Why the hell is your kernel so old?
Darwin 15.4.0 Darwin Kernel Version 15.4.0: Sun Jan 31 20:16:34 PST 2016; root:xnu-3248.40.173.0.1~9/RELEASE_X86_64

It's RHEL/CentOS, meaning ancient software.
I'm personally using it because my server's internal storage is so tiny and new distros are too bloated to accommodate for it. And fuck, its supported until 2020 so why not?
>>53092322
Don't worry, the version is old but they do backports.

exactly.
rh backports whole features, so kernel version doesn't say anything.

Why use FreeBSD? Honest question.
As a longtime GNU/Linux user, I've never had any interest -- what am I missing?
>>53103472
Just a matter of taste for the most part, I have found that it is virtually impossible to break my FreeBSD system vs gentoo/Arch.
Jails are also nice, although I hear there are kernel modules for that now in Linux.
Most Linux binaries will run just fine on FreeBSD, really the only downside is hardware compatibility and the answer to that is; buy a system that is fully compatible.
As a matter of principle I prefer the BSD license as well, and gcc is deprecated.

Stable base system developed as a whole with no surprises or crazyness, everything 3rd party gets installed to /usr/local meaning if you want to wipe or re-purpose the server or machine you can just nuke it and re pull the tree, ports are kept rolling and up to date.
Base system updates nicely with rollbacks.
Overall: stability & simplicity.

Thanks for responding.
I doubt you care, but LLVM and a simple base system definitely appeal to me the most.
>Jails are also nice, although I hear there are kernel modules for that now in Linux.
And yeah, the Linux kernel has handy namespace support, which frontends like systemd-nspawn and docker can use to make containers. I haven't used jails, but I think they're similar.
>the only downside is hardware compatibility and the answer to that is; buy a system that is fully compatible.
To be fair though, I'm not sure that any operating system could beat the out-of-the-box hardware support of GNU/Linux. Looking at the graphics drivers in the kernel alone -- radeon, nouveau, amdgpu, i915 -- well, they're all pretty damn good for being completely free. Perfect? Hell no, but definitely usable.

The difference is that arch is hard to install and windows 10 is hard to not install
