Yes, I have a smartphone. And I fucking hate having to dig it out of my pocket, take off my glove and mess with the screen to skip a track.
Would consider a 4th gen ipod shuffle, but the clickwheel is somewhat touchy + itunes sucks monkeyballs.
I even dug out my noname 2gb mp3 player that I had back in 2007, but shit's broken. pic related

I've used it for years. Buttons are big enough to use with gloves, and you can sort music in folders. No software necessary.

I had a Sansa Fuze for years. Great player. I liked the sound a lot and it was easy to use through a pocket. I think they still make products.
Till you decide on one, you could try something like "Pocket Skip Track" or an xposed module if you're not on lollypop.
I would guess some players have that inbuilt as long as the screen is not off.

This is good. I'm using it currently in Ottawa winter and its not bad. If your gloves are bulky it might be tricky. Also the library sorts numbers weird. Pic related. It sees 10 as lower than 2. (Hurr binary joke)

The button is about as wide as my finger, but it is thinner, for obvious reasons.
Personally I don't see you having a a problem with it, I've used it with gardening gloves on and it worked fine.
