I don't think is fault of the platform itself but to the current idiosyncrasies: game devs hardly knows or has used linux so they don't know how to optimize for it or for opengl. Then due to the low marketshare hardware vendors doesn't put the same effort on the linux drivers (AMD being the worst offender imo) and the same for the game developers, and due to the lower performance is harder for linux to compete on that field thus becoming a vicious circle (valve has helped a lot to break it).

The majority of the blame lies on the game devs building their games for non cross platform apis, and then that api simply being wrapped to OpenGL which won't produce good performance. Its possible in the future that we'll see better performance either from Vulkan native games, or from newer wrappers that convert DX11 into Vulkan.
However for the current crop of Feral's DX wrapper based ports Grid Autosport isn't as bad as some since it isn't Nvidia specific and performs well with the open source Radeon driver.

It's never going to be the year of the Linux desktop, because Linux only ever plays catch-up with Windows and OSX. Linux on the desktop just isn't as maintainable, optimized, or foolproof as Windows or OSX are on the desktop. Microsoft and Apple have funneled millions of hours and dollars into tweaking, optimizing, and developing their desktop paradigms. Linux can't hope to match and then exceed that amount of time, effort, and money. Developing a thousand spin-off "so easy your grandma can do it!" desktop suites and distros to try and get that mythical Year of the Linux Desktop is just a waste of time and effort.
Keep Linux where it belongs and where it's best: hobbyist's computers, microcomputers, and servers.

OpenGL isn't perfect, but that's not why vulcan is dropping compatibility.
OpenGL is a relatively high level abstraction, whcih people have been trying to game around to get extra performance.
If you just want to do something simple, and aren't performance limited, even the Vulcan people advise not to use it.
They will coexist.
Especially since Vulcan will be a hell of a lot harder to program for, it'll be faster once done, but a lot more limited amount of people will know it.
