I think they were going for the look of someone in front of you holding it. Why they went the length of editing the buttons upside down, I don't know. I feel like their main marketing of the power glove was that it looked cool, not that it was actually a useful controller.
I also feel like it was really the motion control aspect that Nintendo even made it for. Nintendo's always been an innovator as far as console technology, and though it was well before its time, the power glove would have been the first console motion control. Eventually the Wii would perfect the technology (using the same technological concepts as the glove), but the endgame is that Nintendo pushed it first.
