But at that time Vista was already well adopted, and ran really well on my first build.

aww yiss, I remember my HDD going again and again with the pc on idle. You got error messages out of fucking nowhere. 1 out of 5 boots failed. It was a fucking disaster. Pirate custom versions (like Black Edition) actually worked better than Microsoft's. It was insane.
It was good if you had the hardware for it. At the time a lot of OEM computers were built around XP and OEMs were slapping vista ready stickers on them, so vista ran slow as fuck which pissed people off.
There's pretty much no computer out today that couldn't run vista blazing fast. By the time 7 came around Vista had already cleared out all the craptops and shit desktops so 7 basically received none of that criticism.

vista was pretty much windows 7's developmental stage, it started out as shit but ended as a good solid OS then they slapped the windows 7 logo on it and resold it.

Windows Vista was disastrous for DX10/11 adoption, and is the reason DX9 existed longer than it should've, and STILL exists as an API for at least the random handful of games released to this day, as people were still hugging their XP installations all the way into 2010, maybe even longer if Steam hardware surveys were any indicator

It was released spectacularly unfinished.
That's not to say that it was full of bad ideas - Windows 7 is basically the finished Windows Vista - but it should never have come out when it did, and I think the only reason that it did was that if they hadn't released that year, Dell would have sued them for breach of contract.

Also I remember my friend from high school bought windows vita from a shop the day it came out for like $700 with drug money or something, that guy was insane.
It did have a few hiccups, nothing that really bothered me personally. The idea that Vista was basically a beta for 7 is pretty spot on. So far the only ms OSs I've gone out of my way to avoid have been 8 (whoever thought that was an acceptable ui for a keyboard and mouse should be shot) and ME (which was just awful).

Vista was my first OS upgrade.

I run it for seven years now and it feels like the alpha of Windows 7 which I have on my laptop.
The thing that bugs me the most is how horribly slow the explorer is. Opening a folder or settings shouldn't take seconds.
There is also this weird bug that when I open a folder it sometimes shows the thumbnails of another random folder for a second. I'm always afraid that porn thumbnails show up when I invite friends over to watch a movie.
