Just got google cardboard and have literally been laying in bed for 4 hours with a pillow over my head watching youtube steroscopic videos of oculus games.

can someone please redpill me on the cheapest machine build for basic requirements? I just want to play HL2 in VR dudes.
>>
>>52477761
well you can get a used note 4 and GearVR
>>
>>52477761
No idea if it works

Isn't it possible to play thought steam sharing the screen with the mobile phone?
>>

>have literally been laying in bed for 4 hours with a pillow over my head

The autism reached whole new levels: fags with contraptions on their heads, sensorily separated from their surroundings entirely for hours on end.
>>
>>52477761
>cardboard
Tfw they start making all kinds of shit out of cardboard now instead of even plastic (let alone wood or metal), and sheeplets will still buy it.
>>
>>52482928

it was 15 dollars. most of the cost goes towards the lenses

why dont u calm down poorfaggot
>>
>>52477761
they keep saying GTX 970 is the bare minimum but honestly a 960 will do just fine if you lower graphical settings and don't output video to monitor
>>
>>52483056
>15 dollars
You could of got one for $1.25 on ali express.
>>
>>52483210
What are you in Poland?

Here everything below $20 counts as the same price
>>
Anyone tried it with killing floor?

>>
>>52483281

>>
>>52483112
i5 4590, GTX 970, with 8GB RAM is recommended, not minimum.
>>
Does anyone have links to a web-based view into the oculus store / oculus movies / play VR / whatever ?

I'm buying a phone and I kind of want a GN5 + Gear VR, but I'd like to see what's available first. When I google I seem to come up with either faqs or reviews, but not a list of the things I can actually purchase if I buy the premise.
>>
>Google is actually producing APIs geared specifically towards apps that involve putting a smartphone at the back of a box with two eye holes

Wowza...
>>
So, what's a decent version of cardboard I can buy for myself?
Tried a 18 dollar plastic one for my phone, caused me eye strain, and the phone was far away, and didn't cover whole field.
>>
>>52485078
Just get the viewmaster from target
>>
>>52485243
close but no head band for it which kind of ruins it
>>

Eh, I could make one.
What about the Freefly?
I've heard lots of good things about it.
No magnet button, but the bluetooth controller can do the same thing, right?
>>
>>52485316
Well, I just looked up the viewmaster.
Very funny.
>>
>>52485338
It's got the reels and everything.
>>
>>52485407
Well, I'm getting a freefly, it's only 50 dollars on ebay.
>>
>>52479836
Think note 5 or s6 and gear vr would be cheaper since the note 4 one is $100 more and likely the same on context
>>
>>52482928
It's because it is super cheap and much more safely recyclable (recycling plastics introduces much more atmospheric pollution)
>>
I've got my gear vr coming in tomorrow op for my note 5
>>
>>52483760
And lenses...

You are seriously missing out, the lag and pixel density are finally to the point of not giving strain and giving a good immersive experience

Holy shit this is real, wtf is wrong with people. If I see someone around town with this shit on there face, I dunno if I should punch them with it on, or pour water on it.

you can just us a stereoscopic viewer from an antique store. At least when the fad is over, you still have an antique with value.

Why would you see someone around town with one on? It's a personal experience not a walk around town sort of thing

Also why would you want to ruin sometimes fun?

Go get a Google cardboard from Ali express or Amazon, you don't have anything to lose

Go explore the world in an afternoon

Stop being a shit head fuddy duddy
>>

never really used one, but yes.

Why would you ever plug your computer into one of those not knowing whats on it.

It would be kind of funny to put some hoarse porn on them though.
>>

Try it out buddy, it's really not a fad, it is fucking amazing

It does sound kind of cool though don't get me wrong. Just wtf, cardboard?

It's made of cardboard so it is accessible for everyone

It was made for the Google keynote in 2014 as a goody bag gift that anyone can use, but they published the plans to make it and made the demo and apk available for all and now it has boomed because any company with a laser cutter and cardboard can make one, also there are a thousand companies now making plastic ones as well

Btw the widespread distribution of cardboard saved a kids life already:

you can use trinusvr and iz3d/other "3d driver", it's actually pretty decent if you have nvidia gpu and can stream image through limelight.
of course it's not even remotely as good as real rift, but well - it's free.

keep in mind that trinus does not emulate rift, it uses different protocols like freetrack.
>>
>>52486285
it'll be like speakers vs (bulky) headphones, but with video tech. There will always be a place for head-mounted displays, but they are not going to be overtaking regular displays anytime soon. Maybe in 30 years it will be 50/50, if they are heavily adopted

Have a S6 and a GearVR. Thought this whole thing was a meme but it fucking isn't. Watching twitch streams on the cinema feels like you are in a cinema. Netflix feels like you are watching it on a big screen too. Unfortunately it's only one screen. Wished it was available for the moon screen and cinema screen too. Quality is watchable and quite decent but not crystal clear, but I watched a movie just fine. Need to try out porn though, thanks for the link anon.

How many people do you think use speakers to listen to music now ano
>It's been 50 years since the walkman came out
Well fuck, but still.
I bet it'd be something like 98% of music's on headphones, 2% on speakers.

I haven't got my phone on my so I can't check, I usually have it on SBS 180 for side by side 180 videos, and on the second screen leave it on default full control.
Might wanna adjust the zoom to suit your video though.
The VR interface is garbage, but I just deal with it.
Switching from 360 to 180 in VR doesn't work for me, so I set it all up beforehand.
Once you've got it right it's great. Just skip between videos and shit.
>>52489031
Two eyes, two slightly different images.
If it has a 3d video it'll give the screen n each eye the proper image, if it's a 2d image it displays the same picture on both screens.
>>52489050
Google's uses the phones gyro, GearVR uses additional Gyro's and only works with select samsung handsets.
That said, GearVR's far closer to the rift than cardboard, but it's a smaller ecosystem.
>>
>>52489050
GearVR has its own tracker and doesn't rely on the phone's.

Also, oculus worked with Samsung to reduce latency. Carmack tweeted about it quite a bit.

I bought a couple actually, and one came with a little controller.
I'm using a Zenfone 2 in it, I think it's the 5.5" version.
Getting games that work with the controllers can be a pain.
>>52489356
It might, depending on the headset you use.
4.3" is bare minimum.
Try it without a housing to make sure the gyro works with the apps, but the nexus devices are usually all pretty good.
>>
>>52489683
Cool, 5.5 here too. More interested for video desu
Thanks
>>
>>52483304
No, it's the minimum. It's the recommended minimum hardware level for a playable experience. It has to drive 2 1080p monitors at 90hz+, the gtx 970 struggles heavily at 1440p maintaining 60 fps in most recently released big budget games

>>
>>52490125
One, that's 3.5".
Really fucking under the limit for VR, no matter the holder. Your eyes are just too far apart.
Two of them, actually, that might even work.

Two, the res is around quarter HD. That's 480x640 per eye.
But if you're using two, eh.
Then, getting a custom board working for this thing would be pretty hard.
I'd be surprised as shit if it used eDP.
Not even the iPhone 6's screen is anything near what you get in the $100 Lenovo Lemon 3.
I'm guessing if you shopped around you could find a 1080p 5-6" panel for $30-50.
The 4's just not worth the hassle.
Again, cheap is good, but it's just too small to work.
Let me look... The nexus 5's is 1080p at $30 in single volume.
Tap into that shit and you have a DK2 for $100.

Will you be able to use 2 GTX970's? In SLI mode? One GFX for each eye?
>>
>>52493418
That's already possible, at least in Nvidia's OpenGL implementation. Dunno about D3D, seems likely though.

Basically you can request that both GPUs handle the same commands, probably avoiding a lot of driver overhead, but then pass them different camera params using a special BufferData call just before you draw stuff.

>98% of music's on headphones, 2% on speakers.

It's different; wearing headphones doesn't make you blind and unable to move without stumbling into a wall like wearing a head-mounted display does. Also, you can fit the walkman in your pocket. With a head mounted display, you are wired to a huge ass computer

What is a good VR headset to get?? I'd like the microUSB port on my phone to be open so I can connect a controller
>>
>>52493410
where do I get cross-eyed 3D movies?
>>
>>52494526
This. You could get even smaller if you do some custom case work and stuff in a Nano. Practically lunchbox sized at that point.
>>
>>52494526
>implying you could carry that around with you while VR'ing like you could carry a Walkman while listening
my whole point

Lol weak manlet detected.

>>52492720
That Viewmaster is better than the crappy cardboard ones, but a few things to consider.
1. No head strap
2. No holes for wired audio
3. No way to control it while enclosed

You will need blue tooth headphones, keyboard, and stick anywhere velcro for hands free.
>>
>>52494545
download any SBS 3d movie, they're everywhere on trackers, especially private ones

most of the time you have to run them through a short avisynth script to flip the frames, they're not switched like they need to be for crosseyed

Just tried this with my phone, it was great.

Thanks anon i look forward to more fap sessions now
>>

Know anything that fits your three points?
>>
>>52495116
Homido looks pretty nice, but I can't tell if it will do wired audio. They have a Bluetooth controller they sell along with their headset, but both at 85 euro.

One question, does VR give headaches or something like that?
>>
>>52495387
Depends a lot on the person, content and equipment used. Many things can go wrong with shitty VR.

For example, a display that doesn't match your interpupillary distance will leave you watching stuff cross-eyed; if you somehow get used to it you will feel cross-eyed when not using the device. More likely, however, you'll just get a headache and feel like your eye muscles are cramping. Better devices let you adjust the distance between the lenses and tweak the displayed content to match that. Badly produced content that doesn't converge properly or just moves too much to let you focus on anything will probably do the same thing. Also, laggy head tracking is very likely to leave one nauseous after a while.

Stuff like this is why the Oculus team keeps saying they have one chance to get this shit right; if their gear ruins somebody's vision or leaves people puking into their keyboards VR is going to be over for another 20 years.

So, all the content that works with a cheap cardboard will also work with GearVR, right?

Is google cardboard good enough or I need to go for expensiver VRs?

Consume immersive video media.
>>
>>52495830
Porn and games
>>
>>52495729
Should be fine for watching videos and stuff, assuming the built-in gyro is stable enough when you're not moving. If the stock Cardboard design doesn't work with your face you can always make a new "plate" for housing the lenses from some cardboard and tape.

Porn and waifu immersion.

but what about something like google cardboard? you're not going to be playing games other than shitty proof-of-concept apps on that, are you?
>>
>>52495830
Use head tracking as an input for 3D environments or 3D video for an immersive full peripheral visual experience.
>>
>>52495888
That is correct. You won't be playing cutting edge games at 90 fps on a phone.

so why would anyone buy google cardboard?
even if it's so cheap it just seems completely useless, just based on the lack of things to do

Because it is neat for like 5 minutes until you get bored.
>>

Personally I would want something with a T head strap so you dont have to constantly hold the headset to your face.

I'm using an LG G3 with cardboard and keep seeing double images. Do I have to adjust the lenses because of my shotty eyes?

You should've bought a VR with adjustable lenses. You fucked up.

What's the best cardboard for an LG G4? There's so many models on their website that it's confusing.

Here's some must have features
>must fit your phones dimensions (double check this)
>adjustable lens and viewing angle
>a T-strap for your head

Optional
>Bluetooth remote

Could you give an honest review? I'm thinking of buying one once I receive my new cellphone.
>>
>>52498374
It's not amazing. it's cheap as fuck and you can tell but it works suprisingly well. The problem is lack of content, which you can alleviate with programs that stream from a PC if you have a gaming PC, and the cardboard app shows you apps.
There's no Netflix, which can be a big deal if you're hoping to watch movies on it.
If the screen is 1080p it'll be okay, 720p is the lowest you should try

Just note you might have to fight innacurate sensors drifting which can be annoying as fuck, resetting the phone or laying it on a flat surface as you start the app seems to help
>>
I've noticed that there a lot of cheap plastic "insert your phone" VR headsets out there. Why buy a cardboard?

>>52499019
Because they're even cheaper, you can get them for dollars

Also if they're actually Cardboard compatible your phone can adjust the size and distortion for a more natural look, everything looked "big" and way too close until I did that
>>
I can view some VR videos alright, but I can't get a lot of other stuff to work right, the images are split up as if I wasn't using cardboard and had it close to my face, is this a common issue?
