No. The main point was that you had 6/12 slots instead of 4/8 (or even 2, but boards like that are a lower tier), as it's a multiple of 3 it made sense to make the boards triple channel.

I haven't gotten to really play with enough otherwise similarly speced DDR4 boxes to know, but similarly speced DDR2 to DDR3 boxes were a huge improvement. You'd notice it outside of synthetic benchmarks. Some of the newest boxes we're getting at work have DDR4, but there hasn't been enough load to see a difference yet, and they're work, so I can't really play too much with them.
