Was it really that bad?
>>
>>52662014

no

its just retards got upset it didn't run on their 256mb ram, pentium 4 machines
>>
I liked it, I used service pack 2, with a low range computer at the time. I never even knew it had problems back then. It seemed fine to me, I even liked the art style.
>>
>>52662014
yes, yes it was
>>
>>52662014
At first yeah, driver issues everywhere. After a few service packs it was better, but there's no reason to use it over 7
>>
its was a little resource hungry for its day but desu it was my favorite windows os.
>>
>>52662014
It was awful
>>
No. Being a poorfag I've been rocking vista for the better part of a decade and its still fine for my needs.
>>
>>52662014
At the time, with driver issues and a glut of software that demanded admin rights to run? Yeah, it was terrible.
After a few service packs and a better software ecosystem? It was fine.
7 was better though. 7 is still the best.
>>
>>52662014
windows distros are like CoD installments

every other one is great
>>
It was alright for desktops but it would fry most consumer laptops.
>>
>>52662014
No it wasn't. It was just because butthurt XPfags couldn't run their 2003 era software on a newer OS. Hating Windows Vista was just the mainstream thing to do, like hating George Bush was. Normies are so fucking sheepish.

Win 7 is the best regardless.
>>
>>52662030

That had stickers on them saying that it would.
>>
>>52662145
>MW2
>BO1
>MW3
>BO2
>Ghosts
>AW
>BO3
CoD is more like good good good okay okay shit shit shit. It's funny because they get less innovative each game too.
>>
>>52662035
it was fine after service pack 1, everyone knows windows releases are shit until the first service pack but vista really got hammered for it for some reason
>>
>>52662014
At least it didn't spy on you.
>>
Vista just came at a really bad time and introduced (relatively) radical changes that consumers weren't ready to adapt to.
>>
Ran it for several years.
It was shit.
>>
>>52662173
those stickers told you it could. it never told you how well.
regardless in 2006 most home pc's ran 512 mb or 1gb of ram vista really needs 2gb to operate comfortably. it was actually pretty good after the hardware caught up to it.
>>
>>52662014
I liked it and still have it on my Q6600 PC.
>>
>>52662014

Not particularly

It was the bad driver support that really put the nails in the coffin. Manufacturers were slow to release decent stable drivers so the entire thing turned into a hot mess.

nVidia was the guiltiest party in this
>>
>>52662290

Doesn't a lot of software refuse to install on it now?
>>
>>52662368
what? when did this happen?
i know support was shaky for about a year after release but iv never ran into any problems after that.
>>
>>52662435

I thought I heard that Chrome and Firefox and stuff won't load on Vista anymore. Guess I was wrong--I went from XP to 7, and can count on one hand the number of times I ever even touched a box with Vista on it.
>>
>>52662014
I totally agree with you op. I used Vista for a couple of years on my gaming laptop and it worked fine. I don't know why people hate it so much ? I switched to Gnu/Linux and I like it better than any windows I have used
>>
I actually waited a while before upgrading to 7.
But at that time Vista was already well adopted, and ran really well on my first build.

I liked it. Was a huge anti-vista memer before this, though.
>>
>>52662493
7 is Superior to vista but vista was a good upgrade from xp after microsoft worked out all the kinks.
>>
>>52662014
At the beginning, it was problematic. Nowdays its pretty much 7 with a different skin.
>>
You don't know hell until you've tried using one of those "Vista ready" laptops that had 1 GB of RAM and could barely load more than a web browser without the entire system slowing to a crawl.
>>
>>52662658
This was especially bad because if you slapped XP on the same laptop, it ran fine.
>>
>>52662014
Yeah, it was. Really bad. Most people stayed with the previous version and then skipped to the next version. It was bad.
>>
>>52662658
good times, i remember buying a Compaq v5000 with 512mb of ram from staples and having the salesmen straight up tell me that sticker was bullshit.
>>
>>52662014
aww yiss, I remember my HDD going again and again with the pc on idle. You got error messages out of fucking nowhere. 1 out of 5 boots failed. It was a fucking disaster. Pirate custom versions (like Black Edition) actually worked better than Microsoft's. It was insane.
>>
It was good if you had the hardware for it. At the time a lot of OEM computers were built around XP and OEMs were slapping vista ready stickers on them, so vista ran slow as fuck which pissed people off.

There's pretty much no computer out today that couldn't run vista blazing fast. By the time 7 came around Vista had already cleared out all the craptops and shit desktops so 7 basically received none of that criticism.
>>
>>52662658
you need 2 gb and a duel core processor to really run it smoothly, higher end hardware for 2006.
>>
>>52662770
Don't forget the most retarded version of user account control ever, where it popped up every other second to ask your permission for completely mundane shit.
>>
>>52662797
Don't forget a decent GPU. Vista's software rendering was an afterthought. It's trash. You have to use classic theme just to get some sense of performance.
>>
vista was pretty much windows 7's developmental stage, it started out as shit but ended as a good solid OS then they slapped the windows 7 logo on it and resold it.
>>
>>52662814
you can disable UAC
>>
>>52662014

I liked using DreamScape with it

i remember watching in class in high school on my laptop running vista with my miku desktop assistant yelling at me in japanese that it was time for my next class.
THE NOSTALGIA IS REAL!

>Mr Salesman gave up his shill bonus so that we could be free from Vista
>Thank you Mr Salesman :')
>>
Windows Vista was disastrous for DX10/11 adoption, and is the reason DX9 existed longer than it should've, and STILL exists as an API for at least the random handful of games released to this day, as people were still hugging their XP installations all the way into 2010, maybe even longer if Steam hardware surveys were any indicator

Window 10 will repeat the cycle with DX12
>>
>>52663745
ya i was completely based back then and everyone loved me for it.
>>
>>52662014
Oh, absolutely. Longhorn is one of the all-time classic failed software projects, complete with a progress reboot.

It was released spectacularly unfinished.

That's not to say that it was full of bad ideas - Windows 7 is basically the finished Windows Vista - but it should never have come out when it did, and I think the only reason that it did was that if they hadn't released that year, Dell would have sued them for breach of contract.

This. With SP2 it's a decent os. Installed it two months ago and still prefer it over FromIndiaWithLoveOS10Botnet
>>
>>52662054
no telemetry on vista compared to 7. The market share of Vista is so low, M$ won't bother implementing it.
>>
This is kind of unrelated but dose anyone know there is a wiki that lists all global surface pro hardware iterations and their release dates as well as firmware information?

Also I remember my friend from high school bought windows vita from a shop the day it came out for like $700 with drug money or something, that guy was insane.
>>
It did have a few hiccups, nothing that really bothered me personally. The idea that Vista was basically a beta for 7 is pretty spot on. So far the only ms OSs I've gone out of my way to avoid have been 8 (whoever thought that was an acceptable ui for a keyboard and mouse should be shot) and ME (which was just awful).
>>
>>52662014
No, UAC can be disabled in the time it takes to google it and Vista brought about some interesting changes.

However, the only thing positive I can really say about Vista is that we wouldn't have 7 without it.
>>
Vista was my first OS upgrade.

Only now that I'm a little older do I realize what type of bullshit Vista put me through (UAC, lack of driver support, incessant HDD access), but at the time I was using it, I just accepted it as part of the deal.

Then W7 came along and I never looked back. It's what Vista should have been, and more.
>>
>>52662054
Windows 7 is Vista SP3
Boom
>>
>>52663905
Can confirm, I was running XP as late as 2014. Upgraded to Windows 7 that year and after 2 years of being on it moved to 8.1.
>>
>>52664779

>Implying Vista isn't just as much of a Botnet.

What delusional reality do you fucking live in again?
>>
Chrome just told me it will stop supporting Vista in April. I think this OS is finally dying.
>>
>>52668605
I didn't know there was still any support for Vista.
>>
>>52664826
>no telemetry on vista compared to 7

So don't install it on 7?
>>
It was fine, its just if one well known person vocalizes hate for something people mindlessly agree and shout it even louder.
>>
>>52662014
>was OS that only became usable after SP2 really that bad?

I dunno, was Windows ME really that bad?
>>
>>52662014
No. It was just made for modern PC's and yet retarded OEM's tried to put it on shitty toaster laptops.
Also retards who wanted to put them on Pentium 4's with 256mb ram.

Honestly, Vista was the last Windows release that got me really excited. 8 and 10 also were exciting but also kinda meh.

7 was one of the most boring Windows releases of all time, literally a reskinned Vista SP2. Fuck you all Win 7 retards.
>>
>>52662014
Yes it was trash.
/thread
>>
I run it for seven years now and it feels like the alpha of Windows 7 which I have on my laptop.

The thing that bugs me the most is how horribly slow the explorer is. Opening a folder or settings shouldn't take seconds.

There is also this weird bug that when I open a folder it sometimes shows the thumbnails of another random folder for a second. I'm always afraid that porn thumbnails show up when I invite friends over to watch a movie.

>Vista is bad meme
People only hated it because it didn't run on their shitty underpowered machines.

I had literally zero problems with Vista.

Windows 7 is essentially Vista with a new theme. Look up the Mojave experiment you fucking morons.

I only liked the WMP in Vista.
Windows 7's is pretty broken.
>>
>>52662030
no it wasn't, but the marketing for it was extremely bad.
>>
I liked the skin windows media player had
It was minimal and very sleek
