They don't want reactions. Apple doesn't care about that, they don't care about offering the most bang for the buck on their products, that has never been their point. Their selling point is creating an image of setting yourself apart, being different, being the special minimalistic snowflake. They sell you dreams through what is probably this world's most clever piece of marketing, even if what they are selling is extremely unconventional. If anything, if they are behind this, they are just making people more acceptible to the idea so they have time to rationalize it out instead of coming out with a boom out of a sudden and risk a momentary decline in sales. WIth word about this being out so many months ahead of its launch, people will have already been lubed up nicely to properly accept this instead of being caught off guard. They will already have rationalized this loss out by the time the product is released.
