You control all services you run. You can turn features you are not using off so you can limit the number of ways to get to your system. Learning about your system is a good way to keep it safe.

Limit the number of people you have to trust (servers you rely on for content and services)
Encrypt the drive.
Never leave the computer while it is turned on.
