Misnomers that ruin your dignity and rep amongst non-retards:

>calling a graphics card "a GPU"
>calling a USB stick "a USB"
>>
"Your cousin just got a job in computers."

>call center selling viagra
>>
>>52493363
what's wrong with calling it a GPU?
>>
>>52493516

There is nothing wrong with that. Also, a USB stick is still a universal serial bus regardless of the shape
>>
>>52493363

Why are you against saying GPU?
>>
Can you imagine talking to someone who has a PhD in English literature? Like, I'm sure they're very smart and cultured, but can they do anything other than reading books and talking to people?

>>
>>52493676

You realize that many people in management -- all they do is read materials and then talk to people?
>>
>>52493676
They're professors...
>>
>>52493516
Graphics processing unit != graphics card
>>
>>52493676

...of course they can, what are you talking about?

Don't let STEM STEM STEM get to your head. There are entire museums that need to be run, research that needs to done, investigations that need to be done, organization, taxonomically classifying writing, teaching, maintaining archives, spreading the importance of literature in accessible ways (very hard to do), etc. etc.

Do you really, really think someone with a Ph.D in English Literature only knows about 'reading books and talking to people'?

I am a STEM person myself but this is why the "STEM ONLY, STEM STEM STEM" attitude is becoming a parody. If you are actually in/from a STEM major you will understand why many MANY STEM people are absolutely incompetent at anything that doesn't directly involve technical things.
>>
>>52493735

Yes but when people say 'GPU' they usually actually ARE talking about the GPU, just like when they say CPU they aren't talking about the motherboard, they are talking about the CPU.

Having a PhD != being a professor

My middle school art teacher was a fat woman in her 40s with a PhD in art. She constantly belittled us, and one day some brat actually sued her lmao.
>>
>>52493767
How do you get belittled by a middle school art teacher? Color with crayola wrong?
>>
>>52493767
Well that's pretty sad. There was a PhD who taught Chemistry at my HS as I now recall.
>>
>>52493742
CS Major here. Completely agree. The only caveat is that you need to be god mode at a top tier university to pursue a meaningful career in liberal arts 90% of the time.
>>
>>52493767

She was probobly bitter because contrary to what people say these days: having a Ph.D in 'art' (not a thing, I'm sure it was specialized) can lead to some very cool/lucrative/stable positions.

Middle school art teacher isn't one of them (though my art teachers were always cool even though I suck at art and had nothing to do with art in school. They seemed to like their gig.)

Everything, because a graphics card is NOT a GPU. The level of widespread mental retardation amongs all those unaware of this is both saddening and alarming.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU_%28disambiguation%29
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_processing_unit
>"GPU" redirects here.
>Not to be confused with Graphics card.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_card#Parts
>Parts
>A modern video card consists of a printed circuit board on which the components are mounted. These include:
>Graphics Processing Unit
>A graphics processing unit (GPU), also occasionally called visual processing unit (VPU), is a specialized electronic circuit designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory to accelerate the building of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display. Because of the large degree of programmable computational complexity for such a task, a modern video card is also a computer unto itself.

Spot on anon. As a CS major I think an arts degree is just as valuable as my degree. Society needs artists, yet for some reason we discourage it by pushing the STEM idea
>>
>>52493866

Right, but when people say 'GTX 900 GPU' for example they are correct in what they are saying. That's what I mean.
>>
>>52493529
>Wikipedia explicitly prompts not to confuse "GPU" with "Graphics card" because they mean different things
>retarded anon claims to know better

Do you also call a car "engine"? Because that's the exact logical equivalent of calling a graphics card "GPU".
>>
>>52493920

People refer to cars by their engines all the time, it's the same thing.
>>
>>52493984

An even better, related analogy: people refer to engines by their displacement/cylinder count all the time as well.
