that's how I discovered all kinds of stuff like Isao Tomita, 808 State, or Teena Marie. If the net is good for one thing, it's definitely good for music
used to go to mp3 download sites, downloading random albums from torrents. Then moved on to youtube, finally listening mostly to background tracks from videos and videogame soundtracks

I browse through the music categories of torrent sites once or twice a month, I try out the first 5 albums I don't have yet in the first hundred. I download a few albums of artists that I liked.
Browsing Bandcamp, Discogs and such for similar music genres and artists already known to me.

Also my favourite producers (arguably the best in their genre) own three different record labels now host a weekly radio podcast, so that's a great way of discovering new stuff.
