How do you like opensuse? i just checked out tumbleweed and it looks interesting. Do you recommend it? Why do you like it? What's the package manager like?

Debian 8 with MATE. The default Debian look (Gnome?) was terrible and hard to navigate so I switched to MATE which is much easier to use. I will admit that I actually reinstalled Debian because I couldn't figure out how to uninstall gnome and install MATE without breaking everything.

I have Windows 7 on another partition but I barely touch it these days. I miss a few games and a few applications, but I'm gradually getting much more used to it.

It's pretty nice, it's been justwerks mode since I installed. I used Ubuntu before and although I do like Unity, I like the features of GNOME3 a little better, hence my setup.

I chose Tumbleweed to get the latest GNOME3 DE/apps and an up to date kernel without having to configure an Arch install. It's a really good distro if you want the latest KDE5 as well.

If you want to try opensuse on a live usb, go here:
https://geckolinux.github.io/

The zypper package manager seems alright to me, no real complaints. And YaST can be useful as well, I quite like the 1-click install feature: You can browse software.opensuse.org for software, then click an install button from there and it opens YaST with the correct URLs/repos plugged in. Makes certain things easier to install than even Ubuntu.

So what's the difference between Debian or Mint or Ubuntu other than how the file browser works?

Can I technically just pick up Ubunutu and if I don't like it, can I just modify it to look and work exactly like Mint?

Is there a key difference other than basic programs installed?

>So what's the difference between Debian or Mint or Ubuntu other than how the file browser works?
The default installed packages, the packages in the repo, the versions of the packages in the repo, ubuntu also uses some patched libraries to make them work with unity.

>Can I technically just pick up Ubunutu and if I don't like it, can I just modify it to look and work exactly like Mint?
Pretty much, yes
>>

What's so good about Void linux? I've heard about it recently
>>
>>53085483
It's a bit like arch, however it has a musl version. Instead of openssl it uses libressl. Packages are automatically recompiled by some bot, you can see if it fails and all, pretty cool.

It doesn't depend on systemd, instead it uses runit with simple shell scripts.
>>
>>53085157

At least throw an HD3450 in it so you can have accelerated h264 playback.
>>
>>53085483
It's another meme for people who'd like to spend more of their time on earth configuring their system instead of doing any productive work on it.

Just stick with Debian or Mint like a productive member of society.

Opensuse is good. I've used it in the past. In general, I use the community distro for whatever my clients use in their datacenter. Back then, my client was using Suse Enterprise for an SAP rollout. I was using OpenSUSE 11.3 in a VM supporting their efforts. Suse was... "comfy".

Arch
>>
>>53084704
Arch with i3, it's been absolutely great so far.
>>
>>53085763
But what benefit is there other than Debian or Mint? Give me one solid reason.

Debian and Mint are much more stable distros with easy installers that can be fine tuned if you've got more experience, if you're running on anything more powerful than a first gen i3 you're not going to notice a shred of difference between Debian and Arch.

Why make the program yourself when you can install it automatically in the terminal with absolutely no difference in performance.
>>
>>53085882
It's rolling release, the packages are more up to date, it uses libressl, you can use it with musl. It's much much easier to contribute a port/package.

>Why make the program yourself when you can install it automatically in the terminal with absolutely no difference in performance.
Void has a fucking installer for the 3th time your retard.
>>
>>53085882

This.

I like learning linux, but why should I have to learn shit that should just fucking work anyway. Stuff that is working at first, then breaks. That's counter productive.
>>
>>53085922
When you install something like arch or gentoo, you know what these "magic installers" actually do under the hood, you will know what library does what, what package does what, how to compile a kernel, learn a few new commands. Oh and it's fun.

People like you who I'm sure are "really into technology" won't understand though.

No, I understand, it's just I'd like to learn when I want to learn, not when I HAVE to learn because I'm about to sit down with the OH and plex fucks up.

That said, I do get where you're coming from, shit just seems to break at the most inconvenient time for me.

Also, any open source alternative to plex that do transcoding?
>>
>>53086030
apparently plex is gonna use (or already uses?) mpv, which is free software.

I don't exactly know what you mean by trans-coding, but have you tried ffmpeg?
>>
>>53085643
You just have to make a partition for the uefi in your table. I'm reasonably sure ubuntu does this for you and the arch wiki explains step-by-step how to do this yourself
>>
>>53086132

I got my wording wrong, I suppose I just meant a DLNA server in general that can transcode. So my receiver can't for example play .mkv, so plex uses a profile which will convert and stream that format to a compatible one on the fly using the PC's CPU, to a compatible format depending on the receiver/device.

I've not tried ffmpeg, I was pretty much a win-babby with minimal Linux experience until a couple of weeks ago and have gone through 3 distros since

Linux Mint with Cinnamon
Installed i3 recently though to try out, really like it so far. Started out with gnome 3 but quickly switched because it felt like it was designed for a touch screen.

Same here, I went from Ubuntu to Fedora, straight back to Ubuntu, wanted more so I'm now on Debian. Seemed like a good halfway between the two.

Next step (unless someone convinces me otherwise) is Manjaro>Arch, in due time
