Why do Linux users get so ass blasted whenever gaming comes up?
>>
because they were too retarded to figure out PCI passthrough
>>
Because they are mad that their OS is so irrelevant it doesn't even get fucking video games lmao
>>
>>53092118
~1000ish of the ~4000ish games on steam work on Linux. The market share of actual users is tiny though.
>>
>>53092118
ok kid
>>
>>53092082
Linux is not ready for games, and games are not ready for Linux. But at some point people will grow tired of Microsoft and SteamOS will become a valid gaming platform. Linux's OS market share will only grow from now on.
inb4 GNU\Linux-libre
>>
>>53092135

That ~1000 that have been ported run noticeably shittier than they do on Windows. That might have something to do with it too.
>>
>>53092082

They're like macfags. If their OS can't do it, anyone who wants to do it is somehow inferior.
>>
>>53092135
>tfw I keep hearing this
>tfw I open up Steam on Linux
>tfw only 10% of the games I have on my account show up
and they aren't even any of the games I actually play regularly

fuck, gaming is a good third of third of the reason I boot Windows primarily
the others are driver support (mostly higher performance, eg video, and wifi drops out less under Windows) and shit that doesn't work/runs badly in Wine

most of the shit I do in Windows, I could do on Linux (a large part in thanks to Wine, even used to regularly use Photoshop CS5 in Wine since it works just fine if you can skip the installer), a bunch of the programs I use day-to-day are FOSS ones that are mainly developed on Linux or have good Linux ports

there's a few non game programs I can't reasonably run in Wine, such as Renoise (and I'd run it in Wine for Windows VSTi support, since there's a perfectly fine native Linux version other than the fact I can't use my synths) since it has hilariously awful audio latency and occasional crashing, same with Famitracker

I'm in the same boat. Almost every program I use is open source or cross-platform. Lack of mainstream games (most of those linux-compat games are indie crud) and generally shitty UI keeps me on Windows.

What the hell does licensing have to do with my post? Is "under GPL" like a default answer for you neckbeards?

GPL is shit btw.

No it's not cheaper. Do you know how much it cost to license a 2000 node virtualized windows server cluster? Linux owns the server market for good reason. The only reason computers come stock with windows is because Microsoft head locks manufacturers in agreements to get "certified hardware". Linux owns the computing space with android, servers, and growing with chromebooks.

This is actually pretty easy with the tools that come with Windows. To manage that many Linux boxes you need expensive third party solutions like puppet.

>>
>>53092751

In some situations it's a better fit. If I was running a web hosting farm it would be Linux no argument there. If I need a file server for 1000 Windows workstations I'll pay $400 for a Windows license and be done with it. You do not want to deal with samba when it fucks up.
>>
>>53092082
Because over a decade ago now the PC gaming industry was faced with a choice. Sell out and give a console maker the power to restrict the PC, or go with the more difficult choice of attempting to build the PC into a gaming platform with no rival. They chose to throw in with the consoles and we've been dealing with the fallout of that ever since with users not able to access the full power of their hardware unless they happen to use one version of one OS.

Now we find ourselves at the same crossroads and if game companies make the wrong choice this time it could be the death of the PC as we know it. The alternative to giving a console maker the power to kill the PC is harder and more painful, but if we want PCs to survive in a recognizable form it needs to be done.

I miss the Bungie that made games other than Halo, and released them for Linux PCs rather than consoles.

Even with themes they always look "off". Like they didn't have a lead designer to nitpick certain details. The padding on elements will be inconsistent, or the size of an icon is disproportionate to the rest of the UI.

I'm actually gunna install Ubuntu in Hyper-V right now and compare Unity to others. My coworker is recommending Xfce. I've used it before, look OK, not amazing, but the UI proportions were rarely out of whack so I guess I can theme it.

nigger I'm talking about the shitass spacing between the icons, not the borders. Also I use 7 Taskbar Tweaker so the taskbar right clicks are the same as explorer. 1 program, 20 seconds of configuring does all the tweaking I want for Windows. Desktop/tray/explorer right clicks are consistent enough which are the ones I use.

Yeah later versions of Windows are a clusterfuck because there are remnants from Classic theme days and from Vista/7 but those are all the menus that I rarely use so I don't really care.

At this moment GPU manufacturers and gatekeepers of the low level libraries and drivers to make those GPUs do things are not interested in open collaboration and have lagged behind the rest of the computer tech industry in that regard. I don't think that is going to change very soon, but it is getting mildly better. Microsoft has no interest at this time in licensing DirectX to anyone for use on anything but their own operating systems and devices. It is a really good API. OpenGL is a bit long in the tooth, GLES with proprietary extensions is growing ever popular, particularly with the PS3/PS4, nintendo does their own totally proprietary thing. Will Vulkan fix it? Maybe a little but not really. Microsoft is changing a lot though, it wouldn't shock me to see an open sourced windows on the horizon that starts behaving a lot more unixy with each release.
>>
>>53097222

I know it was before you were born Anon, but in the late 90s / early 00s we had a first wave of games on Linux from companies like Id, Epic, and Bungie. When Microsoft released the Xbox they paid off all of those devs to drop Linux support and go console-first. That led directly to the dark age of PC gaming that we're only now coming out of.
