Anyone here still running their Q6600? Using it for a gaming rig still?????? Q6600 appreciation thread.
Q6600 + GTX 760
Plays every game on medium/high settings.
the q6600 fucking rapes black niggers in the ass
that CPU is still faster than anything AMD makes
>>52461616
that is surprising but ok
me
>>52461585
Q8200 good enough?
I know its un OC-able as fuck but its still surprisingly good anno 2016
>>52461585
I remember my piece of shit B3 Q6600 not being able to go over 3.2ghz without one milllion volts and 10000000000000000C.
1 more thing I just read an archive and some anon said;
>Cool thing about Core2Quad and Core2Extreme chips was that they were basically two CPUs working in tandem.
What do they mean by this?
Is the C2Q not a true Quad core is that what they meant?
I had a Q6600 until I replaced it with my current build.
I still have the motherboard and processor sitting in a box somewhere. I may build something with it.
I5 3350p Is pretty good, Dont buy the q8200.
Not a Q6600, but I gave my little brothers my old QX6700 workstation with a GTX 460. Works fine for games from 2006-2011.
>>52461753
C2Qs are a pair of C2Ds sharing the same package.
>>52461753
>>52461921
pic related but instead of P4s they're C2Ds
>>52461934
>>52461781
Im Q8200 guy >>52461710
Ofc you shouldnt buy the core2Quad (unless you get em for VERY cheap)
What This thread is about is that the C2Q 6600 and others are still performing Very well nowadays,It seems the CPU's after the C2D and C2Q dont "age" as fast as other pc components (read GPUs,Hard drives,Mobo's etc)
>>52461959
I assume the "line method" when applying TIM is usefull only for the Core 2 quad series?
My shitbox-of-the-month DD is a Q6600 with a Quadro FX 1700
Great performer, don't really notice a difference between it and my SB/Nehalem systems for my average workload. After I get 4 GB of ECC DDR2 in it it's going to my Grandma to replace her Pentium D while I bring in a dual E5450 box to replace it.
>>52461974
Its inevitable to upgrade.
>>52461585
I'm using for my Server. Good idea?
Reminder that Core 2 Quads are the most powerful x86 cpus available that aren't botnet.
>>52462073
They're probably botnetted in the chipset Tbh
>>52462073
I'm pretty sure LGA1366 cpus are good
>>52461585
i was until the other day.
turned it into a server.
you should overclock your Q6600. it is pretty easy. even if you have a pre-build like i do. you just have to cover/tape one of the connectors.
http://hubpages.com/technology/Get-more-from-your-Quad-Core-Q6600
you dont have to tape the top. i didnt and get 3GHz now.
>>52462154
also, for the dumb, use black electric tape. not regular tape.
Not a Q6600, but a Q8300. Rocking this baby with 8gb of DDR2, it's still perfectly fine for even modern stuff. It's amazing to think this was launched in 2008 but performance wise it's still above average. HD7870 for graphics, BF4 runs well enough to play it until my main computer's mobo gets replaced. RMA taking fucking ages, but it turns out I could do with this computer almost as well.
People buy i3 based rigs for 400-600, but I just don't see the point. Scouring these parts online, used, totals to somewhere under 200. I overpaid a bit for my parts, because I just wanted them quick, but I could've been patient and pay 10-15% less total at least.
$30 for the processor, $50 for the ddr2 (got lucky, not easy to find matching pairs of 2gb DDR2 units with relatively high clock speeds), motherboard I already had but these can be found for 30 and upwards. 7870 nowadays sells for 50 and upwards, so that's 180 combined for the core parts. 430-500w PSU for maybe 30, tips just over 200. And that's parts purchased individually, people sell outdated rigs for next to nothing. A guy I know got a similar set, with the mobo using DDR3, for 150. It already had a GPU, I think 480, but he got a 7850 for it, total under 200. I used an SSD I had laying around, but a 120gb is 50 new, 30 maybe used.
This shit here still rocks. I know I can't break any framerate limits with this rig but fact that it's almost 10 years old in a few years and it works above well warms my heart.
>>52462251
I hate to break it to you man, but you can get a refurbished workstation built around a Haswell (i5-4590 is a popular workstation chip) for $150.
Granted, it's a prebuilt so you're not going to upgrading it ever... but neither are you so...
>>52462152
The libreboot project says all i3/i5/i7 cpus are affected. Going by release date, the i7-920, i7-940 and i7-965ee *may* be okay, but that's it.
>>52462340
Okay, that's true but doesn't apply to where I live.
>>52462363
Where I live you can still get Sandy i5 and sometimes i7s for the equivalent of $200-250. There's probably at least something for you our there.
>>52462355

CAn anyone point me in the direction of a not retardedly expensive lga 1366 board? theres some dude selling an i7 960 near me for 30$ and it seems like a sick deal but all the boards i find are like 150+
>>52462814
that's the rub, it's like that with all first gen i series, I can get an i7 first gen for about 40dollarydoos, but the cheapest non-OEM motherboard costs at least 70+ most of the time.
>>52462973
70 is downright reasonable, hell i'd even take an oem board

I did just that, Inspiron 580. It's a shitty board, ended up setting it up for my dad since he just uses it to watch movies and check his bank account.

guess I'll buy the 960 for me and get my dad a core2quad inspiron, probably throw in a gtx 750 and get him some games for funzies
thanks m8
>>52463115
Libreboot explains it all in their faq, with external links. It's the management engine which is the problem. It's present but can be disabled on core 2 cpus, but this changed to no longer be possible in the second half of 2009, which was when the i7 line was released.

>>52463264
so, even if there's an option in the BIOS/Mobo pins to disable it, it won't matter?
Q6600 and 750 ti reporting in
i still own a q6600 but that pc hasn't been used in like 4 years and its gathering dust somewhere in my garage. moved on to i7 920 and 6700k
I still have a Q6600 in an older build. Now I don't really use that machine for much though. Considering making a media server with it.
Do you play cpu intensive games? If yes Q6600 will limit your frame rate on gtx 960 or higher, if you don't play cpu intensive games Q6600 is perfectly sufficient
>>52461633
Q6600 was actually listed in the GTA 5 minimum requirements. It's not quite outdated yet
>>52463297
You can't disable it via normal BIOS options, and if you try to do so anyway with more arcane methods for i3/i5/i7 you'll brick the computer.
>>52463277
>1156
swing and a miss, but thanks. i7 860s are kinda cheap so this might actually be a better option, thank ye
Wow, I'm still on the Q6600 and was about to upgrade, maybe I'll postpone it a bit.

>>52461585
Yeah nigger.
I got it in a dell years ago with a pair of 9800 in sli.
The cards took a shit a few years ago, but the q6600 is still running fine.
i remember back in the day when my dad was building a new home theatre PC and i recommended him this and he got it
I upgraded from a Q6600 to an i5 4670 and after 6 months I upgraded my GTX 460 to a 770 only to discover my PCI-E 16x slot was fucked. Returned my mobo to get fixed (which took them 2 fucking months, the arseholes) so I had to go back to my Q6600 setup again. It was unbearably slow but I just never noticed it before my upgrade.
I still have the gear sitting in my wardrobe but I've used some of the parts (like the PSU) to fix other people's computers so I haven't bothered turning it into a low-powered torrenting machine, even though I really should.
>>52463754

>>52463433
what about 1366 xeons?
>>52463986
Huh. Forgot about those. There's a bunch that were released in March 2009, so they fall into the same category as the i7-920 etc. *May* be okay, but I don't know whether disabling the management engine has been tested on them.

The E5450 is identical to the X5450, but with a much cooler 80W TDP.
Dell listed them as X5450s on the service tag inventory though, which is weird.
>>52465132
Probably it right there. I just keep the 32-bit version on my flash drive since I only use it for CPU identification. Disregard all the cocks I suck.
>>52462251
But that's freaking dumb because you can do the same thing with nehalem processors and get an X58 motherboard instead. You can buy i7-920's and 930's all day long for $30 and get true quad cores with hyperthreading that are better clock for clock AND they hit 4ghz pretty easily.
Or, if you're more ambitious, you could buy a 6 core xeon 5650 or 5670 for $60-70.
I gave my Q6600 away. Now rocking a 4790K
