My Logitech 5.1 setup of about 4 years is slowly dying and i've got a pair of Sennheiser 598's coming in the mail in a few weeks.

i'm undecided on whether to buy a smaller 2.1 setup for movies and music or just go balls deep and go for the 5.1 despite having headphones around this time.

Those JBL powered monitors are around that range and pretty nice.
It'd be a bit of a pain if you wanted to expand to 5.1 though.

5.1 sucks for wiring and clutter.

IMO you're probably not going to get a good 2.1 configuration for $350 unless you build the cabinets yourself and go DIY.

I'd probably go with a nice set of monitors and then add the subwoofer later on when your budget allows (if you still think you need it). Mackie MR5 or Yamaha HS5 are good options IMO.

Sound quality wise, is there are huge gap between 5.1 w/ subwoofer setup and powered monitors?
Aesthetics wise, monitors are great

I have a yamaha AV receiver and I hooked up some big front speakers from a sony stereo and some small pioneer surrounds to it. I mostly use it on stereo mode even when I watch movies. Because I rarely download 5.1 channel movies.

I also have a powered subwoofer hooked up to it too but I find front speakers has enough bass so I usually don't turn on the subwoofer too.

I recommend getting some good AV receiver and hook it up via optical or HDMI then add 5 good quality speakers. Then decide if you want to get a subwoofer too.

I have 2.0, 4.1 and 2.1 creative speakers. I dislike most of the "computer speakers" they are cheap but they are crap.

if you want quality make sure your source is good as your speakers and receiver too.

There are plenty of decent options out there, but any of these would be good.

Best deals are on local used equipment. I picked up a Rotel amp and NHT sub/bookshelves for $100 total.

Thanks for the info, can I ask if I REALLY need an amp/receiver for a PC setup?

>Audiophiles may like 80's retro hugeass speakers, but for regular home use you don't need to spend a lot of money.

I was convinced on the Mackie MR5 Mk3 until I read that on the wiki. I'm also paranoid they'll tell me theres only 1 speaker per box LOL
