removing ports like the headphone jack certainly should move in the direction of water resistance. anything that should conduct electricity (like a headphone jack, which is supposed to facilitate the transmission of signals) would be a bit of work to prevent it from becoming a vector for shorting out the device.
i think the bigger question, as that guy you replied to alluded to, is whether we're going to see a change in charging premise. replacing the lightning port with something contactless would be just about all they need to make water resistance trivial. making speakers water resistant to ~a few feet is pretty trivial.
i wouldn't WANT to see a change forcing everyone to buy new cables, but seeing as i wouldn't upgrade for at least a year anyway (my 6 is just holding up too well to deal with the time cost of replacing it, let alone the dollar cost), i don't know if i'd care too much.

Floppy and CD drives were already largely dead at the time that Apple dropped them. Apple wasn't even the first to produce laptops without CD drives.
Everyone still uses the 3.5mm jack and nothing they can currently replace it with would provide a better experience, nor would it be cheaper.
That's another thing, USB drives were more cost effective at the time they dropped the optical drive and they have better performance and are more versatile. In comparison the Lightning connector has no positives over the 3.5mm jack, it doesn't even have an analog channel which means any Lightning to 3.5mm converter will have to incorporate a DAC which will make it the most expensive converter on the market and most will have a shitty DAC.
Also, Oppo released a phone a year ago with no 3.5mm jack, so Apple aren't even first.

Apple owns the encryption keys on iCloud. Most of the content you back up to it isn't encrypted with the device's keys, that's why you can sync the content between devices.
Anything you upload to iCloud Apple can hand over unencrypted.
If you want any security in cloud backups you should encrypt first, then upload.
