I recently got a SubPac S2 (seatback model).
Basically, this is a headphone subwoofer (tactile bass system) that goes on your computer chair.
I'm a basshead so I crank the intensity almost all the way up.
If you want to feel bass, get a SubPac.

sennheiser HD 280 Pro

So I hear great things about the AKG K702, but just basing it on a graph here, let's say our benchmark is an HD800, the HD700's look pretty close to 800's while the akg's lack in the bass & a bit in midrange.
I don't really know how much of a difference this graph is to listening to these cans in real life, since also my only headphone experience I've had are HD280's.

I like me some bass for sure, since a lot of my music is electronic, but also I listen to acoustic & film scores when working, so my music preference is all over the place. 800s seem to sound to accurate & sometimes annoying on many reviews i've seen so my best choice right now is the 700's or maybe 650's.

What do you guys think I should get?
>>
>>52448818
Well if you're willing to try open headphones, try to get a pair of HD558s used/refurb/whatever for under $100; possibly the most worth it for comfort and sound. Open backed headphones generally have better sound, but obviously aren't isolating at all, so they aren't as good for portable/urban use.

If you want to stick with closed, MDR7506 are your best bet hands down.

Also, the K240s are open backed and you can find them for much cheaper than $80. Just looking on amazon, they have them for $68 new and even cheaper used.
>>
>>52448865
I doubt that you can buy a HD800 or HD700 with that budget...maybe HD650 is more suitable to your needs.
>>
Are the Superlux HD668b really any good, or are they a sort of poverty meme headphone?
>>
>>52448363
>>52448883
My bad, I misread the K240 for $80, however you might still be able to get 7506s for cheaper than $80.
>>
>>52448893
yeah not considering 800's, that's just meme money for a pair of cans for me.
I can pick up a the 700's for new, @ $400 so my budget covers that.
>>
>>52448865

On a serious note I don't think the Senns sound bad. I thought you were just setting up a shitpost about AKGs.

I do prefer the K702s since I use them for everything form games to music. I like how they sound. They're analytical which is what I wanted. I really like their design and ear cups too. Very comfortable.

No experience with the DT880. Just throwing those out there.
>>
>>52448979
the DT880's look pretty good graph wise. Only down side is that cable's are not detachable, but I use my cans for editing mainly on video work, so it's not like I ever move them from my desk.
>>
>>52446792
It doesn't have better extension.

>>52448865
HD 800 and HD 700 are bass shy and inaccurate. The HD 700 is especially bad. The HD 650 would be best option out of those.

Coming back to what >>52448979
>>52448917 said, bear in mind that headphones with enhanced bass may be less detailed in the mids (or even in the treble) if bass isn't tight. Both HD600/650, DT880 and K702 are really great headphones, even though they sound quite different: the DT880 are slightly V-shaped, HD 600/HD 650 are warmer/more forgiving (the HD650 is bassier), K702 is colder/less forgiving and arguably more detailed.
>>
>>52449882
>The HD 650 would be best option out of those.

I hear great things out of the 650 too, that it's the most balanced.
Is the graph wrong? Cause both the 700's & 800's look to have more amplitude in the bass than the 650 does.
also there's a drop off right in the middle of the treble for the 650's.

>>52450189
well based on what both you guys said, either of the suggestions would work well for me.
I was leaning toward the 700's, but now I suppose it's either the 650's or the k702's. I think I'd choose barely the k702's since I've never really had detail before.

Is it fine to measure cans against a graph or how do you pick bass tightness & other factors that make your choice in headphones?

I own a pair of Sony MDR XB1000, the cushions offer nice passive sound cancelling, they sound warm and can have some nice highs when equalized properly making cords and smaller details sound crisp and well defined.

I tried the Bose Quiet Comfort 15, the noise cancelling is very impressive and the fidelity is nice, the mic is cool and the replaceable ear cushions are neat, unfortunately it lacks the warmth that I've come to enjoy in my electronic music with the MDR XB1000.

I recently returned a pair of Vmoda m100 since the ear cups were very uncomfortable and the treble sounded horrible, a shame really the build quality was nice.

I have a friend who owns a pair of Audio Technicas, they are very nice but I enjoy more warm headphones rather than neutrals.

I've been recommended a pair of AKGs and Sennheiser but I forget which ones, what do you guys recommend? I'd like to have something with good fidelity on the warm side.

replaceable cables would be nice.

> I think I'd choose barely the k702's since I've never really had detail before.
The reproduction of details is due also to the quality of your recording. AKG is very accurate, then if, let's say, the guitarist is keeping the microphone very close to his guitar during the recording, the AKG is going to make you hear every little slide or prick on the chords. This thing still amazes me even though I've been listening to music on my AKG for a month every day. This can be a downside though: if your recording suck, the K702 is going to make it sound horrible, while it's going to make your recording shine if it's done well. That's why I was saying that the K702 is less forgiving. One more thing I should also mention about the K702 is its spacious sound, which is a great plus for acoustic recordings featuring many instruments. If you listen to a live recording, you may be able to tell if it was made in an auditorium, or a club or an arena based on the reverberations of sound (especially voices and drums).
>Is it fine to measure cans against a graph or how do you pick bass tightness & other factors that make your choice in headphones?
Yes, but measurements can be really different and they won't tell you much about bass tightness or details. The best thing you can do is get different heapdhones and test them yourself.

>>52450797
You did well dude. What you should expect from your K702 is a clear and balanced sound. The bass may sound a bit underwhelming to you at the beginning, but it will sound more detailed and accurate. Do you have an amp to drive them?

Has anyone else worn out their expensive headphones? I'd like to hear about what parts start to go on the popular models.

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro's. The cable at the headphone end has worn through and is now frayed. I repaired it with some heatshrink.
The piece of steel attaching the cup to the headband has a notched T shape piece of steel that allows you to adjust the headband. The notching is too shallow so the cup slips. In addition the cross on the "T" is really narrow, so it and the really shitty plastic housing has worn out, so now the cup falls off on one side. I fixed it by overtighening the screws, but that will cause damage to the housing.
Also the pads wore out in no time.

Its only 4 years old, is there anything more durable?
Also I've noticed that some guitar cables have a large metal spring at the end of the cables which looks like it adds a lot of durability. Does anything come with that?

They're somewhat known for being V-shaped headphones. Pads affects the response a bit, not sure how this is reflected in the measurements here.

A large enough boost around the 150-300 Hz region is a general indicator of murky sound and cloudiness.

Sennheiser HD 419
Sony MDRXB450APR

That's pretty much the FR. So-called "shitty recordings" are just called that from poorly managed sibilants, distortion/clipping, gain ranging in production and so on.

>Under 100Ohm if possible.
>I only have a fiio E10K and I don't want to get further into the craze.
Really not how that works. This is a function of sensitivity in voltage. Ignore impedance as is relates to sensitivity.

A mounting fixture plate and a mic.

The difficulty with measurements lies mainly in

-Obtaining data that is repeatable and reproducible
-Data that relates to the intended user, the mean human ear
-Acquiring easily and expediently measured data

I'm saying that "analytical" or "forgiving" are not aspects of the headphone that should be taken as a given. These would match up with peaks and dips in FR, which can be adjusted out.

Stereotypical "forgiving" would be something like HD650 or ATH-R70x.

>>
>>52453473
The point is not to create a binaural simulation, especially given the lack of binaural audio, so it is really all about what the listener wants. That was the point of buying a nicer headphone, right?

Most guides boil down to doing it by ear, in a more methodical manner than randomly throwing in boosts and dips with a parametric EQ. This is one example of such a guide:

Boosts and dips are made by adjusting a parametric EQ ideally. A parametric EQ is an equalizer in which you define the frequency and frequency level you want to affect, besides the level. Equalizer APO is an example of a software based system-wide EQ for Windows with a parametric EQ.
Dips and peaks are identified by sine sweep, noise bursts, and other reference signals.
Or by taking a measurement, you would plot the divergence of the response from a target curve, then remove it and see if you like that result.

Each point of adjustment you make is made by a filter, and the primary filters you will need are peaking (resonant) filters and shelf filters. There are many other types of filters, but they are used mostly for music production or electronic design, they don't have much use for adjusting the sound of a headphone.

Resonant filters have a center frequency and Q factor/octave bandwidth that you adjust. The center frequency is the frequency that the main effect is focused on, the bandwidth sets how large a range it affects. Bandwidth and Q factor both refer to the range of a filter, but unlike octave range the Q factor is a description of the "narrowness" of the filter, for lack of a better term.
Shelf filters are the tone controls, the bass and treble knobs of old. They affect everything generally above or below the frequency center of the filter. Q/octave refers to the transition range of the shelf

Pre-amp/digital gain adjustment must be made for the EQ, to avoid clipping. It needs to be at least much as the largest boost made to avoid distortion.

I don't know a thing about mics but after some searching people seem to use omnidirectional condenser measurement mics and even the cheaper options seem to do really well. The possible ear coupler and achieving consistent seal and position of the headphones on the measurement rig will be a bit challenging. Some DIY measurement rigs seem to use some kind of acoustic foam around the mic capsule with a small area around the mic left bare. Might be better to get materials, build and experiment. Been thinking of getting a measurement mic for loudspeaker room response correction for a while now and the same mic would work fine for a simple headphone measurement rig.

>Data that relates to the intended user, the mean human ear
Accuracy in this would be hard to do I imagine.

Hey, not sure if you knew about this already, but apparently Hifiman's PR department in http://hifiman.com/articles/detail/366 has no idea what they are doing.

The new 2.5mm revision of the 400i also removed the backplate for the drivers. Not sure if this change would make it easier for a hair or something to get in and cause rattling.
>>
>>52454505
HD 558 and HD 598 are essentially the same headphones. There are tiny differences in frequency response of both headphones as they use the same drivers. HD 558 has a piece of foam blocking the driver from the backside. Supposedly removing this foam makes them exactly like the HD 598.

HD 600 has better frequency response extension than the HD 5x8-series, lower distortion and generally more neutral response. It clamps more and is less sensitive so you might need an amplifier with it. It's all around higher fidelity than the lower end models but tonality is still very similar, close to neutral.

HD 650 is very close to the HD 600 but it has a bit better extension in the bass and the tonality is warmer aka It has more bass in amplitude and less treble. Build wise everything between the HD 650 and HD 600 is replaceable and interchangeable. HD 650 is about as sensitive as the HD 600 so it might need an amplifier.

>to use omnidirectional condenser measurement mics
It works fine if you calibrate the mic, not that hard to do. A 1/2 inch condenser mic has some similarities to the ear drum, but any other small mic on a plate will do.
The foam adds a slight amount of damping and provides a soft and compliant surface for the headphone, much like skin and flesh. Then again, a real head has contours that create gaps with bone and cartilage that don't flex as well as soft foam.
Plate spacing to get the pressure the headband provides, at a slight angle.

it hasnt been fast at all for me. it took me about 5 days (from first email to them to the day i got an rma code from the support guy). he then told me to give them the shipping code from fedex so they could prepare a ready-to-go package for me the same day they got mine, which i did. i came home, and emailed the tracking code same day. they did acknowledge it, but on the day fedex told me the shipment was completed, i emailed them and a day later they told me they didnt even know they got it, and they would simply give me a tracking number as soon as they were able to. its only been 2 days since then, but still, they seem to be pretty busy i suppose.

Sounds kinda pointless to make it into 2.5mm. Could of just kept the screw on, but made it easier to tighten.
>>
>>52455321
Well, 2.5mm is a lot more convenient to attach/detach than any screw, and you're no longer reliant on Hifiman's proprietary cables since it's a standard connector.
>>
>>52455369
True, more variety the better. I guess I got too fond over the screw mechanic. Is there news of their new stuff after CES? Any updates to the next gen version of the 400 or 500 series?

> HD 558 has a piece of foam blocking the driver from the backside. Supposedly removing this foam makes them exactly like the HD 598.
So if I get the cheaper 558 I can make it into a 598 (soundwise) by removing this foam? Do they sound better that way than without removing the foam?

Forgot to add I also had a pair of Sennheiser CX 300-II but those broke way too fast and they kinda sounded off compared to the M6.
>>
>>52455802
MDR-V6 or 7506 (same thing, get whichever is cheaper), though they may be less bass-heavy than what you're used to.

Other options are M40x and XPT100.

HD439. Mostly neutral all rounder with tasteful bass, replaceable cable / earpads.
Beware if you have jumbo ears though, the earpads on this are for small / medium sized ears.

Noice i'm using my brother's 702's through my e10k right now. I just bought a pair of 702's an hour ago ;).

Do you ever use bass boost with that combo?, do you use an equalizer?, if so which one m8.

Oyasumi Punpun, Nanjou Sachi. Amazing Manga if you haven't read it yet. Though be warned it is more depressing then EVA when it comes to atmosphere and plot.

>>52455528
They are nearly identical even without the foam mod and I remember seeing measurements contradicting the notion that foam actually does something. I can't comment on which is better because they are so very close and depending on the source of measurements available, one looks better than the other and vice versa on different sites. Due to the similarity, HD 558 is recommended over HD 598 here all the time. HD 598 is worse value but still a good headphone.
>>
>>52456332
>Do you ever use bass boost with that combo?
No, I feel that the bass is more than good already

> do you use an equalizer?
I really like the natural sound out of my K702 for now.

How do you like the K702?
>>
>>52449998
I use same player and same headphones, just an e10k amp/dac though
>>
>>52456484
Very nice, I previously only had a pair of takstar 2050's which are incredible for the price and my brother used to have dt770's, they both sounded very similar in my opinion. The 702's sound so clean though, it's especially noticeable when playing my midi keyboard. The only problem is that i'm not keen on the build quality, it's a bit too plastic for my liking but i'm never going to wear them outside anyway so it doesn't really bother me.

Piston 3s are pretty sweet for the price, but they don't isolate that well due to the vented design. You might still hear some traffic when the music isn't turned up all the way.

They have almost no microphonics though, so that's pretty ideal for running.

I find them less tight-fitting than the Senn CX 200 that I run with, but that may depend on your ear shape.

Thanks for the suggestions, those are a bit pricier than what I had in mind but they also look quite sturdy.

I used them as earmuffs for winter cold. Even open headphones work well at this, and it gives you something to listen to while shoveling snow.
