>>
2 years. Someone's working on it, I'm sure, it just needs time and saturation.
Even then it'll be pretty barebones. I think we won't get neural interfaces for decades yet, if ever in our lifetimes, but we are gonna get damn close to full body perfect immersion in the next few decades.

Think about where smartphones were ten years ago, and look at them now.

Bullshit. Neural interfaces are required and you said it yourself that they won't be here for decades (to be honest probably at least one century). The smartphone comparison is bad because that was nothing more than a simple increase in computer power and reduction in size. That has nothing to do with VR.

if you look at history with an open mind.

you will see many attempts in history to bring a specific product on the market. it were car engines, trains, cellphones, touchscreen while all were talked down in previous attempts because noone did it right and it simply sucked, look where we are now. apple made a featurephone with a touchscreen the most intuitive toy ever for example.

now it's vr again and the chance for it to take off is greater than ever, even if it is no true/full vr, but everything takes little steps to make the best imaginable thing, possible.

When home computers came out, everyone said it was a fad.

When cell phones came out, everyone thought they were stupid and unnecessary.

When internet came out, people laughed at it, and called it useless.

VR is exactly the same. All the stupid people with no foresight think its a gimmick or fad. But within a few decades, every house will have at least 1 VR headset.

It's literally going to be EVERYWHERE
>>
>>52638802

>>
Probably not any time soon. VR input occurs rapidly with people turning their necks. That combined with input from clicking stuff means games would be laggy and choppy as fuck running in real time, especially MMOs. Not to mention there'd be a call for improvements in graphics that'd be taxing on processing power since immersion in a world is different than looking at a screen. Most people will bitch about seeing pixels. So if you want to run through war craft in first person, that's probably not gonna happen. But turn based games online games will probably happen by the summer. That way only a small area has to be prerendered and you can look around in 360 from the spots the game lets you look from.

Are you joking?

Military sets up a VR space inside a huge warehouse, and can literally load up any virtual environment, with AI enemies.

The military personnel run around inside this VR space, employing tactics to overcome the AI.

They could literally load up an ACTUAL SCHEMATIC of a building they are about to do a raid on, so they can learn it inside out before going in.

This. The popularity of new technology follows this trend where if it offers more porn or makes it easier to get to porn it's going to succeed.
Cellphones gave way to mobile porn.
Videogames offered porn games.
Computers, well the Internet mostly, deprecated the porn magazine amd gave people porn at the tips of their fingers.
TV and Film gave us filmed porn so people didn't need to resort to magazines or live shows.
The car made it so people could go out and buy porn in far away places and not have to see people in their community or deal with the mailman shaking their "discrete" box and guessing what kind of dragon dildo was inside.

VR is worth investing in if only because it's literally a brand new porn market offering a new way to experience porn. Shits gonna sell like hotcakes 10 years down the line once manufacturing is cheap enough for the average Joe to own it.
Literally if you want to make the next big thing in tech, just think about if it revolutionizes how people get to porn or experience it.

>Improve the lives
My viewpoint of a 'good life' is a life in which someone is very happy, extremely often. Little to no suffering.

At the moment, you are correct. People still need to have jobs, and interact in society in some measure. As a result, watching a lot of porn severely damages the other elements of your life.

However, in the next 50 years, having a job is going to become entirely optional, as there simply wont be enough jobs for everyone.

Great little video on the topic;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pq-S557XQU

Anyway, once this happens, and people receive an pretty good allowance (and can work, if you want even more, but thats really not necessary), then people will be able to sustain happiness in their little introverted lives a lot more.

They can sit in their house, have their food delivered, and basically live in VR. And most importantly, they will be extremely happy.

I'm sure you think this is disgusting, with thoughts like "why would anyone want to live like that..."

But if people 100 years ago could see how YOU live now, they would think its disgusting. Sitting in front of a computer all day. Glued to your smartphone. Hardly socializing in the good ol way.

It's just the next step forward, and there's nothing wrong with it.

Also, may i add; these people wont be disgusting fat neckbeards. They'll have small, clean apartments. Look after themself well. Eat a healthy diet, and be in very good shape, due to all the exercise from VR.
>>
>>52639224
>It doesnt fuckin work man you need to get off the governments dick you tool
Thats not how you argue kiddo, you're meant to explain why i'm wrong. You cant, but good luck.

This is what people said about the internet. Your mind just isnt big enough.

>You what? What the hell are you talking about you Lebron James Xperience motherfucker
Google it. It's already happening, and people are paying good money to view it.

Basically you can watch live sporting events in VR, from a viewpoint on the sidelines.

You can be AT the sporting event, in teh best seat in the house, for less money than it costs to go there. All from the comfort of your home.

If you seriously dont see the appeal of this... you're pretty much Dassey.

Isn't Star Citizen basically an MMO?

Do you guys remember when many games started to come out with updated graphics, they would always have the suffix: 3D. I guess now tons of game are going to shamelessly advertise their VR capabilities. EverQuest patch #96 VR edition when?
>>
>>52639569
Star Citizen isnt designed for VR.

The locomotion is a typical videogame.

Piloting ships would be nice in VR, but the rest is meh.

As for being an MMO, i used to think it was too, but apparently its not. Don't know for sure.
>>
>>52639602
EVE Online could actually work really well as a VR only MMO.

You're permanently in a ship, and EVE Valkyrie would be a great stepping stone towards that.
>>
>>52639312
Are you just pretending to be retarded, SHILL?
>>
>>52639602

I thought one of Star Citizen's main features that they advertised in the Kickstarter was compatibility with VR, since it was just a few months after the Oculus campaign.
>>
In the spirit of the last two replies - last year, with the release of Elite: Dangerous. Same as above: the "sitting in a pilot seat" experience of space sims (or, I suppose flight sims?) makes for a more natural VR experience. I don't have VR myself, but lots of testers have, and I've tried it and it works very well: it's almost uncanny.

I find using traditional monitors and head tracking to be more personally comfortable when you get used to it, however. Too much immersion isn't always a good thing.

In a deeper spirit: who knows? Second Life is an abject failure, but I wonder what it would have been like with competent graphics, and VR. (Probably even more furries and weird porn, desu.)
>>
>>52639696
VR compatability is very different to being designed for VR.

Traditional videogames do not work well in VR, except for games where you're in a cockpit 24/7, such as racing games, flight sims, space games.

Star Citizen has a lot of walking around and FPS combat in large areas. Simply not a good VR experience.

It makes you motion sick. Your body is telling your brain that you're sitting down, while your eyes are telling your brain that you're running around.
>>
>>52639745
You can get rid of the motion sickness with enough 'training', at least it worked for me. Now I can play FPS like Halflife or TF2 for hours without getting sick (the weapons suck a lot though, they are awkwardly close)

Besides, plenty people who are not used to fast 3d games will get even sick from monitors, it's all about adaption.
>>
>>52639894
Oh definitely. But it's not as good of a VR experience as actually walking around.

I'll always prefer playing a game that allows me to ACTUALLY walk around in my room and the virtual world.
>>
Pretty hyped for vr boxing and sword fights.
>>
>>52639934
Yeah, but how do you want to realize this? It would only work with games which are either aware of your real world surroundings (which would limit the game a lot), or if you have plenty space so you don't keep bumping into things. It's just too easy to lose track of your position as it is right now.

Dunno how home VR wants to solve this, but I'm looking forward to a revival of arcades with nice parcours, like they got for laser tag or airsoft stuff.
>>
>>52640234
Vive has some good room scale solutions, and they're only getting better.

The main thing is the game design. Designing your game for a small space. Currently, teleporting seems to be a popular solution.

>>
>>52639272
You're deluded as fuck. Allow me to give you a reality check.

>My viewpoint of a 'good life' is a life in which someone is very happy, extremely often. Little to no suffering.
Fair enough, as long as that someone is truly not negatively affecting anyone else and is giving to society at least as much as he is taking from it.

>However, in the next 50 years, having a job is going to become entirely optional, as there simply wont be enough jobs for everyone.
I've watched that video many times before and here's why people will still need to work:
1. People need maintenance done on every robot
2. People need every robot to be assembled
3. Robots will inevitably need to be replaced in enough time

>They can sit in their house, have their food delivered, and basically live in VR. And most importantly, they will be extremely happy.
They will still need to work. Additionally, they still need friends/lovers.

>Also, may i add; these people wont be disgusting fat neckbeards. They'll have small, clean apartments. Look after themself well. Eat a healthy diet, and be in very good shape, due to all the exercise from VR.
How is VR going to give people good exercise? Moving their heads side to side rapidly?
>>
>>52641055
There will be repair bots, which repair other robots (including themselves).

>They will still need to work. Additionally, they still need friends/lovers.
Work where? There literally wont be enough jobs to keep half of the population employed.

Also, people will have friends/lovers in VR.

>How is VR going to give people good exercise?
The best VR experience is one where you're standing up, moving around a space. It's very good cardio exercise. People get exhausted after 30 minutes of play.
>>
>>52640366
also trying to play while preventing the cable for the headset from getting wrapped around you sounds pretty awful
>>
>>52641126
2nd generation headsets will not have cables.

As for the first gen headsets, most people say its a non-issue.
>>
>>52641120
>There will be repair bots, which repair other robots (including themselves).

you're talking about either technological progress grinding to a halt or a singularity happening
that's not likely within the next century or so
>>
>>52641055
This is a good point we will need a pulley system of some sort. Perhaps we could mount it to the ceiling?
>>
>>52641181
Yes, many people will still work.

Just because there are still SOME jobs, doesn't mean there's jobs for everyone.

Even IF all the robots needed repairs, you'd still only need like 1 person for... every 1000 robots. And each of those robots could have replaced 1 persons job. What do the other 999 people who no longer have jobs do?

>>
>>52641324
OSVR is rubbish. It's so far behind, not even worth paying attention to it.

Oculus is very closed i believe, but Palmer Lucky is just all about moving VR forward.

SteamVR is somewhat more open i think? The technology such as lighthouses are open to anyone to use. Oculus need to swallow their pride and implement it.

Within a few generations, standards will be formed. But they're all already very similar.

All the Oculus exclusive content will be playable on a Vive. It's just exclusive to the Oculus store (which can be used on a Vive).

the second post is who i meant to respond too with my first post.

but back to the main topic i think vrmmorpg's wont be a thing until there is a large enough market for it. I don't think that will be until at least 2018 considering a gtx 970 is the bare minimum for a decent vr experience. The mainstream will have to wait for a drop in price and that wont happen until the new cards are released.
>>
>>52641411
2018 is probably too early as well. I don't think we'll see mass consumer adoption for at least 5 years.

I think the main driving factor will be phone technology. When you can plugin your phone into something like cardboard, and have a comparable experience to what you can get on the Vive today. That's when it'll take off.
>>
>>52641120
>The best VR experience is one where you're standing up, moving around a space. It's very good cardio exercise. People get exhausted after 30 minutes of play.
Yeah, I'm sure everyone will willingly choose to play a game where they have to run around aimlessly. And in a "small apartment" as you said. People who use this shit will be lethargic neckbeards. Deal with it.
>>
>>52641549

the wii fit balance board, other than being shit, isnt even a related product. it was for a console aimed at children and its "games" were essentially all fitness videos. useful potential shit for non normies: virtual surgery, better cad rendering, idk some other science shit

use normie shit: muh games(already exist and fun), virtual deskptops(unlimited screen realestate, already exists just needs better resolution from cv1/future models), virtual facetime shit( exists in early beta, oculus toybox, theres other shit), theres other good shit out for normies, fuck you

its not that there arent "killer apps" its that the market of devkits is small and most normies arent following vr development.

the purpose is to make 3d programs suck less to interact with, a mouse and keyboard and 2d monitor suck for 3d interactions.

We mainly use vacuum cleaners for carpets. Floors are mopped and cleaned with a machine. You could automate that, but only for simple spaces with no furniture and other irregularities. Automating the cleaning of desks, chairs, handrails etc. and removing garbage would be far more difficult. There are a lot of things involved with cleaning that are very basic for humans but difficult for machines.

I've had an idea for a augmented VR game for a long time, it's basically highlander + wizards.

You go about your business, and then suddenly you are alerted that you are being drawn to a place or person. You cast spells by weaving your hands(like mouse gestures, except people will frown even more on your stupidity).

You could team up and fight NPC's, or other groups of wizards in the park, or wherever. Or you could fight your way to the top and become the Archmage of your city.

Imagine sitting in your office with your Goldman-Sachs GoyVR 2k1 glasses on, and suddenly your boss walks by in his wizard getup. Or turning your head on the subway and spotting an enemy wizard, are you autistic enough to start pretending to be a wizard in a public space, or do you just let it slide?

I want this so bad, i'll never have to fucking grow up. I don't care if my life ends because i ran into tracking trying to dodge a dragon breadth cone attack, i'll die happy!

The fact that first person MMO's are extremely rare even today is a worrying sign that VR-MMORPG's are still a long way off.

Rendering an interactive and realistic world around, realistic enough for first person, that you and other players can impact and change is a daunting and expensive thing to undertake.

You can call Destiny a first person MMO, but we all know it's not. They deifnitely wasted a quarter of their big ass budget, but still. It can't support more than 12-16 people in any of their tiny ass zones or hubs. You could call planetside an MMO, but it's not an RPG.

I'll start believing in the possibility of VR-MMORPG's in the near future when I see a First person MMORPG that looks at least as good as FO4 and can render 20 real people around me at an exceptable level of quality and realism.

>MFW reading all your plebeian posts arguing over if "VR will be the next thing," meanwhile a small army of artists, coders, industry leaders and fuckboy indie devs (myself included) are plotting to profit billions off you clueless Luddites in the next decade.

VR will be the next entertainment medium. Sony will launch PSVR this year to an install base of 30million+. They have 80+ games and experiences/apps lined up just for the launch. It will be the most sold-out, hot-off-the-shelf shit come Christmas. As for the other headsets, ha ha ha. I'll be playing with my Rift CV1 in March while some people wait until August, that is how back-ordered it is. The Vive will be a worse wait since HTC hasn't even started producing the thing (and most expensive, be sure of that you hold-offers thinking HTC will undercut Oculus lmfaooo).

>But anon I am too poorfag to get VR!! Its gimmicky! It made me sick when I tried google cardboard with my iPhone 4s!

Then just fucking sit by and wait you broke neet fuck. Its not even expensive for the Last Entertainment Medium. Its a fucking reality generator and people are crying about the (low) price of entry. The high-end headsets DO induce presence, which is the whole point of VR. That is what we're going for. Forgetting you are wearing a VR headset in the moment. That is what the CV1/Vive Pre has achieved.

It will be used for everything anon's said in this thread, but mostly porn.
Every sector can save tons of money by simply using VR shit in their pipeline. Archviz, medical, travel, business, design, training, NASA, schools, you name it.

Sure, VR's penetration this year will be mostly to people who actually plan then do things in their life and actually give a shit about taking advantage of opportunities unlike many humans get to see in their entire lifetimes, but once the second generation, 4k+ res, foveated rendering/lightfield headsets come out you can bet your fucking ass you will see nearly every schmuck wearing one.

I actually think improving multiplayer VR apps and virtual streams (you need stupid bitrates for live sporting events in VR, lets not even get into Lightfield file sizes...) will be one of the main driving forces for network infrastructure upgrades.

A VR MMO would need some really-fucking-good Internets and major stability. Disconnects/Lag in VR are a big no-no.

>>
>>52655618
People lag and disconnect in mmo's and normal games all the time, they just have to make it good enough to the point where it's acceptable.

How do you think people are going to log out in VR...?

They need server infrastructure good enough to render a detailed world and hundreds of character models in the same server at once. I'm sure we'll get there, it's just a matter of how long it takes until it becomes cheap enough to actually consider developing, and internet speeds are fast and cheap enough for there to be a large market worth capitalizing on.
>>

>>
>>52655659
Whatever floats your boat, you don't have to buy it, just like you don't have to participate in Facebook. Does not stop it from existing. The fact Oculus is owned by FB will mean your feed will slowly be consumed and steered towards full-360 degree content and eventually, vr experiences and "clips."

Soon all this data will be harvested to ever more perfect the skinner box they have created.

Of course VR will be used for shit and evil tactics and stupid candy crush games and farmville, but as any technology the propensity for good and awesome experiences is just as great as the negative side.

For every app you hate you will have one that you'll find compelling. Personally I'm not down with the social shit either, but I do really enjoy having my own personal movie theater. Once I have a light enough headset (CV1) it will really have diminished the feeling of going to the movies to a "why would I do this anymore, lol" feeling.

I am excited for VR because of that top 5% of content, the content that makes me go "wow, this is something I thought impossible." I want the HL2 of VR, an epic story with new mechanics and new ideas. This technology makes those types of ideas not only possible, but likely. It is just another stepping stone to get closer to the mind's eye, man. Besides, what else is there other than that primal essence of creation VR is all about? /evangelizing

It's not even just that. For many VR interactions, you really need low latency. Take Ping Pong for example, even a bit of latency will affect your performance. Same for music. There are a lot of interactions that would fail without low latency.

And you need quality. If the information being sent over isn't really accurate, the illusion of VR can fall apart. In Toybox for example, you can't just use any audio format. You need one that saves space at the same time as maintaining sound fidelity - mostly in the high frequencies, which aid in spatialization. Without that, it won't feel like you're hearing someone that's in the same space as you. And then let's take facial expressions and movements. If you can't get that to a high enough fidelity, it'll get into the uncanny value. There's a lot more data to transmit now because the standards are so high, and you need it to be scalable.
>>
>>52636938
Hopefully soon, it'll eliminate a lot of competition for me in the labour market.
>>
>>52655840
Yeah its gonna be a nightmare transmitting not only your character's position, but your fucking hand positions, your fingers, your whole damn body. Spatial voice information/sound information from reflections on every piece of geometry to be accurate. On top of what shit you're doing if its gesture controlled. I can only begin to imagine what a nightmare it would be to code up something robust enough to handle the eventual millions (tens of millions?) of users. I don't think the hardware to acquire all of the vectors of information for a good VRMMO will be around in the average joe's hands until generation 2 or 3 of hardware anyways. We're still a good half decade off the first great VRMMO if you ask me.
>>
>>52655768
>I want the HL2 of VR, an epic story with new mechanics and new ideas.
HL2 had virtually no story, just a series of rooms with silent protagonist. The creators of the game gave up on making any more of that crap, literally.

Agreed pretty much.

With that said, once it does eventually happen, it will be glorious.

In the meantime, the birth of VR is still pretty fun even if you can't achieve the holy grail. I'm having tons of fun already on muh Gear VR and I'll have fun on the Vive and Rift when they come out.

Now if you excuse me, I have 2 exams to go to today on my journey to researching the brain.
>>
>>52655840
yeah, pretty much. I'm sure a good chunk of calculation and rendering can be handled by the user's system with the advances that are being toted about the new generation of graphics cards, but it really all falls down to server infrastructure and internet quality. They'll find a way to make it work, it just probably won't make an appearance until enough of the prospective market has the processing power and internet quality to justify the costs.

Not everyone can put down $600 on the thing, and most users, even now, don't like the idea of paying more than $60-65 (tax) up front for a game, yet continue to complain about DLC and microtransactions. I'd gladly pay $100-120 for a full game at release if it was good and full of content, but most wouldn't.

Hell, if we had statewide google fiber to every house and servers for every 50, 100, 200 something mile radius, we could just stream the fucking gameplay and cut out the average user's system entirely. It'd just cost too much right now.

It'd be a more exciting and enjoyable life than my mundane college life of homework late into the night and exams, to be followed by 40+ years 9-5 office life and financial troubles.

I'd rather die pumped full of adrenaline doing what I love, than live out a life of mundane repetition for our corporate overlords.

What you youngfags don't realise is, VR has been here before and failed then too. The first VR boom was 1991-1995, everyone expected it to take over the world then, and it didn't. It'll be the same this time.

VR is to gaming, what 3D is to the movie industry. They'll just wheel it out every 20-30 years when they need more money, and it'll quietly vanish again.

Dickheads like this unironically believe that entire offices will be sitting there with VR head sets on in companies all over the world, not speaking to each other and looking around their virtual spaces... KEKEKKEKEKEK!

>It'll be the same this time.

It's absolutely different this time. VR was extremely low res, bulky, expensive and unsupported by developers in the 90s. The current batch of VR hardware is driven by the smartphone revolution and the screens, accelerometers, gyroscopes are all cheaply available thanks to smartphones. Mobile phones were barely even a thing last time, so manufacturers had to invent technology that has been perfected over the past decade. Hundreds of thousands of developers already have Oculus SDKs and 80 games are slated for release this year, including titles from major studios like Ubisoft. VR is already unofficially supported in AAA games like Dying Light and Alien Isolation. Every aspect of VR's release this time is different.

Then you were paying much attention, 3DTV was probably the most hyped tech product in 2010/11, just look at CES that year, it was 90% about 3dTVs.
>>
>>52665756

Not really, it has much more in common with early 90s VR than you realise. Sure the graphics are sharper and the headsets a bit lighter, but it still has the same fundamental problems, and it will fail for many of the same reasons.

Ok then, state your case instead of using unarguable ambiguous hand-waves like 'than you realise' or 'same fundamental problems' without specifying any of them
