>literally every card has a useless DVI port
Do people really need it still?
>>
>>52958942
Both of my monitors use DVI. They're both from 2015, and they only have DVI and Displayport, and I'm not using that Apple shit
>>
>>52958942
>>>/v/
>>
Well dual link DVI-I still supports up to 2k resolution, which is more than enough for a lot of current systems, so I imagine it's not completely useless.
>>
I need it for my Korean monitor.
>>
>>52958942
What? DVI can transmit sound, so it't like HDMI, but older and more compatible with displays.

Why must some asshole like you have to come on and ask the same stupid ass question in a different way everyday. OldTech-A can't be replaced by NewTech-B over night, it takes years phase out. Along with 1,2,3 USB ports for C and all other shit. They stop making DVI then a shit load of monitors will get garbaged. And when a company like Apples does do they(Replace a Technology over night) everyone gets mad.
>>
>>52958942

>>
>>52958942
>Do people really need it still?

Nope.

Displayport to DVI cable is all they need.

But people are retarded and think both ends of a cable must be identical.
>>
>>52958942
My monitor uses DVI
>>
>>52959154
Yes it can. Some cards support sound over DVI, hover it believe it was made on cards more specific to video editing. Short answer. Yes DVI supports sound, no one really does it.
>>
>>52959236
Enjoy buying a $100 adapter for dual link
>>
my korean IPS panels say yes, it is still needed.
>>
>>52959082
>DVI can transmit sound

Only unofficially.
It's a hack and lacking a standard there are some compatibility issues.

Both HDMI and Displayport do officially support sound.
They are superior in every way.
>>
>>52959154
You can send audio over DVI the same way as HDMI (because they're pretty much the same thing). Only difference is there is no equipment designed to receive audio over DVI. So the only use is when you're using DVI to HDMI adapter/cable.
>>
I use both my DVI ports. the I for my professional 19" CRT since is the only that still have analogic out, and the other for my 1440p dell display. even tough my dell has DP, I couldn't bother spending 10 USD since the display already came with a DVI card.

Your thread is stupid, faggot.
>>
>>52959118
You mean speakers? My nephew has one he carries around with his console, it's pretty practical.

If you mean p2 connections I myself use a p2-rca connection between my monitor (p2) and my stereo receiver (rca) and this is how I get sound from both my pc and ps4.
>>
>>52959277
>$100 adapter

That's exactly what I meant by "retards".

Why the fuck do you think it would cost $100?
WHY?
Do you think you need gold plated Monster cables or something?
Do the bits need to be polished?

Any $10 Displayport to dual link DVI cable will work fine.
Stop inventing problems when there aren't any.
>>
>>52959270
>>52959082
Plain DVI does not transmit sound
>>
>>52959270
Older cards like GTX 285 had spdif input for audio pass through over DVI. There was no HDMI on graphics cards back then. I had it connected to my AVR that way.
>>
>>52959286
It's in the official specs. My 4850 did audio over dvi.

Rip bro you were still capable but amd abandoned you.

>Who uses sound in your monitor, its literally useless having sound coming from your monitor

I do.

The DAC in my screen has far less interference than the DAC in my PC.

Also, with audio handled by the "video" card when I want to watch a downloaded movie on my TV in the next room, the sound also moves to the correct room automatically.
>>
>>52959398
>you need an active powered adapter for dual link

No you don't.

What do you mean by this? I don't understand.
>>
>>52958942
>hdmi
>>
>>52959400
The port and cable have no problems transferring sound. Whether it is connected to any sound source internally is another matter. Older cards had to pass through because they had no built-in sound chips.
>>
Because I like having 144hz monitors. HDMI is the shit that needs to go already.
>>
I bought a Samsung monitor like 2 years ago and it only has VGA and DVI
>>
I prefer DVI since the connectors screw in and are less prone to accidentally. Also less stress on the connector itself due to the screws. I regularly move my monitor on my desk and rotate it to portrait mode and Displayport gave me problems.
>>
>>52959453

>>
>>52959379
I had a GTX 285 and it had that, it was a little connector on the side of the Gpu to which you would connect a cable for sound. But it had an HDMI too.
>>
I wish my graphics card had 2 display ports ;_;
I'm using one vga and one dvi because HDMI is shit.
>>
>>52958942
It wouldn't be so bad if they had it as a header on the board and used a riser cable to the DVI jack.
>>
>>52958942
I use it because display scaling is better on DVI (than HDMI, I'm a poorfag without DP). I don't have to use GPU scaling to fit the image on my screen properly.
>>
>>52959685
Try putting the GPU in the second PCIe x16 slot.
I've seen this problem on the 970 chipset.
>>
>>52958942
The better question is do we need the useless HDMI port that is locked down by big name TV manufacturers that can't come up with a half decent protocol if their life depended on it since they are too busy trying to stop piracy instead.

At this point every good monitor comes with a DVI and DP or DP at the least. There's no reason to need a shitty HDMI, especially as we go into the age of 4k and HDMI once again lacks behind DP 1.3 by miles.

The only time you honestly need a HDMI is if you're poor and bought a TV as a monitor, and you can easily get a HDMI to DP convert for that.
>>
>implying there aren't people still using VGA monitors

My 2005 16'' eMachines CRT still works just fine, thank you.
>>
Dvi can be turn easily converted to VGA and dvi without an active adapter like that you just need a dvi and a display port and you are cover for everything.
>>
I rely on dvi and hdmi, none of my displays even have display port
>>
>>52958942
Still using VGA ;-;
>>
using vga, dvi to vga, display port to vga and some good old dvi
>>
Am I insane or does HDMI look like ass on computers? I swear to god every GPU/screen combo I've seen or tried looks like a shittily compressed jpeg. Then I use a VGA cable and everything is crisp as fuck
>>
>>52959486
no, DVI does not transmit sound. DVI-I does, but not normal DVI
>>
Well i've got a Korean monitor in the mail, so I sure as fuck still need one.
>>
>>52960632
HDMI is digital, the signal is transmitted to the monitor losslessly. It cannot look like shit if your settings are correct on both the PC and the monitor.

The most common culprits could be incorrect black level settings and potentially over/underscan.
>>
>>52959236
Adapters can cause all kinds of issues with refresh rates when gaming.
>>
>>52960632
HDMI was designed to transfer 4:2:2 YCbCr 16-235 subsampled picture (i.e vastly inferior to what computers normally send). Sometimes due to buggy drivers some shitty monitor may be detected as TV, and that's what you'll get.

Normally there should be no difference, though.

I have a GTX 770 and two monitors, one 28" Samsung UHD using DisplayPort (kinda need to since HDMI doesn't like UHD @ 60 Hz) and a 23" HP using DVI-I. I've used HDMI on the HP, and it just doesn't look nice. I can't quite explain it, but the color saturation and sharpness seem off.

I see no problem with DVI.

This. A good monitor will outlast any other hardware easily. I'm still using a s-pva monitor from 2007 and I find it superior to current IPS crap with their 1000:1 contrast ratios. QA was much better in those days, too. There simply isn't any reason to replace it.

No you don't. Unless you intend on doing an Eyefinity(TM) setup you don't. The only time you need an active dongle is when you have more than two monitors.

I have a triple monitor setup, and I use CAD software/game in Eyefinity(TM) and I paid all of $18 retail (Amazon) for my "HDMI to DP active adapter". That being said idk where your country of residence is, so check your web listings of choice.
>>
Professional monitors are only DP or DVI. Also DVI is electrically compatible w/ HDMI.

>To output 1080p at 120Hz or 144Hz, you need a dual link DVI-D or DisplayPort cable and connect those to your monitor and computer. These standards include support for higher resolutions and refresh rates. HDMI 1.3 or higher can also be used to output 1080p content at 144Hz.

I hope the next generation of cards just comes with three DP1.4 ports on them, and reduce in size to 1.5 to 2 expansion slot width (with removal of VGA). Current cards are often 2.2 in size, and it really fucks with how many PCIe slots on a motherboard you actually use.

the DVI is more power

HDMI has more sound features bigger resolution its also in more things

Display port kinda rare still, but its inside all the expenise monitors : has sounds, internet.

not sure why anyone wants internet in their monitors?
