She is obviously an idiot or looking for an excuse to drop a class. I've taken online courses before and they're pretty clear about what kind of system you need before you take the course. My pretty basic Debian system has been fine, even when they claim it requires Windows. Also, what kind of Internet connection still requires you to install software? No matter what OS I'm using, I haven't had to install software to get a wired Internet connection since 2003, it works out of the box.
