Considering USB 3.0 availability and large Thumb Drives, I am considering going usb boot only but I want to hear your opinion, my computer usage is mostly spread sheet, baby's first programming, music, lurking and 1080p movies, zero gaymen.

i've been running my file server off of a usb stick since november. it's on win7. it's an old hp mediasmart server ex485 that i upgraded to an intel q9550s. this is strictly a plex server though, so there are no issues. when it comes to actually using it like a normal pc, there are issues. it will hang. and crash. often. but maybe that's just my current setup. it's possible someone else can run theirs just fine.
also, why use a normal usb stick when there are ssds that connect via usb? look for a company called visiontek and look for usb ssd. that should be much better than a normal usb stick.

i've been booting linux from a sandisk ultra fit 64gb for about 6 months. perfectly usable and the speed is almost identical to that of eMMC (nowhere near SSD speed but perfectly usable)
i use my laptop for taking notes and web browsing, if you're doing anything disk-intensive i probably wouldn't bother, but it works fine for me and i can boot pretty fast to boot

Usb stick is not a ssd
stick will shit itself very quickly if you use it like a hard drive.
if you want to do it anyway, make frequent images so that you can restore to a fresh stick.
