>Comcast, AT&T, and some other smaller internet providers either test data caps or have them in active use, and this week CenturyLink — home to just over 6 million broadband providers — said that it's looking into using data caps, too. "Our competition is using metered plans today," said Stewart Ewing, CenturyLink's chief financial officer, during an earnings call this week. "And we think it's an area we have to explore and consider." Ewing added that CenturyLink intends to start trials, likely later this year.

Why do ISPs push for data caps? Why do they even need it?
>>
They Can't keep on getting away with this!

Its a scam so they can get around net neutrality laws.
>put cap on internet
>offer package of services that doesn't count towards cap
This is the shit t-mobile does with "binge on".
>>
I feel sorry for people stuck in areas pursuing data caps with no alternatives. I live in an area that has like 6 options for internet/cable so they knownif the pull any shit, everyone will bounce.

Trust me, your ISPs are going to look at out ISPs and see how effective it is to squeeze money out of their costumers. They will soon follow.
>>
>>52953082
We got verizon fios, optimum online, comcast(shit), a couple private companies, and even satellite internet if we want. Even satellite internet is offering 5mb/s for $30 a month. If this shit becomes mainstream, the big companies need a kick in the dick, or be boycotted. Some type of civil suit against them. Its not like theyre running out of internet or having bandwidth over saturation. They're doing data caps literally to squeeze existing customers for money.
>>
>>52953004
>Why do ISPs push for data caps? Why do they even need it?
They do it because they like money. Either from being able to charge you more, or not having to provision for as much total bandwidth/transfer per connection they sell. It's 100% a "because we can get away with it" thing, assisted by the absolutely miserable state of ISP competition in the US - most places have either a monopoly provider of wireline broadband, or two companies that have an unspoken gentlemen's agreement to not really compete too hard.
>>
>>52953099
If they try anything I will just end the service and switch ISP, I have like 20 to choose from and all with at most a month long contracts
>>
As a person who works for an ISP in europe I can tell you sooner or later it will come over here.
Thanks to Video Streaming the traffic exploded in recent years and cross financing heavy usage users with normies is no longer an option.
>>
>>52953166
Where in Europe are you? How much do you pay for your internet?
>>
>>52953107

> Push data caps because company wants to charge for use

Thanks corporate America.
>>
>>52953252
American consumers are cucks who will gladly cough up a lot of money for convenience and a fancy marketing pitch, very few fight for better deals or take their business elsewhere in search of one.

it's why banks can get away with charging you money for a checking account that bears no interest and has a minimum balance, they know most people think changing banks is too much of a hassle to bother with, so they pay up instead.

As it stands Im paying $42 a month for a 25/10 connection through Optimum and I do get the full bandwidth 99% of the time. No caps, very few outages etc.

Its sad that people think youre being an entitled bitch when you talk about data caps here in the land of burgers. Im not whining about not having unlimited 1Gb/s a month for $25. Im bitching about companies charging $50 for 200GB a month of 10/10 with no rollover or anything and people are like "but anon internet is in short supply apparently. Just like gas prices gp up or down based on supply".

People are fucking stupid.
>>
>>52953272
Anon how am i supposed to take my business elsewhere when Comcast is a fucking monopoly for most of my state.
>>
>>52953311
it's not a cut and dried thing.
Comcast officially has a cap everywhere but only enforces it in certain markets, and in varying ways. I'm sure the other companies are the same.
>>
>>52953344
You? Yeah, you can't. Most people that can don't bother to though, which is how these cozy monopolies and oligopolies come to be.

>data caps keep getting lower
>download sizes for movies and games keep getting larger

If they keep pushing these caps so hard it's gonna blow up in their face soon. GTAV was like 60GB which is nearly half of some people's caps. Imagine the millions of confused mothers calling wondering why their internet has gone to shit after Timmy downloaded three games he bought during a Steam sale.
>>
>>52953395
You act like they'll care. They'll just five you a sales pitch as to why their "premium unlimited package for the low lowbprice of only $160/mo" is worth it.
>>
At least TWC won't be implementing any data caps anytime soon, unless Charter manages to do a buyout.

If that happens, the only other provider here is AT&T.... fuck.
>>
>>52953473
In AT&T areas you also have DSL Extreme (a reseller, Google them) if TWC (or Charter) ever gets caps because DSLX doesn't have them.
>>
>>52953099
Luckily my country got multiple ISPs competing for costumers so if one were to even try to put datacaps everyone would just leave them

Instead they are all switching over to fiber because they realize that's what people want when people leave their shitty ADSL service
>>
>>52953004
Data caps ?

Not in my country.
>>
>>52953558
I see, well that at least gives me an option if TWC ever implements caps.

Gonna be a bit hard to go from 300/20 (350/25 with over-provisioning) to 24/3, but oh well, I'd rather have no cap than high speed and a cap.
>>

>>
>>52955452
>How?
How about stop fucking using comcast and go outside their offices with signs and megaphones saying that you're not gonna take this oligopoly bullshit. I'd probably go so far as to threaten violence but that's probably too far for most people. Just get a bunch of fed up comcast users and hippie kids from your local college and tell them about how bad this """""capitalist company""""" is and you'll have a shitstorm on your hands even if you decide to kick your heels up for the remainder of the time. If my isp did something like that I probably wouldn't stop until their name was synonymous with rape and white privileged.
>>
They're pathetically trying to save their cable TV business from Netflix and Youtube. It's really that simple.
>>
>>52955626
a better way to do that is to advertise that they actually have a cable tv business

i used them about 2 years ago or so and they were just bundling with directv. i had no idea they do tv themselves now.
>>
I live within 5 miles of a major peering center. TFW I could buy my bandwidth from them instead of paying cuckcast for shit tier internet.

I want Google Fiber to deploy faster. Not because I'd willingly give my data to a literal advertising megacorp, but because it's making ISPs shit bricks.

Capitalism doesn't fucking work without competition. ISPs can't be allowed to have gentlemen's agreements and plan out duopolies for maximum jewry.

>>52955415
>go out to protest
>pigs deploy Stingrays
>data on who went to protest mysteriously "leaks" to the ISPs

>>
>>52953099
We've had zero caps since ADSL was introduced right after Y2K. If any company introduces caps on home broadband they're gonna go bankrupt real quick because there is so much competition here as we don't have an oligarchy like the US.
>>

I find it funny how different eastern Europe is from the west.
I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere for years I've had 100/100 for ~10$ a month.
But we don't really have unlimited 4G LTE, everyone puts data caps after which you're back to almost dial up speeds.
The best you can get is 300GB/month for 25$ on a 2 year contract.
