My sister bought herself a Macbook Air, and it's given me my first chance to use a Macbook. I think it's actually pretty good. Why do some people on /g/ hate on it? Even I fucking did. The touchpad, screen, and keyboard are actually pretty good. It's very thin and light weight with a good aluminum build. I need a laptop that I can move around easily and take it to places that I might need it. I can get one of these for around 400 used, what is a good laptop for that or cheaper?
>>
I'm currently using rn and the keyboard feels good, but I can tell that the quality isn't the best.
>>
>>52695031
yeah, it looks good. that's the point of a macbook.
however, you'll find that the software selection is useless and it's almost impossible to carry around for the real portable use they advertise
get a used thinkpad for half that price and install gnu/linux
this guy does a good job of explaining, but i think he uses windows
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFWJP5yCujw
>>
they are all fine, airs are some of the better cost ratio ones you can get, but the screen resolution leaves much to be desired. but considering how many people jerk off to x series thinkpads which have the same resolution, whatever. (yes i realize $200 vs like $1200 is something to talk about).

the problem is you end up spending like fucking $2500-$3000 for a modern mbp, and the screen is nothing special anymore so that leaves you with the trackpad.

yes, the trackpad on these things is worth a premium, but only to a certain extent. i fucking love the trackpad on my 2011, but i spent like $2300 on this fucker and then later added my own ram and ssd upgrade

>>
>macbook air
good value for the money especially because of dat build quality and dat battery life.

That being said you should go for a macbook pro if you're willing to spend the cash. More powerful and you get dat retina display. All of Apple's products are exceptionally well built and have a very "premium" feel to them but that feel does come at a price. I use Apple products everyday (2015 27" iMac, 2015 Macbook Pro, iPhone 6 and Apple Watch) but I'm not some shitty fanboy and I'll be the first one to tell you that you are paying a lot for the materials used and the insane build quality rather than hardware. That being said the entire Mac line is comprised of some very powerful machines that run extremely well due to the insanely optimized OS. The only Apple computers that aren't worth buying at this point are the Mac Mini and the new MacBook thing that has an Intel Core M in it and one fucking USB Type-C for $1300

also I can tell you that the MacBook pro has an amazing battery life. I took this off the charge at 8:00a.m. and used it all day at work, played some light vidya on it, and watched a shit ton of jewtube videos on and I'm still good to go for a few hours
>>
>>52695352
Hell naw dude. They are all over $1,000, I don't have that much money. Especially after just finishing a build and buying a PS4
>>
>>52695295
Still functions like new, looks like new externally. Never had any failures where apple is to blame. Been using it mainly since 2012. The only problem would be the overheating problem. Do some heavier computing, hit Tj max, and your thigh gets hot. The plastic cover between the monitor and main body has a lot of mini cracks too, which I think is caused by the blowing hot air.
>>

>>
>>52695498
not a problem.

If you do get a macbook air make sure you get a model that has an SSD in it. The apple SSD's are the fastest SSD's in production right now.

the 2015 models have a 2GB/s read speed and a 1.25GB/s write speed. They're fucking insane.
>>
>>52695145
>you will literally never get any real work done with the bullshit restrictions apple put on you
Don't know what you're talking about. There's usually a mac alternative for software. If there isn't I just need to run windows/linux in parallels.

If you're talking about installing software from outside the app store, it's literally one change you need to make in the system settings.

My back hurts after walking with more than 4kg of groceries.
>>
>>52695572
Damn that is insane. I'm really considering one the price tag is kinda high for a newer 2015 model. I spent 660 on my desktop and I got

i5 3470
16GB of RAM
1TB HDD
EVGA 500W PSU
Zotac GTX 970

So spending more than that on a laptop is kinda insane, but it might be worth it.
>>
>>52695563
> How would you like having a 15 pound laptop in your bookbag, or having it on your stomach at night while your in bed.

15 pounds in a book bag would be light compared to the textbooks I had when I was at college. A 15 pound laptop would be built like a tank so I'd appreciate the fact I could do whatever I wanted to my bookbag and not worry about damaging the laptop.

15 pounds on your stomach is nothing. A transmission on your stomach is a little uncomfortable but not a laptop. There's no way you can change a tire and not be able to effortlessly handle any laptop that is currently made.
>>
>>52695691
LMAO! You don't put a transmission on your stomach. Changing a tire is 3 minutes not the hours that you might have to carry a laptop. We can all agree that your a ignorant faggot.

I apologize for calling you a shill. It just seems like a shill type of post. I mean, there's always a Mac thread everyday.

I'll be real with you. The 11 inch air starts at $1100 here (Canada), yet a cheap $200 Windows laptop (Asus x205ta) has a screen just as good as it, minus the matte coating.

When you get to battery life, the Dell XPS 13 1080 model gets more than both the 11 and 13 inch Macbook air, while having a much better screen, no bezels, and a smaller overall size. They are completely overpriced for what they offer. You could argue the trackpad is better, and it is. But compared to the XPS, its not worth paying even a $50 premium for. The XPS has a trackpad that is 95% as good as the pros (the only Macbook I've spent more than a month with, so I'm using it as a comparison).
>>
>>52695678
Yup. All of the new MacBooks have them except for the non retina MacBook Pro
>>
>>52695461
That hinge issue and heating issue is definitely something you can blame Apple for.
>>
>>52695729
>LMAO! You don't put a transmission on your stomach.

You do when you change one without a jack. You put the thing on top of you and bench press it while your buddy bolts it in.

But you seriously can change a tire but can't effortlessly lift 15 pounds for a day? My backpack weighed at least thirty in university and I carried it miles every day. I've hiked 5 miles in a day with a 70 rucksack. I'm not fit at all.

Kek, Windows is more efficient than OS X. It's not optimized worth shit, and it constantly breaks WiFi with every new update.

Also, Apple computers have a very high rate of failure (just look up all the logic board issues). Build quality is only perceived. It isn't actually any better than other similarly priced laptops. In some cases worse, as some oems use carbon fiber these days, which is leagues ahead of aluminum. Then there's the business laptops, which are made of magnesium and shit.
>>
>>52695790

NP bro, and Thanks for acknowledging that. Yea there always is dude and I hate them, but I did truly have a question.

Are does cheapo laptops any good? Might be good enough for what I need it for.

Dell XPS are great laptops, I like the older ones, pretty cheap actually for the specs.
>>
>>52695572
You mean Samsung SSDs that Apple uses are really fast. Iirc, Dell has also started using them in the new XPS laptops and business/gaming shit.

And yeah, they're incredible. Apple got that shit right for being the first to use them commercially.

Also, side note, fucking oled displays in laptops are a thing now! Fucking HP and Dell! Who would have thought those dinosaurs would step up and be first.

>>
>>52695903
It's really good if you want long battery life, browse the web, and use office (minus huge spreadsheets of course). I get 10 hours a charge out of mine, and its small and light, so carrying to and from school with all my books is easy. And it's cheap, so getting a few scratches or anything isn't anything I worry about. It honestly depends on which cheap laptop you pick. There are some good ones and bad ones. I'd wholeheartedly recommend the Asus x205ta though.

I agree. XPS stuff is great. I haven't gotten one yet, though I've been planning to. Just waiting for next year to see if they include more than one USB C port. Right now its 2 USB 3.1, and 1 USB C, and I want the reverse of that for future proofing.

More than likely they're not going to do it though because the retina display is still fucking GOAT. If anything they'll drop a fully 4k rMBP but I wouldn't want that desu because I already have a 5k iMac and honestly its not THAT much better than what's already on the MacBook Pro. Don't get me wrong, It's REALLY fucking nice on the 27" iMac but on a 13" or 15" screen it really doesn't make much of a difference

If you prefer Macs and you're on this board you're retarded. It's not about comparing the specs of the machine to rival machines. it's the fact that everything that has to do with Apple hardware or the OS is forcefully shoved down your throat.

This is a technology board. People prefer business grade laptops here because it allows them to easily mod every single piece of hardware on it. Before you mature /v/irgins migrated here, we used to value shit like that.

I gave it to my son for his birthday so he can do his homework. It was pretty slow by today's standards anyways.

You really should go the MacBook Pro route if you're looking to have a computer that will last you a while. If you want to buy used I'd suggest looking for a 2013 model or newer as they still have some life left in them.

Something else to consider is Apple's financing. If you qualify for their Barclays visa apple rewards card your first purchase of $1000 or more will have 0% interest for 18 months. That's how I bought this MacBook. Not because I could't afford to outright pay for it but because why drop $1550 right now when I can make a few $300 or $400 payments over a few months at 0% interest.

After it's paid off that card is going straight in the shredder though because I absolutely refuse to use credit cards under most circumstances.
