I did in my laptop back when I went to college. This was back right before the Core chips hit and fixed most things wrong with low and midrange laptops. It was a hot piece of shit that cooked the battery to death.

Because I prefer my heaters to be at least relatively efficient. P4 is the classic "what went wrong", which let AMD take the crown with the Athlon 64 - I actually do still have one of those running (well, an Opteron at least).
Intel started trying again with the Core, and by the time the Core 2 came out it was decent competition. AMD's Phenom was a failure by comparison, and Intel got better and better and AMD, well, didn't.
Now Intel own the high-end market and are exploiting it with good old fashioned price-fixing, AMD are relatively inefficient but reasonable choices for poorfags, and consoles/APUs, and we're all kind of vaguely hoping Zen is as good as it ought to be so we have some competition in the CPU arena again, the performance goes forward and prices come back down.
