CueCat tanked it's creators, and did a serious whack on the already sickly Radio Shack. $185million completely gone.

For those of you who were nary more than a cumrag around 2000, this gizmo tried to do the QR code concept before everything had a camera on it. (and those have had a pretty crappie uptake anyway). The scanner gizmo was given out for free, and you could scan barcodes with it and their software would interpret it as a URL. It also supported audio: if you ran your TVs sound out to the line in of your PC, advertisers could broadcast specific tones that their software interpreted as a URL again.

It was used pretty much entirely for advertising. It meant the end user had to go to MORE effort to just look at more ads, and nobody gave a shit or wanted this.

Projects to hack or mod the device were met with legal threats, since technically end users didn't own the gizmo. They also seemed to have the infrastructure in place to start doing data collection like Facebook does today: they could tell unique devices apart, asked users age and gender during setup, and kept a log of everything viewed. Problem is the only people who bothered to set this dumb thing up were techie people who get really salty about snooping, like the /g/ of today.

I think Time called it "a failure to solve a problem nobody had in the first place."

What I don't understand is how the fuck did anyone think this piece of shit justified £185m investment? I mean it is a fucking USB barcode scanner. It couldn't have cost more than $2 to make even back in 2000. What exactly was the point of it? Were people supposed to just scan everything they buy into it? For what purpose? It just seems like the most stupid thing in the world for a consumer to own back then.

You got me. Apparently CueCat asserted scanning a barcode URL was better since you could direct people to a more complicated specific URL instead of just "hey reader, go to www.ourpage.com to learn more"

Of course the easiest solution to that without a dumb scanner is, say you put an add in Time Magazine, write "hey go to ourshit.com/Time" and people do, and you can serve up specific content and know that these people found out about you from the magazine.

How they sold investers on this shit I have no fucking clue

Java didn't kill Sun, arguably it was one of their most successful products. It was the dotcom crash, PC workstations getting powerful enough to shove their hardware into a more niche market and said hardware being marketed poorly that did them in.

No, it was a sign of Sun's failure at corporate/business strategy. They transformed themselves from a hardware company to a software company (also made worse by making an x86 Solaris). Java has consistently been a loser for both Sun and Oracle. It's the hole in the sinking boat.

Too slow to release with its specs.

The device was outclassed in terms of specs by random android TV boxes and smartphones when it was out. It wasn't a good baseline for android gaming even on release.

Games rapidly moved their minimum specs past it to the faster devices more commonly found on the market.

I'd think it provided a bunch of people with their $100 worth of gaming, though.

PS: Maybe the current new TV boxes and smartphone might be finally sufficient for a few thousand future game releases? 64bit ARM got pretty powerful, certainly more powerful than a Vita or 3DS or whatever.

You're probably right about Java, I said what I did because it's seems to be one of most prevalent artifact of Sun's legacy. Don't really think it ever made them much money, but I don't really know much about the history of Java, I was always more into the hardware side of the company.

>made worse by making x86 solaris
I can't see why that would have damaged them, Solaris was available on x86 for while, long before they started declining and as far as I'm aware was mostly only used by large businesses who wanted to further integrate their PC desktops with their SPARC infrastructure.

Intel Itanium.

Basically they tought it would be a good idea to break compatibility with x86 architecture.

I seriously hope you guys are using either x86-64 or ARM.
>>
>>52441279
Really? I thought it was a fiasco. at least when it came up. I remember reading that people got headaches while playing and the gaming experience wasn't very pleasant. But maybe it sold well.
>>
>>52441455
ARM also broke compatibility with itself a lot of times, they just didn't try to do it on the Windows ecosystem.

Even x86_64 was almost too much for Windows back then. Maybe something like Itanium would go down easier now...
>>
>>52441459
No, in the end it sold quite well as far as Nintendo's consoles go. Over 55 millions by last year, five times more than the Wii U is estimated to have sold to date (different time spans, but still).

And third parties and their games also sold reasonably well in many instances, so Nintendo got licensing fees, eh.

[I'd also think it wasn't the most expensive system to design and manufacture, but that one is a bit hard to guess accurately.]

That said, I personally don't think they'll get another good shot at this. Smartphones are too strong now.

>>

Well, I don't think so.
Afaik, ARM has been pretty solid and their microcontroller cores sorta can change because of the context.

Porting thousands of dollars in software just because one company tells you so? I have to be fair tough, I don't even know their excuse for Itanium but their surely had one, as breaking compatibility is never a good ideia unless you have something else in mind.

The market has changed, ($100 new 2ds - $200 n3ds devices for lil' Johnny don't seem that bad now that mom's buying $600 unlocked iphones) and they have ~8-10 good 'tentpole' games to sell to the enormous non-weeb market.

The 3d is a gimmick, as they pretty much acknowledged with the release of the 2ds.

The original DS didn't start really selling well until the DS lite came out a while into it's lifespan. I don't know exact sales numbers but anecdotally I know a lot of "non gamer" families who pulled the trigger on a 2ds for their 6-10 year olds

A lot of public schools are starting to issue them because they are a cheap way to get students connected.

We've reached a point that most people don't need to buy a new laptop to run the next version of Windows, run MS Office along with whatever commercial software is necessary for their job, and browse the interwebs.

Let's not forget the blatant lies told by the CEO and showed in the announce video. She was telling everyone it's got Netflix and Hulu and could run high end games. Then after release she said "oh well Netflix is over the Web there isn't a specific app.....yet! She shilled it into people believing it was supported and powerful.

The 300 series is actually pretty good. What's your problem?

Let's also not forget the bait and switch she pulled on early devs. She told them all she would only take a "small" percent of the game price to sell in the ouya store. Then she told all the early devs that they were special being part of the Ouya launch developers and made them sign exclusivity contracts to make their games "release games". Then she told them the small fee was 33% the same steam, Sony etc. charge. If she would have made the market completely open and not charged royalties it would have launched better and had more software. The hardware itself was profitable, instead she got greedy and though she had the "new" steam on her hands. She also never came through with promised bonuses to devs and employees, so alot left after the first couple months.

The CD32 was actually selling pretty well in Europe, but it was the final straw for commodore. They got hit with a patent lawsuit and couldn't sell them in the States, and couldn't raise the funds quickly enough to settle it. Just one fuckup in a depressingly long list of fuckups, which didn't even end when Commodore folded.

By the time this was cracked Dreamcast was already dead. Shitty decisions by Sega killed Dreamcast, like shitty sales of Saturn and lack of 3rd party developers.
