Just made one last night out of preparation for wiping and reinstalling.

On a different note, how many /g/anoomen use some sort of redundant RAID setup, be it 5 or 1+0 or whatever.

Ask a guy who doesn't backup anything and recovered successfully from a RAID-0 failure anything.
>>
how long does it take to back everything up anyway? the only reason i don't do this shit is because backing up 1.2 TB of shit doesn't seem quick? seems like it would take 24 hours.

You say that like you have something better to do.
>>
>>53100084
Depends on your system. My primary disk (Windows) is sitting at about 1.1TB out of 2, and creating a disk image takes roughly 30 minutes or so (reading from a SSD RAID 0 array, writing to a standard 7200RPM platter). Granted, it doesn't really interfere with using the computer while its working, but I just set it to repeat every monday at 4AM or so.

Can't speak for *nix, but I can't imagine the process would be that much more painful.
>>
>>53100084
Just do a software RAID-1 to an eSATA drive you put on top of your PC, no annoying backup routines and in case of nVidya housefire grab and run.
>>
>>53099893
Thanks for the reminder but I got it under control.

I've done the same, but none of the data on it belonged to me.
What was the nature of the failure and how did you fix it?

I did the windows 7 backup yesterday. I let the program do its recommended files and it also made a system image. Then I backed up my library separately just to be safe. It's all on an external.

What exactly is a system image? every single on my computer right now?

The main idea is to have it in multiple places for redundancy.

Plus services like Box and Dropbox don't just trash people's data, it would be bad for business.
>>
>>53101197
The business is now in datamining, what can they datamine from GPG files
>>
we did it reddit
>>
>>53101229
Purely hypothetical and paranoid. The services are reliable until they aren't reliable anymore.
>>
>>53101325
>2016
>Corporations
>Innocent until proven guilty

Maybe. But only maybe, because the wide-spanning multi-corporate investment into cloud computing is way too disproportionate for the return.
>>
>>53101433
Listen kid.
Reliability is what they are selling, its their entire profit model, data mining is a subset of that, if people don't trust the service, they aren't going to use it. As a corporation that needs to be profitable they aren't going to harm their reputation by deleting gpg encrypted files just because they won't deduplicate.
You can piss in the wind all day with maybes and I'm still going to utilize these free services as backups because it works.
>>
>>53101601
Sorry, I wasn't the other poster you were going back and forth with about encrypted files going missing. That whole idea is silly, even if the users who encrypted their data that way *wasn't* already the underwhelming minority.

I was just raising the point that for the projected returns, the investment is suspicious. Maybe it's nothing, but historically, probably not.
>>
>>53101747
I'm sure they provide direct access to the FBI CIA homeland etc. People are fucking dumb and if they put unencrypted shit in the cloud they have no real expectation of privacy.
>>
>>53101828
Consider that GPG encryption won't last forever, and that when it becomes crackable if anyone has it, it can be seen plainly
This might be after you're dead, but you still are entitled to privacy even after dying

Many ciphers are theoretically impossible to decrypt using the encrypted files alone.

You are going off into lala land of maybes again. Maybe thugs break into your house and pull your fingernails screaming at you to decrypt your backup codes for your gmail account and super secret organizations with 5th dimension computers are focused on your list of game logins but thats a risk I am willing to take so I don't have to spend money on more disk drives.

What's a good program for making a mountable image backup over LAN? I'm investing in a RAIDed backup rig and want to do it right
>>
>>53102945
NFS and rsync
>>
>>53102945
RAID5, grab a few Western Digital drives and you're set.
>>
>>53103019
How quickly would 2.5" drives go out if I was using about 4 or 5 750 gig drives together in raid5? I'm planning to have an itx build with a 5.25" hotswap bay, and they may be always on but only accessed weekly.

>>53102997
What OS would make it easiest? I have access to windows server but it seems like I could just have arch running off of a flash drive or some shit.
>>
>>53103343
Pretty sure most versions of Windows support mounting NFS.

There might be something better to use than rsync for Windows, idk.
>>
>>53103493
I meant to run on the server
>>
>>53103510
Oh, like Windows as the server?
Yeah I have no idea.
CIFS and whatever built in Windows raid software, or something like greyhole maybe.

Its going to be way slower than NFS though.

There is no "cloud", it's still only other peoples (Corporations) harddrives that you have no control over.
