>>
I've never seen clearview, ever.
Every sign here has been highway gothic for as long as I can remember.
>>
I'd just like to say that I looked up "clearview" and discovered that there exist nerds and autists and entire forums dedicated to fucking highway design.
What the fuck.

As long as it's perfectly readable and not something retarded like comic sans it's fine

I'm travelling at like 130+ km/h anyways so it;s not like I'll be seeing it for long

If you are willing to argue about something, there will be at least one other person to argue with you.
Make a thread about anything tech related on here and people will argue for hours about.

See the jobs vs. gates thread right now

I can't barely tell the two apart and I'm not completely blind I think.

Holy SHIT
>>
Highway Gothic is plainly more attractive and more easily differentiated.
>>
>>52679714
Second one looks much better, as I value doubling by distance from the shithole that is bethlehem.
>>
>>52680166
the bottom one is clearly compressed differently. that image is not a fair comparison of text-rendering algorithms.
>>
>>52680457
Compression has nothing to do with it, you retard. The top font is superior.
>>
>>52680302
Comic sans is actually insanely readable. People with dyslexia prefer it over traditional fonts like TNR or Arial.
>>
>>52680302
Wrong my blind little pig. Hundreds of millions of road signs are passed each day. The difference in legibility even by the tiniest percent can be the difference between life and death at this scope. Take a Calligraphy class at your local community college.

PA of course fell hard for the Clearview meme, which made local street signs terribly generic.

do you have a single fact to back that up because that just might be too hilarious to be true

I've read the same from supposedly dyslexic people. Their reasoning is that each glyph is so unique they're much easier to differentiate.
>>
>>52680601
not him, but this is off point. none of those things (even in confluence) should cause someone to die. in his ridiculously exaggerated world, he's totally right.

you might be able to argue that old people who are distracted or confused or whatever will see the exit and not realize it's theirs until it's too late to *safely* merge over to the exit lane, and then they'll do something dangerous, but how narrow a slice of situations are we designing for?

i agree that the font matters, but between highway gothic and clearview, if someone has trouble reading either (outside of fairly extenuating circumstances), i think that's on the driver.

i happen to think that the states in the US are criminally lax about whom they license (and i'm from california, not some dickbag in another country looking down my nose at everyone else), so i realize that my ideal solution - to revoke the licenses of elderly people as their faculties diminish - is unreasonable, but that's the best solution. dealing with news stories like elderly folks tearing through a farmer's market or falling asleep and plowing into a bus or whatever shouldn't be part of the norm.

i know that we have cars baked into our national culture, but we shouldn't. it's bad for us.
>>
Lol I know that sign. I went to school at lehigh university. Girls weren't the best looking but boy were they easy.

This, such minor differences in font don't matter when the driver's can't even tell the gas pedal from the brakes

Fonts actually can't be protected like most works of art. The name of the font and any logo that makes use of the font can be protected but there's nothing stopping anyone from making a functionally equivalent font with a different name.

Other than the fact that making the rendering routines is a bitch.

That sounds like bullshit. There wouldn't be studios that do nothing but make fonts if that was the case, and it would be impossible to licence them, because people could just copy them and say "oh, this isn't helvetica, it's 'melvetica', it just so happens to look identical in every way"

The top sign's font looks better from that distance.

Does the large font spacing in the lower sign work better at a greater distance? The pictures are taken from much closer than where I try to initially read a roadsign.

well that's part of the point, connecting the whole country was the reason they built it.

in any case if you wanna get autistic about how highway signage differs based on where you are, exit numbering differs. Note how there's exits 2E and 2W? Most places don't number east/west like that, it's just the mile marker number, appended with A, B, C, etc if there's more than one exit within a mile. Until a few years ago, one major expressway near me (I-294, a bypass around Chicago) didn't have it's exits numbered at all. For a long time it varied state to state whether exits were numbered by mile marker or simply sequentially, but most of that's been moved to mile-marker now. Interstate 19 in Arizona is signed in kilometers. You'll see different schemes for whether or not to put upcoming exits on several signs on one gantry, or put a list of exits on one sign. (roughly speaking, the former is found in urban areas and the latter in rural areas). You'll also find limited-access, grade-separated, high-speed, multilane roads in general called different things in different parts of the country - parkway, freeway, expressway, or just "highway", which often doesn't refer to surface streets. The only term that's not used in any part of the country is the European word "motorway".
