Hey guys I have a problem with ALSA on debian.
- Root has sound
- User doesn't have sound (permission denied)
- Adding user to audio group and resigning in does nothing
- chmod -R r+w /dev/snd/* gives user (incomplete) sound
- Sound is locked by the current used application (you have sound on steam but no sound on the browser when you alt tab out, to get sound in the browser you ahve to close steam)
- Rebooting doesn't preserve this file permission change

Also you should be using pulseaudio.

What a strange problem
A common problem is that it is muted. For some reason alsa loves muting by default unless it has a special install. Open 'alsamixer' and make sure it's not muted. Using pulseaudio is a pain BTW

try adding your username to audio group. then logout and login again.
sudo usermod -a -G audio LOGIN
Add your user to the audio group.

install "alsa-utils" and see if you have anything muted with "alsamixer"
