2GB with vanilla Android feels and acts bigger than 4GB with Samsung's bloat, from what I've experienced and seen in videos respectively.

Sometimes things have to reload if they have been in the background for a long time, but it generally doesn't happen unless you're using tons of apps and hasn't been an issue for me.

hmm the only phone that comes to mind is the Xperia series, I think the Z5/Z5C are good phones but they are kind of disappointing if you hype them up too much. Z5 Premium screen is just a meme though, I wouldn't pay extra for it when it runs at 1080p 95% of the time.

I've heard mixed things. DXOMark says the camera is best of the best, some reviews say it leaves something to be desired. Also some anons complain the fingerprint scanner isn't that great, and it was removed for the US release. I'd still try and get one with the scanner though, since it is hella convenient.

>>52976494
Can't really think of anything with square corners except for the Z5. Most everything has round corners. Also I don't know if the screen is matte, but the back glass is for sure.

Hey, I need help !
Got a LG G2 but it's kinda getting old, battery only lasts 1 day, it's getting slow and my mic doesn't even work properly anymore, people can't hear me during calls (dropped it too many times I guess).

Need some help to find something new, and with a really good autonomy. Really like that "tap to unlock" feature on my G2, other phones doing it too?
Price's not an issue, so you can recommend me almost anything.
>>
>>52976522
I meant to imply it is not mate, but thanks for the info regardless. While we're at it, how's the dev support (it's not supported by CM yet, is it?)? Also, does it overheat?
>>
>>52976574
Z series devices generally have OK dev support. However, when you unlock the bootloader on the Z3, it deletes some DRM keys. Some of these are just useless so you can access Sony's media store, but some of them actually enable special low light processing for pictures taken. Unlocking the bootloader without backing up these keys results in much worse low light performance. I'm not sure if the same situation persists with the Z5. Sony's skin is generally OK though, much better than Samsung's or even LG's. Has some useful additions like Stamina mode which is like Doze but works when the device is moving.
>>
>>52973768
Nexus 6p will still be an amazing phone in a year from now, and I'm sure the price will be much lower then too

Well you have a portable computer in your pocket which is always connected to the internet. It's like night and day compared to using a dumbphone.

You can either buy the phone outright or get it on contract from your carrier, usually buying it outright is better since you can switch carriers on a whim instead of being tied down to a specific carrier for the length of the contract. Sometimes it makes sense financially to get it on contract though, since sometimes the subsidy offered is more than you would save by bringing your own device.

Some things to consider when purchasing a phone is whether you can unlock the bootloader (allows you to install custom software) and whether or not the phone has good dev support (so custom software exists). Nexus devices are easily unlockable and rootable (allows full access over the device, like sudo in Linux) and have amazing dev support so I personally recommend them.

I remember going from a Blackberry 8530 to a Nexus 5 and it being one of the most significant upgrades I have ever experienced.
>>
>>52976932
It does not have to be always connected and with the prices and limitations of data in most of the world, it rarely is.
>>
>>52976885

something like this?

or

acquire phone (maybe at brick store, maybe online) -> buy sim from a service provider -> register online, with a payment card and photo ID and choose subscription here

on my OPT, tags on music is displayed funnily and inconsistently. It capitalizes the first few letters even though they aren't capitalized in the tags. I've copied the music back to my computer to check tags, and they're all fine, so the phone hasn't actually messed up the tags, but it's just displaying them wrong. This happens with other music players too, so it's not just a Google Play bug. The files are flac, btw, I haven't tested with mp3s

I just brought my phone I bought into a carrier store, they gave me a free sim card since i think the guy got a bonus for signing me up.

Make sure the phone you get supports the proper bands for your carrier. Band 3 is a must with any provider in Australia, and you could probably get away with only having that band. Band 28 and 7 are used by Optus and Telstra, with the former being useful for getting LTE inside big buildings. Band 5 is used by Vodafone.

A Nexus phone would support all the bands you need, you'd have to get the global model of the 5X for every band you need with every provider. I also think Nexus would be good for you since it works great out of the box and you don't have to tinker with it if you don't want to (although there is a lot of stuff you can tinker with).

I'd also consider the OnePlus X, although it is missing band 28. Some chinese phones support band 3 and 7 (but not generally 28) like the Xiaomi Mi4C, which I would consider if I lived in Australia. Again missing band 28 would just mean that with Optus and Telstra you might have some issues getting LTE inside big buildings, but it will generally be fine.

>they gave me a free sim card since i think the guy got a bonus for signing me up.

>>
>>52978158
You take the risk of getting a phone that doesn't work or is damaged, or it could be stolen and locked (see the daily "how 2 unlock muh stolen iPhone" threads). Also, if it is stolen it might be blacklisted by carriers so it would just be an expensive iPod Touch with no working cellular radio.

Generally it is pretty safe as long as you get it from a reputable seller. Beware of deals that are too good to be true, because they usually are.

>>
>>52979649
Nexus 6p is the obviously choice if you want stock Android again.
>>
>>52979551
Some fuzziness, but that doesn't call for a bad camera. Besides the focuspoint on the label is sharp. So, the sensor being not that great, sure. But the "bad camera" is just kind of silly and probably has a lot to do with lighting and people using custom roms, the Cyanogen camera app for instance is a real piece of shit.

I know the camera on a Nexus 5 doesn't take stunning images, like a phone with a more pricey camera, like the lumias have. But for a mobile phone, it isn't bad.

Bad is LG G3S, that cannot take ANY picture without it coming out grainy as fuck on whatever device you're using.

LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 12(700), 17(700), 18(800), 19(800), 20(800), 25(1900), 26(850), 28(700), 40(2300) - L09; rare as fuck version not for sale anywhere.

prepaid service.

A basic plan that will cover your talk time + text
$20
+ 500mb data
$15

~35/month total.

You could get some data only plan from bell for $20/month for 1GB, but you will need to find a workaround to get texts/voice to work through apps/VOIP

OK.

Why buy a smartphone then?
>>
So guys, I fell for the Windows Phone meme about a year and a half ago, and I'm planning to move off the OS next upgrade. Unfortunately the reason is mostly down to Snapchat, it's apparently very important for university life, as I've found out the hard way whilst I've had this appless phone.

Is iOS a meme? Android is already out of the the picture because I don't like Google taking my shit. And yes, I know Microsoft do it as well, but they aren't making a business out of it.

And sorry if I've posted wrong here, I'm a newfriend here, please be patient with me.
>>
>>52989832
>Fucking dropped.
If you can't even elaborate, then your opinion does not count for shit

>Why buy a smartphone then?
For internet, texting (whatsapp / telegram), as an organiser. You know.....grown-up stuff.
You'll get there once your 25+. If you already are older than 25 and still play games on your smartphone, you are probably functionally retarded
>>
>>52989902
For texting a 90$ Moto E is more than enough and it can easily last up to 2 days at least for me
>>
>>52989902
MediaTek's CPUs are pretty bad. They don't have a good dev support (Snapdragons are better here) and they don't have decent [performance by current standards. MTK6753 has 8 A53 cores. Even, worse, they are all clocked at default 1.5GHz, which makes it even worse than Kirin 935.
Both of those CPUs are slower than the Snapdragon 801, even though it's has "only" 4 ARM7A cores.
>whatsapp
>grown up stuff
You can do such things on a dumb phone, which will last on battery even more.
>>
>>52987867
I'm doing the same after knocking my Droid Ultra (fucking worst phone) into the sink last night. From what I've read 16 GB is fine if all you're going to use it for is light apps, browsing, email, text. The plan I mentioned is from Petro Canada wireless prepaid which is on the Rogers network
>>
>>52993997
I had a look at the prepaid plans on those networks and got only this:
Virgin $45 for 500min/500mb
Fido $45 300min / 400mb

The Bring-Your-Own-Phone month to month plans are even better than their prepaid (i.e. Fido has $45 for 500min/500mb)

But thanks for telling me that Petro plan.
Do you know if there have been any gripes with that? Or since it's Rogers, the quality of service is decent?

G4

5X

Quick question about microsexual performance:

Do they just suck? Do most phones not make use of UHS? No matter what microsexual I use I don't think over seen faster than ~18-20mb/s sequential writes and ~30mb/s reads. Most of the Samsung ones I use claim ~80.

I'd prefer the OPO because it has NFC, AC wifi, 64GB and other stuff that the OPX doesn't have but i wouldn't even use. The OPX looks cool but at the same time it doesn't have backlit keys, has 2525mAh battery and Oxygen OS which isn't comparable to Cyanogen. Advices?

Moto G is probably the best mid-range device you can get in such a price range. However the 2GB ram version costs $220 new, so you might want to either get a little more money or purchase one used.
>>
>>53002364
I'm on a Moto E 2015, so going to the G wouldn't be that much of an upgrade. If it's used it would have to be mint. Nexus 5 is actually a good idea if I can get one with a good battery, but i've seen the 6 down to $200... dunno if that will happen again soon.

I think it would. Moto E is pretty terrible spec, screen wise. Nexus 5 are going for pretty damn cheap refurbished on eBay and if $200 is your firm price then that's probably your best bet. That or the OPO. That's going pretty low these days as well.

Is it worth getting a One Plus X if I live in the US and use T Mobile?
>>
>>53011644
T-Mobile has been pushing Band 12 pretty heavily, and this is lower frequency (700mHz) so you will get better coverage especially inside buildings. OPX doesn't support band 12, but does support Band 4 which is also used by T-Mobile.

If you're in the suburbs it might not be too bad, but if you're in a city and go into large buildings often you'll probably feel the difference. This will only become more prominent in the upcoming years as T-Mobile deploys more Band 12 towers.

Well, I'm in one of the largest cities but definitely a burb dweller. All I really do on my phone is texting, shitposting, and streaming music from play music or youtube, if my city jumps ship to band 12 do you think HSPA/HSPA+ will support those online habits fine? And a question that I should really be asking T-Mobile is if after band 12 goes up will bands 2,4, and 5 still be useable?

>mfw bought a $569 Nexus 5X and don't use much data
>>
>could have bought a used 64GB iPhone 5S for $200 from a friend
>thought of resell value and iOS support down the road
>instead bought a new 32GB Nexus 5X for $500

Did I fuck up /spg/?

Yes. Not because ios is better, but because the 5X is shit.

literally out of idea what to buy

How useful are the following features:
* IR blaster
* screen res higher than HD
* removable battery
Also is 720p on a sub-5" phone OK?
>>

Go with the normie choice

64GB gray iPhone 6S

>How useful are the following features:

I haven't had a phone with that, but it seems useful to control your TV or some shit

Or to control the TV in a bar
>* screen res higher than HD
on >5" screen FHD is nice
>* removable battery
Also pretty nice, you can just swap it out and be back at 100%

>Also is 720p on a sub-5" phone OK?
yes

>>53013127
how is iOS better?
>>
>>53013394
a) Dem updates

b) Dat length of time of updates

>yfw the Nexus 4 didn't get 6.0
>>
>>53013409
As the iPhone 4 users how they enjoy their updates

Don't like iOS 8 because it makes your phone slow?

tough shit m8, no downgrades for you

The only two non-sammy phones I found with rem. battery are G4 and V10. G4 is a gamble (you get a factory broken phone or not) and LG didn't recall the faulty ones. And V10 is to expensive for me. Should I kill myself?

>>53013452
>you get a factory broken phone or not
Out of the loop here, what's going on with the G4?
>>
>>53013127
Wrong. My 5X is great.

>>53013008
I don't think you fucked up. 5X should be good for 2+ years, while the 5S will probably be slow as shit on iOS 11 in 2017, since Apple plans obsolescence while Android is getting more efficient with every iteration.

>>53012698
>>53012712
I got 7 hours screen on time over a period of over 24 hours yesterday and the day before on my 5X. If you're getting bad battery life its probably your usage profile and not the phone.

You should still be able to get LTE on band 4 for the foreseeable future, but it may drop down to HSPA in large buildings, which is still fast enough for streaming (faster than many home internet connections). I'd say go for it, if it becomes an issue you could always flip the phone on Swappa or Craigslist. Also OPX is pretty cheap, so even if it turns out to be shit or breaks you're not out a huge amount.

>>53012149
HSPA is okay (see above) but not ideal. If you have LTE stuff downloads faster leaving the radio idle more saving you battery. It should work since it supports 850mHz for HSPA.

Nexus 4 has unofficial updates to 6.0.1.

The thing is, they are less buggy than your average android counterpart.

Take for instance the galaxy s3 and the iPhone 5.

The S3 is a laggy piece of shit with touchwizz @ 4.4.2 and unstable on the latest CM nightly.

Sure you can flash a couple of different of pajeet roms and hope that it doesn't have bugs or weird shit, but an iPhone just werks.

Besides, a 5S is still quite fast and it's 3 years old and better than a galaxy S4.
