Don't forget:
>x86 becoming popular on mobile devices because of goldmont atoms

http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/compare/5046870?baseline=4892982

Look at the integer and integer multi-core. At around the same frequency x86 silvermont cores almost match powerful ARM krait 400 cores.

pic related comes with 4GB of RAM, Z3580x86 atom processor (up to 2.3GHz), and 1080p screen.

Yeah aplel ARM cores and better than ARM krait 400 cores will probably still beat x86 goldmont cores but devices with goldmont atoms will provide better value for customers like you see in pic related.

>>
>>52985373
I still don't get why you would want a CISC architecture like x86 on mobile devices? The power consumption will probably never be as good for the performance, and what else is there to gain?
>>
>>52985415
x86 software support. Currently you have to run a VM on the zenfone 2 to run things like windows 7 but we could see manufactures creating phones that dual boot android and windows 8.1/10 and include precision stylus input like the one on the Note 4 to use as a miniature mouse. I think a great deal of people would be interested in something like this.

Fucking seriously? I didn't think it'd be that easy. That's pretty neat.
Still, that's thinking awfully far ahead but if that ever works out it'd be nice.
>>
I want a Kaby Lake Core M Surface phone and an Goldmont Lumia.
>>
>>52985415
Aren't modern x86 implementations basically RISC with a lot of microcode to translate the more complex operations to simpler ones anyway?
>>
>>52985415
Also, Intel's GPUs are actually pretty good, and their general software/Linux driver support is way better than the competition.

ARM being "RISC" totally saves it from any power problems, just see the Snapdragon 810 :^)
>>
>>52985574
Yes and unsurprisingly modern ARM chips are that way too. Complex instructions like AESD are decoded into multiple micro-ops.
>>
>>52985525
The surface phone might run a desktop x86 operating system. I imagine they would also include stylus input like that on the surface pro 4.
>>
>>52985574
Kind of, they are microcoded into uops, see Agner's guide for details. Modern ARM implementations are also microcoded in the same way, though. And it's not a bad thing - complex variable length instructions allow more code to fit in your instruction cache.

Nvidia's Denver has an actual JIT that converts ARM into an internal instruction set, and it's terrible.

No idea, I'm no hardware expert. I don't see how that'd save on power though, since the microcode still has to be executed to do the same thing.

>>52985589
>just see the Snapdragon 810
That didn't really have power issues though, did it? Just a stupidly large thermal draw.
>>
>>52985616
Why has arm been a piece of shit? While x86 processors are becoming popular on tablets and soon phones, why is arm fading out of existence? I thought it was teh 1337 cpu architecture.
>>
>>52985659
I dunno, the ARM ISA is capable a lot, see the Apple A9 benchmarks. But the Cortex-A57 and Qualcomm designs just seem a generation too late.
>>
>>52985659
no software support. nobody gives a shit about a cpu architecture with only enough juice to run angry birds. Maybe if qualcum and samshit had stopped jerking each other off all day long, they could have made a desktop arm processor a long time ago.
>>
>>52985574
yes and no. instructions are translated in risc like signals but everything else is pretty much more complex than an arm for example. thats why you dont see a fucking i7 in cellphones.

So I have a 7850, 2GB factory OC, is it worth upgrading to a factory OC 960 or bottom level 970 at the moment? New Nvidia cards fucking when? I want a price drop so I can afford a fucking 980.
>>
>>52986109
like none of that

>bottom level 970
holy shit fuck you, god no

Get a decent 390 or just wait for better options from both sides right now
>>
>>52986142
Right? My options are fuckall. The original plan when I built this rig since I was on a budget was to wait 2-3 years and swap the card out, but 3 years down the track all of the mid-high range cards were taken off the shelves in my country and I was left with nothing to choose from but underpowered 960s, the broken 970, and overpriced 980s. Honestly not keen to keep with Radeon after all the issues I've had there.
>>
>GPUs finally getting off the 28nm ride

Did they make some breakthrough? Are we gonna see a huge improvement soon?
Thinking about upgrading when the next generation comes out
>>
>>52986189
afaik polaris is ready and pascal is gonna be taped out soon in the new 14/16nm process. Polaris should launch this summer and have up to double the perf/watt of old gen.
>>
>>52986109
If your card is fine, then there' no need to upgrade. It also depends on your OS plus the amount of monitors you have and their refresh rates. I wouldn't get Hawaii this late in the game since multi monitor consumption is shit, but I'd also be wary of Nvidia being shit at handling high refresh monitors. Buying high end right now is very stupid when we're getting 14nm-16nm this year. Get a 380 and splerg it all later on a high end Polaris/Pascal card, go the middle route by getting a 390 or 970, or be a complete moron and buy high end Fiji or a 980Ti.
>>
>>52986225
I don't think it is fine though, like just as I was researching cards before it went all static. I'm also wanting to change the case for reasons, but I can't validate all the effort to change case if I'm not going to upgrade any other parts.

It was cheap, it works, it's fast as fuck.

It eats a bit more than a GTX980, but who the F cares, honestly?
And also it's got "only" 3gigs of ram... but my 7870 had 2gigs, and I maxed out all titles, and never ran out of vram... so yeah.

*just buy a used card which still got warranty.
most 780s got a warranty until the end of the year or next year, which are both good enough.

the simple GTX780 is also much more powerful than the 7850.
