Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I mean I bought one for my cheapo x201.
The battery lost like 5% capacity in 2 weeks. I want to know that if such a behaviour is normal.

 upower -i /org/freedesktop/UPower/devices/battery_BAT0
gives me info on the vendor and model and so on, how to know if the cells are "quality" cells?

Hey fellow /g/entoomen. Leap here. Got a thinkpad 600x id like to get ethernet or wireless to in linux. Putting debian on there so I can do some testing with perf for a class I am taking. Thinking of doing cpu power used vs cpu computing power for computers over the years using an example computer from every 5 years or so starting with this one. I need an ethernet or wifi (pref both) cardbus/pcmcia card that have no issues with linux driver wise. Any suggestions?

I can also upload more pictures if requested. Just reply to this comment =]

it's gonna run Windows Server 2012R2.
The CPU is faster than my current AMD G-t56n.

People really don't understand. Yes, the t420 and the x220 were great machines; however, it is time to move on. Thinkpads last a long time, but purchasing ones that are five years old and expecting to use them for another 3 years or so is ridiculous.

People know this even if the don't admit so, as they are in denial because they are too attached to trendy old ones because of the keyboard and shiny lights

>>52992302

You need a RPI or BB. There is documentation for the RPI online. You can get the old RPI if you want to save some money. You can also get Rev A or B for the BB, the instructions work just the same. I personally use the Rev B Beaglebone as I found a cheap one online for 30 dollars.

That's the bottom for functional computers that can still surf the modern web. The same way any functional, running car is worth $500.

Sure, you'll still see people giving shit away, taking it to the junkyard, or donating it, but on the open market that's what you can expect for it, whether it was made in 1962 or 1992. It won't be worth any less until something major happens in technology.

>>52997160

>>
>>52997204

It's economics really. These guys get paid to dispose of old computers by companies and they turn around and sell them on eBay. 30-50 dollars is the cheapest you will find any computer online because it is enough to cover their labor for testing and cleaning the laptop.
Eventually, what you will find is that demand will fall for the x60, nobody will want to buy them for 50 dollars anymore, so the recyclers will trash them instead of going through the effort of reselling them. Then the price will skyrocket once the supply is low.

>>52997285

Which PSU do you use? Typically with the PSU, it will either work or it won't, unless you are talking about the BB's PSU, but most people just use a USB plugged into their computer for that.

The best advice I can give you for the connection is to open the clip all the way, slide it over the chip and then release it.
>>
>>52997204
Because it's tiny.
>>
>>52997342

Which distro are you using?

Go into your BIOS and disable the trackpad. Forcing yourself to use the trackpoint is the best way to get used to it. After a day or two it will be second nature.
>>
>>52997349

Why didn't you use it? I wanted to get the M4-1, which has the older 1.0 trackpoint in it, but I couldn't find one for a reasonable price, it doesn't have the middle button, and it's mechanical.

The x200 definitely needs an external PSU. The guide you are using is probably for the x60.

You need to use this: http://www.amazon.com/Breadboard-Supply-Arduino-Solderless-Adpator/dp/B01BOEZ1OA/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1455571919&sr=8-2&keywords=3.3v+psu+breadboard

Use a 5v barrel plug to supply power to it and run your wires from the 3.3v pin to the appropriate pin on the clip. The ground can either be run from the RPI2 or the power supply.

That is your problem. The chip isn't get a consistent power supply. I'm surprised though, if you try to do this on the BB rev B, the BB will shutdown.

The 3.3v and 5v pins really aren't good to use while you're using the RPI, they're really meant to be used as a standalone PSU. When you use them, you choke the RPI.

In any case, you're looking at 10-20 dollars for a dedicated PSU and a barrell plug (if you don't have one laying around).
