What /g/ memes have you fallen for lads?
I bought an SSD a week ago and literally havnt noticed a single thing. $150 down the fucking drain.

Last time I ever listin to /g/ about anything
>>
>>52582255
You have to install it too. Buying it isn't enough.
>>
At my workplace all the laptops are slow as fuck (5 minutes boot time), when you replace the HDD with an SSD, they boot up in 20 seconds.

SSD is probably the only thing on /g/ that isn't a meme
>>
>>52582255
Its because you're a fucking idiot who has no idea what he's talking about if he believes SSDs don't offer an improvement.

>tfw fell for the "SSD's are a meme" meme

waited 2 years to buy one, cant believe how much better they are.

download AS SSD and run it and see the speeds.
If they are very far off from the advertised speeds then you likely didn't install it correctly via BIOS, etc settings.

If it's working as intended then you simply don't do another IO bottlenecked operations to even notice and wasted your money.

The linux meme

Do you mean the gentoo meme?
>>
Not OP here.
Isn't the main problem for OP is that he didn't move his OS and other important files to the SSD. So he has no reason to notice an increase.

I literally refuse to use a computer with a HDD.

>>
>>52582449
>have to learn an entire OS from scratch
Jumping from one windows version to the next is about as disruptive but people seem to manage.
There are DE's which work the same as windows, installing something else would be because you want something
>have to do everything from scratch
Like what? find a new set of applications?
You have to do that on windows as well.
Nothing is eternal.
>have to look up every obscure issue for every hardware ever
Only the hardware you own and most things just work.
>actually have to study a serious issue if I wsnt to fix it or live with a bug
It is usually faster to fix something yourself than wait for someone else to notice it.
>>

Yeah, I'm glad I only spent $80 on mine. It's still literally the most expensive thing in my computer. Sucks because I could've gotten 3TB for that much and I need the space.
>>
>>52582641
You're not going to sell me on the LInux meme

I can just use Win 7 and call it a day and have guaranteed support from the hardware to drivers to software

With linux, I have a bunch of college students googling for the same things I am

SSDs were deprecated the moment sleep states were invented.

I bet op bought the ssd and then didn't install his OS on the ssd drive, so it's literally being wasted right now.

>mfw he is so retarded he though he could just plug it in like an expansion card
>>
>>52582796
What advantage is there? The state of all loaded applications is saved when the system is suspended. You're better off spending your money on more RAM.
>>
>>52582837
a) hugely better access times
b) better speeds
c) lower power draw
d) not vulnerable to drops and shakes (good for laptops)

Also, I don't know about you, but I don't keep all the programs I'll ever run open at once

They're good for laptops because those hard drives suck. They're a meme for desktops.

Some gayms, yes, but not many and I don't count them as "programs"
>>
>>52583149
>CPU multithreading is random I/O
Individual threads have different data requirements for their workload...

Every input, keystroke, mouse click, everything, all has a data request. Most of that data is cached in L1/2/3. Any time there's a cache miss, the cache has to be flushed and filled.

That said, any time an application is launched, or a new page loaded, there is an IO request for data. Not all of that data lives in RAM.

I didn't say that. The implication was that only gaymers could be that dumb. You wouldn't store entire applications on a ramdisk, only data that is frequently accessed by those applications.

SSDs are great for laptops, but i realized any perceived speed increase in my desktop was most likely a placebo after about a week when the "i spent money so now i have to convince myself i like it" effect wore off
>>
>>52583448
Literally turn off updates at install, that's it. No more win10.
Also what fucking advertisements?
I mean, if you're gonna shit on wangblows (rightfully so) at least do it properly.
>>
>>52583448
Windows 7 doesn't have advertisements, 10 does. You got your memes confused there, buddy. :)
>>
>>52583570
7 advertises for 10. 10 advertises for other stuff.
Who cares anymore.

On linux I can remove something I don't like with a single command, on windows you have to read long guides of how to do simple things and navigate through complicated interfaces where they purposely hide the options they don't need.
>>
>>52583631

No, I want to use Mint

>>
My Linux machine starts up faster than my graphics driver kicks in. I can actually start typing in my password before my monitor turns on.

I realize having an SSD for Linux is a bit overkill but I was using Windows originally and I noticed a massive improvement in boot times and application launches.

I'd recommend them.

I have a "shit tier" Kingston SSDNow V300 too so it's not like I'm using something terribly expensive.
>>
So what's the best read speed for the price right now?
Or do you look for the fastest cutting edge one there is?
>>
>>52583442
>>Shit now boots up in a few seconds vs 45 seconds.
My XPS 8500 in the other room boots in 17 seconds off a 100MB/s 500GB hard drive. You're doing something wrong.
>>
>>52583738
I wouldn't do this with a single command, but you can just install your replacement, remove systemd, update initramfs, enable the services you had on systemd and then reboot.

I have no way to test this as I don't have mint installed and without looking at any sources I can't get you the exact names of the packages you need.

And as for breaking something?
If you enable everything, it should work.

I don't think the old init systems have a migration tool for systemd

This
I installed a SSD in my dad's Thinkpad. Boots are noticeably faster and AOL comes up much quicker.
Bought a SSD for my desktop. Boots actually increased by a second.from my short-stroked, tweaked install. Noticed no difference except for the loading of GIMP and PS, and even that disappeared once I tested them on a new 200MB/s hard drive instead of one from 2006.

SSDs are a meme for desktop use if you have Common Sense 2016 installed. If you're loaded with keyloggers, well, you might want a SSD.
