HD 800 measured using my measurement rig 2.0 with artificial ears and some ear-canal volume. Getting consistent results, too. I noticed that the insertion depth of the measurement mic in the ear canal has a relatively large impact on the response. I'm not sure about the large dips present in the high frequencies. Some of them went away with different insertion depth/adjustment of the headphone on the coupler but some persisted.

Here's a REW measurement data file for analysis if someone is interested:

How are those bose? I figured the headphones are shit but are their in ears good?
>>
>>52619409
I love them, usually only use them for sport.
Very comfy and they sit ultra thight, I can do sprints with them without them popping out.
Sound is fine, bass could actually be higher which is funny considering they are bose and they are a lil bit too quiet on my mp3 player but still loud enough.

People usually shit on bose and for a good reason but I still believe those inears are fine.
>>
>>52619488
I think for any iem that will be used on the go is required to have a good bass response, specially in noisy environments. That soft rubber looks comfy, is it attached to the ear tip?
>>
>>52619537
the whole rubber part is removable.

I need to upgrade form my ath-m50, but I can only spend 120 dollars on it. Preferably something with open ear.

What do I buy, and how do I get it cheap enough?
>>
>>52619665
>upgrade
It depends on what you are looking for. What sounds sig are you looking for? Many of the open backs in that price range are not going to have the bloated bass the ATH-M50s have. If you are accustomed to the V shaped response of the M50s a flat response might be disappointing.
>>
>>52619375
What does it look like now? Where is the microphone now relative to the entrance?

>I noticed that the insertion depth of the measurement mic in the ear canal has a relatively large impact on the response
Canal resonance is a huge part of the normal ear's gain response.
>Some of them went away with different insertion depth/adjustment of the headphone on the coupler but some persisted.
Some of those are natural properties of the ear. Pinna/concha has natural cancellation effect in high frequency.

Just for reference, here is the new measurement using the external ears vs the old one with essentially a flat plate with a flush mounted mic. Ear resonance is quite massive.

I still don't get where that really uneven and inconsistent upper midrange came from in the plate measurements.

>>52619918
Mic is about 1.5 to 2cm down in the canal which is about as far as I can get it using these ears.

A small gallery of how it looks like:

where you going to get the headphones to do large number of measurements?
you work in a store or some shit?
>>
>>52620668
I own them but I could grab some stuff from friends and even work to measure. Mostly just terrible stuff though. I also know a few salesmen in a nearby store who sell Hi-Fi. I might be able to persuade them to give me some pairs to loan even if just for an hour or two to make measurements. The M50X was not mine anymore. I really didn't enjoy it and sold it to a buddy who seems to enjoy it loads.
>>
>>52620522
>Ear resonance is quite massive.
It's normally quite huge, but maybe your canal is slightly short?
>Frequency = Speed of sound / (tube length*4)
>343m/s / (4*.02 m) ~ 4300 Hz
Quarter wave resonator, hence the 4, and it also has peaks at odd number multiples.

Canal frequency is around 2-7-3.0 kHz. Although the graph doesn't look that far off from those expensive dummy heads otherwise.
Can you measure the HD 650 and HE-500, I might like more data.
>>
>>52621046
>maybe your canal is slightly short?
Likely is. I'll have to figure out a way to mount the mic with good seal further away from the ear canal entrance.

I'll measure the HD 650 and HE-500 next.

I'd like to do a diffuse field compensation for these graphs but can't seem to find a way to do it in REW. Any ideas?

HE-500 and HD 650 here.

https://a.uguu.se/mxrjfj_HD650HE500.mdat

There is a clear correlation between the differences in channel specific measurements here. I just couldn't get them to match properly. I took roughly ten measurements a channel per headphone. It's hard to judge channel imbalance with this kind of a difference between channels most likely caused by measurement gear.

The PS4 has a 4-pole 3.5mm jack, right?
If so, HyperX Cloud and shut the fuck up, it comes with a dual 3.5mm to single 4-pole adapter.

The Cloud II has a 4-pole jack connector as standard instead of dual 3.5mm, but it's $30 more expensive and comes with a shitty USB sound card for your PC.
I'd say grab the Cloud I and spend the extra $30 on HM5 pads instead for maximum comfy.

>Possibly the ears?
Possibly those yes. Although the LF difference puzzles me. It's similar on both headphones yet ears shouldn't really have an effect on it as far as I know. Not like that at least. It resembles a leakage problem the most but then again with the amount of different positions I tried there should've been at least one measurement which didn't have significant leak.

>Also, thanks for the measurement fun. Why did you decide to make a measurement jig anyway?
Np. I was just curious. I wanted to measure my headphones as I've been staring at graphs for a good two years now without any personal experience. I also wanted that mic for room response correction for my loudspeakers.

How do the HD 598 compare to the HD 558? I've read that they have both more and less bass and more and less highs, which is the kind of subjective nonsense that makes me start to grit my teeth.

>>52624627

Why? Are there any comparatively priced open, over the ear headphones that are on the warm and bassy side of neutral?

Googling around turned up a bunch of V shaped and treble forward alternatives, which would not be to my taste.
>>
>>52625081

The 558 is great for its price and I can definitely recommend it. From what I've heard, the 598 has the same driver and is basically the same headphone but with a better build quality and different color. The 558 is solid and very comfortable though. Don't forget to do the foam mod on it though, gives it a more airy, open sound

Used a camera on a stick to check inside my ear canal. Once she realized my entire eardrum was protected by a wall of wax she attempted to get it out with a thin metal stick. When that didn't work she used some sort of spray to soften it up and a thin pipe connected to a vacuum to suck it up. If your ears are really fucked up they use a hose to spray water and clean it up. Apparently that hurts like a bitch so you better hope it works before that.
Hurt a bit and my head felt dizzy most of the day but I can hear much better now.
I'd recommend getting checked even if you're not experiencing any problems as wax builds up naturally and blocks your eardrums.
Don't wait until you go deaf like I did.

They look into your canal with a special ear-magnifying glass thing. If they can, they will clean it out with a curette which is a long metal rod with a loop on the end to grab the wax. If that isn't sufficient, they will load up a plunger with warm water and jet it into your ear, which is oddly pleasurable. Overall, it's a painless process and takes under 30 minutes.

You literally have to be born deformed, premature or carry a genetic mutation for this to occur. Normal people never need to clean their ear canal the wax travels out by itself.

You should probably get your XB fixed. Nothing in the 80$ range will come even close to that, and for EDM you don't fucking want neutral sound.
Not sure about the XB500 in particular but pretty much any headphone above 100$ from a respectable brand is made to be fixable. They're not disposable headphones.

Using AKG k612 with my HTC One M8 (Not the greatest setup in the world), but I notice even with my little fiio amp some songs just are not very loud even on max volume. Is this something to do with the DAC in my phone? Are there better phones to play music with out there?

I guess really have to look into getting it fix.I was just wonder/hoping there would be something around the price range that i had previously bought my headphones with possibly better specs(since i really dont know much about headphones). And i didn't want to feel like i was cheated or anything.

HTC along with Samsung make some of the best DACs on Android phones. Apple DACs are fine too.
If you're having troubles driving your headphones on an M8 along with an amp either something is broken in that setup or you're attempting to reach ear raping levels.

>>
>>52627327
Looks like bluetooth is still bad for audio unfortunately. In order to send the signal over the allotted bandwidth/frequency it needs to compress the audio.
For swimming in particular it may not be a big deal with all the background noise you'll have but then you have to worry about signal loss if you're doing laps or something.
If you really want a waterproof Bluetooth pair you should start from there because you may not have much to choose from.

Open heapdhones usually have velour pads and they're better than closed headphones. Avoid headsets (headphones + mic) and buy separate headphones and mic. Since you're thinking about upgrading your setup with a DAC/amp in the future, I'd recommend to get a K612/K702 and get a V-moda boom pro or a Antlion Modmic.

As long as it doesn't sound like garbage. I don't know anything about music and stuff, so just as long as it sounds good.

Garbage skullcandy and other cheap brands.

Thanks all

this is really important though, do you like bass, do you like highs

if you don't like bass (which I doubt, as you buy gamer headsets and such)
Get an MDR 7506 or m40x

what's the absolute maximum you're willing to spend?
>>
>>52631390
So I know what bass is, but what are highs?

Max would be like $200, but those have got to be like amazing. Like sex in my ears good.
>>
>>52631418
highs are treble, you know, high pitched stuff
If you like bass, I'd definitely recommend dt770 pro 80 ohm

I just bought the hyperx cloud literally a minute ago man. It's cheaper than headphones and I only play games anyway. Please tell me I did good.
>>
>>52632047
well theyre the best headset you can get. but still theyre pretty shit
>>
>>52632047
they're shit but they're the type of shit that has some pieces of candy in it

if you wanted to be a cheapfag, you could get a 30$ pair of headphones like HD681 and it'd be as good if not better
>>
>>52632047
If you wanted a headphone just for gaming, you couldn't do better, but remember that it's still inferior to good stereo headphones.

I was using the hyperx cloud after my dt 770 broke. It was okay. My brother just lent me his mdr7506, which I've never used before, and they sound pretty similar, maybe people who know better will disagree. The cloud is definitely heavier and less comfortable though.

Over ear, want to try open for the first time (not playing games that much anymore, but heard open keeps your ears cooler than closed), Definitely want a detachable cable because that's how I fucked up my last pair
>Comfort level
MAX, willing to sacrifice for sound quality.
>tonal balance
Neutral I guess, with good bass but not necessarily dt series bass
>music
electronic music, ambient electronic music, rock

dt 770 were the most best ones I've used

I don't know how much I'd willing to spend right now, and I've been thinking about a lot of different models but I just can't commit to anything.

I was interested in the dt 880, but I want to try something a little more different than the 770 and with a detachable cable. Looked at the HD 598 and then read somewhere it's similar to the 558? but both might lack bass I'm looking for.
Then I started looking at some of hifiman's planar magnetic stuff like the HE-400 which supposedly has great bass and it's neutral, but they're kind of uncomfortable and heavy? Then there's a fidelio X2 on massdrop which is ending soon, don't know much about it though. Don't know what to do. Should I just get off my ass and go to music stores and listen to headphones?

TL;DR halp
>>
>>52632635
HD650. If you want maximum comfy, Sony MDR-1A.
Also, get your ass off. Its always worth to audition the headphones compared just to see graph or listen to some recommendation.
>>
>>52632604
But the hd681 is fucking ugly.
>>
>>52632635
ma900, lightweight, big earcups and angled drivers (so you get more room for your ears in the back, if that's important).
Might be to much bass drop off for you.

K612 or M50X? Or is there something better around 150 bucks? I have a fiio e10k if that helps the choice.

Also my dad died last week and I'm dealing with it by buying a pair of headphones.

Don't care. I'd rather have build quality.

Looking for any good recommendations. I'm already torn between DT880, K702, HD558 and ATH AD700X/AD900X. I don't have the posibility to hunt for them in shops so I am really hoping you guys can help.

Also specify if I need an amp to drive them / recommend one. I'm open to something low effort an amp+dac combo like the e10k. I don't have the ear or the knowledge to bother with the expensive stuff. I just need a good pair of open headphones that I can drive from my laptop first (and at least to a listenable level from my smartphone).
