Yes, it has pretty good codec, calls are private (idk if encrypted) because they're not calls, you need to join server and then a channel with a person you want to speak.
Discord is a good alternative with multiplatform support, it has some nice features like picture and video embedding on links, but can't do video chat

You have to take into account that Skype needs to save every call and webcam chat you make in case Microsoft needs it so if you do a lot of video chat that's why it's so big. Unless you have something to hide there's nothing to worry about.
