It's simply not enough to just pass. That doesn't teach you enough. You learn what you learn in 3 years in college in about 4 months of working.

During college, you can't just go to college for 4 hours, listen to the professors and then expect to be fine. You're not. You need to take initiative. Create programs. Put those skills to work. Only this way you will realize how much there is that you don't understand.

I remember John Carmack lecturing at QuakeCon (2013?) about lights and physics in video game development. He admitted that very, very little of physics actually matters, as in it pertains to very little of development. And then, the artists usually are able to make up for any realistic portrayal of physics with other means.
>>
>>52872580
this. video game physics is very different from real physics. and video game physics is much more aesthetic.

i imagine though that good video game physics is implemented by people with some interest in real physics.

To be fair, installing GNU/Linux makes many programming tasks a lot of things easier to do, because of the package manager and debugger software that requires the OS source code to write.

Most people I see on here seem to think C isn't worth learning because C++ is better.

>dudebro goes for CS degree because he likes videogames and facebook

GPA matters more with STEM degrees than it does elsewhere. You need to prove that you really have the hard skills nailed down, because otherwise, you're going to deliver a broken product.

With programming jobs, employers are also looking for a portfolio of personal projects, unrelated to employment or classes. It shows that you can work and problem solve without being directed all the time. How many of those dudebros do you think code in their spare time?

The fact that the jobs pay a lot when you actually get them says that there is something of a shortage of workers that employers view as qualified, and that they just don't trust Mr. 2.0 GPA from a no-name university and no personal projects to be a good programmer.

You sound paranoid.

The only people who give a fuck if you're into anime are insecure manchildren who would be forced to acknowledge themselves as trash if they judged people using criteria that actually mattered, kids fresh out of school who haven't had the responsibilities of adulthood hit them yet, and unskilled workers/welfare babies who are going to be acting like they're still in middle school when they're 60 because they never learned to get their priorities straight (there's a reason why they're driving around in a beat-up junker when their 20s are ancient history).

Your boss isn't going to care. He just wants to know if you're a good programmer and if you're capable of working with the team. Actually, he might be into anime himself. It's pretty common in the field.

To be fair, it's hardly unheard of for CS majors to go unemployed, particularly those with bad grades, no internships, and no personal portfolio.

But yeah, it's pretty misleading. They should talk about median income for degrees instead, and possibly what percentage are actually employed in their major's field. A fair number of the fields right of architecture have very few jobs in the field and the jobs that they do have pay like shit. They probably found work elsewhere. A history major working as a mail room clerk is still employed, and probably not happy. On the flip side, putting yourself in the employer's shoes, would you expect the CS graduate to stick around in your mail room?
>>

>>
>>52874680

They're not employed in coding because they choose not to pursue it. If it's so important to you that women and minorities work in coding in a country where people can make their own life choices, then if you're a woman or minority, its your responsibility to become a coder instead of becoming some social studies or journalist bitch who just uselessly whines about it.

Or would you prefer to live in a communist state where the white man actually has the power that you seem to be trying to allot to them and can make the decision about what you're going to do with your life for you and force you to become a coder against your will to "fix the inequality"?

This problem has been manufactured by people who simply hate guys that are introverted, nerdy, etc. Same shit why feminists attack video games but not hip hop, they're not attacking actual misogynists, just the ones they don't like

Keep telling yourself SJW doesn't effect you. They're every female hr ever.
>>
>>52875994

Women != feminists. Most women can see the problems with the feminist narrative, and they don't want feminists cutting into their fun, belittling their accomplishments, filling their offices with incompetent self-entitled workers, or forcing them to grant fake respect to horrible people, either.

The real issue is that a lot of feminists and racial activists get into left wing politics, journalism, social sciences, and education strictly to push their agendas. We need a counter-push of people who are against these policies to enter those same fields, which actually seems to be in the cards, but is unfortunately going to take some time to set up.

>Yeah, good fucking luck not having the road cut off the moment that you dare to raise your voice against the narrative.

Fighting the status quo is always a dangerous, uphill battle against the powers that be. That doesn't mean that you're doomed to fail before you even start. We have numbers and reason on our side.
>>
>>52876127
>Women != feminists.
Women typically follow the cliches and trends of their group, they're more collectivist (or more politely, "social"). So when a manager is looking for HR, they look for sociology grads. These people typically follow the intellectual fashion of a sociology schools, which is feminism, extreme left, etc.

Say what you want, I know my bogan future wife isn't a man hater, but her friend in HR is.

HR is what's hurting us, it's what's caused this graduate unemployment. If hiring isn't being done meritocratically without any adherence to identity (race, orientation, culture, religion) there's absolutely going to be a productivity loss. Thus: unemployment.

The HR people are under pressure from the aforementioned groups. The company looks "bad" if their employees are mostly white males, regardless of the circumstances around that. My mom's actually an HR person (it's one of her jobs, anyways), and she agrees with my arguments against affirmative action, but still follows it, because it's what her employer demands of her.

The only thing that will fix the whole problem on a mass scale is a complete shakeup of left wing politics. People need to begin organizing against this group that wants to pretend like we're still in the middle of the civil rights era and attempts explain every social issue in terms of how the white man oppresses everybody else, pushing fierce double standards and dodging personal responsibility in the process.
>>
>>52876346
>The HR people are under pressure from the aforementioned groups.
No. They're not. They're EDUCATED to be how they are, they were INDOCTRINATED via their own collectivist mentality. This is not an organised conspiracy, this may not even be conscious despite how real it is, ultimately all that really needs to change is tertiary education.

>The company looks "bad" if their employees are mostly white males,
Employee statistics, least of all demographic statistics, do not need to be made known. Companies are profit maximisers, not populists, they want profit and productivity it's in their best interest to hire not for diversity, but for who will provide the most productivity.

No, this comes directly from hr.

>but still follows it, because it's what her employer demands of her.
No, trust me, she's patronising you.

There is no organising or moving against the real enemy, which is Marxism. It's just an idea, which is why it's such a malignant enemy, it slips into schools via professors who know nothing except what's in their books, given to impressionable young women to make them feel good about redistributing opportunities based on their own identity politics.

Again, this problem has an obvious cause.
>>

>No. They're not.

Yes, they are. Activist groups will bring your company under fire for being racist/sexist unless you hire the black woman over the white man. Your partners might enforce this by withdrawing support.

It's like being scared to argue against feminism for fear of your career, but on a company-wide scale. There's pressure to conform, even if you don't personally agree with it. The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.

>Employee statistics, least of all demographic statistics, do not need to be made known. Companies are profit maximisers, not populists, they want profit and productivity it's in their best interest to hire not for diversity, but for who will provide the most productivity.

"Companies are logical machines who always act in the interest of efficiency first" is a big, stupid myth. Companies are ran by people, and they're always doing stupid shit in the name of the executives' egos or due to cases like this where a narrative is being enforced and everybody is scared to challenge it. The game industry is an example that you're likely familiar with.

>No, trust me, she's patronising you.

Where the fuck do you live that HR has any fucking opinion on who gets hired? It is their fucking job to provide hiring managers with eligible candidates, the hiring manager ultimately chooses.

If the hiring manager wants to skip HR altogether, they will open up a contract to hire position.

American kids need to quit chasing programming as a career. If you're a Computer Science major, consider other options.

Knowing C+ is going to help you, but jobs in Networking and IT are always going to be in demand. Because they require a bit if interpersonal skills as well as computer skills, Marcus and Charles from USA are more marketable than Advik from India and Son from Korea.

I know, you wanted to be Zuckerberg, but that ship sailed 15 years ago.

If you do CS or CIS, you need to do it in a city where there are a lot of internship opportunities available and get your foot in the door early.

So, basically, treat it like it's any other worthwhile degree program.

CIS/IS is very different from CS.

CS is focused more on concepts and programming, CIS is more of a general survey of computer solutions for businesses.

Internships are important for any job. In CS you have the dream of one day working for Google and living on the west coast. In IS, you have a better chance of finding a job out of college.

>>52876923
I have had a few coworkers who worked at google, all of them said the same thing. When you work at google, google is your life, there is nothing outside of google.

A lot of people who work at startups and places like google will actually leave the field entirely after 10 years and do shit like start a coffee shop or sandwich shop or hobby store or what not because they get completely burnt out.

You see shit like that all over the place in silicon valley, my cousin is dating a guy who worked himself into health problems and once his stock options vested, literally retired and now is living off of savings while he works as a barista.

Literally every other person in India right now is a CS grad, the industry is so oversaturated that jumping in the CS stream now means there's unemployment and huge debt waiting for you
CS grads from India are terrible, I asked my CS grad friend whats the difference between a Mebibyte and a megabyte, and he was blank, he had no idea, nor did any of his batch mates. I knew it because I fuck around a lot with Linux, because I'm a NEET (but that's unrelated to using Linux)

You're just mad I'll be making your entire life's wage in a fight or two before I'm 25.

What about doctors, what about researchers, say medical ones just as an example. "Good work smith nice work on building that vaccine, I'd say you worked hard for that, but you know some autist on 4chan disputes what you do is work"

All I know is when I saw this trend of kids that had no buisness in CS join the major, I jumped ship to Computer Engineering. From what I've seen the people are much smarter on average and actually have a good mindset for problem solving. At my university it's also harder to get into CE or EE so it requires you to not be autistic. So far I'm glad I made the switch since the number of internships available literally doubled since now I have programming and hardware experience.

>wanted to code games
i saw so many neckbeards in my undergrad who thought this is what CS would allow them to do. some of them even got buttfrustrated with me when i pointed out that developing games wouldn't be the same as playing games.

now i'm actually glad some of them work in game studios. the few times i hear from them it's clear they're under stupid amounts of pressure and stress.
>>
>>52878101
It's basically a CS and EE double major. You pretty much have to take all the core classes of both majors along with additional ones based on what you want you want to specialize in. I've learned a lot and I'm really happy I switched. It's hard as fuck but it's definitely going to pay off.
>>
>>52878045
And the difference between me and and an NFL player is that they get hit in training everyday. At this point I fight once or twice a month, and have ended 100% of my kickboxing fights in the first round, and all but one of my boxing fights, one went to decision because I got food poisoning and was gassed in the first.
I spar MAYBE once every two weeks anymore with very light contact with green guys that don't hit hard and are several weight classes below me, football players are doing full effort drills every day.
Yet again, sour grapes, you are trying to make yourself feel better by downplaying my life, when in reality you are just mad at yourself that you are getting paid much less than me while you wasted time, money, and energy going to get some dumb degree while I'm already making more than you and I dropped out of an associate's degree program.

Anon, it doesn't say that there will be 1.4 million MORE jobs, just that there are 1.4 million total, all of which are taken by much more experienced programmers.

The US graduates about 50k computer science students a year, which is a much more reasonable number.

That makes no sense, the purpose of the graph is to illustrate new job opportunities not that the current market is saturated. It's from Code.org that is intended to encourage new people into the industry, not tell them there's no jobs and that they should fuck off elsewhere.

The graph is a little poorly made, but it's probably intended to show 1.4m new jobs, not filled jobs.

CS seems very healthy here and the local gvmt is begging people to get into the field because there will be x number of excess jobs than graduates in the future.

Is it a different story in mainland UK?

This.

Any retard can carry a box or dig a ditch, and they get paid appropriately. Only lower industry is the service industry.

Work that calls on mental prowess is tiring in its own right. You have to focus hard for a long time, and it inevitably becomes tedious and/or stressful at times. At the end of the day, you're just as fucking done as would be after a day of putting boxes into a truck (no stranger to this, BTW), if not more so.

I'll also say that STEM isn't referred to as the fields that society absolutely needs in order to function for nothing. If we didn't have any boxers, we'd just be out one form of entertainment (a form that's not even all that popular these days, mostly because the talent pool died off when people realized that making a career out of getting into fights inevitably turns you into a cripple). On the flip side, if you didn't have people sitting behind desks spending long hours designing everything from the material used for the ring to the lighting, you wouldn't even have a good arena for the boxing match to take place in, much less a big flashy HBO broadcast. The work of people sitting behind desks today is also going to result in an even higher quality experience for fans both in the seats and at home in the future. Someday, as biology makes progress, they'll probably even be able to undo the damage done to the dumbass participants!

The work of these so-called non-workers are what distinguish us from monkeys. A STEM worker's ability and effort can literally be a life or death difference, in many different ways. Their work is that important. For our part, CS majors are responsible for designing algorithms used in everything from medical equipment to lab testing equipment to transportation to security.

It is because the government of the UK and Australia are filled with luddites who are outright hostile to technology.

I wouldn't setup shop in a shitty surveillance state, that will be made worse if the snoopers charter goes through. Nor in a place without decent infrastructure that is held back by dinosaurs in government who can't comprehend cutting corners on infrastructure spending is foolish. Of course they handed the NBN to the Telstra monopoly so it will stay shit too, not like it wasn't already lagging behind other countries.
