Why would you? They suck. You already have a good open and a good closed headphone.

They sound muffled, they are close to the Momentum in measurements but I'll give the edge to the Momentum because it has more gain in the lower treble which makes it sound more natural.

Again, looking to spend $200 on headphones, maybe $300 including an amp. Been looking at the AKG K7XX, but of course I only have 4 days to make the decision there before the drop ends. Wondering if anyone has any input for/against them.

>>

what about measurements existing means its the only metric someone goes off of? why cant one do both? and why do you not even include them in your "ways of knowing what something sounds like"? afraid they might perhaps show something you dont want to see?
>>
>>52410409
Someone else can clarify, but I believe the K7XXs are basically a more bassy version of the K702s. If you could find some K702s for cheaper than $200, used or something, it might be worth it to you. I ordered K702s a couple days ago based on advice from people here and they haven't even arrived yet, so I can't tell you my opinion on them yet, but I also considered the K7XXs briefly before ordering the K702s. I bought mine used on amazon for about $170

Are the E80s worth it, or are there better IEMs in the ~$50 range?

Balance isn't a huge deal, but preferably something neutral to bassy.

You can EQ the bass response on the M50 to sound more desirable to your ears or to a flatter response based on available frequency response graphs online.

So the answer to your question is yes.
>>
guys i have this genius marketing plan. seriously hear me out.

we spend all our money to first make a quite neutral headphone. doesnt have to be perfect, just pretty good. once we have it, and it gets pretty good reviews, lets make shitloads of other models based on it, with very minimal changes in the FR for each one. not so minimal that you cant hear anything though - no, you need to be able to hear something, but it should still be quite subtle.

now everyone is not only going to be praising our original, but talking about all our other successful models. not only will they say were great because of how many neutral models we have, but people will spend time talking about which ones are -actually- the best after extensive useless measurements. not to mention, they will also argue about it, tooth and nail like audiophiles always have about theirs obviously being the best one. not only will this create tons of posts everywhere to give our brand massive free advertising, but tons of people will end up buying many of the models - just to hear it for themselves! were going to be rich.

oh wait, someone already beat me to the punch... AKG.

>Is EQ really everything?
To sound quality? Strongly, but not quite all of it. Headphone listeners tend to very strongly underestimate how much sound quality is just EQ, but it is still not all of it.
There was a study showing several headphones equalized to the same target. Rating went something like

QC15=SR-009>K701>Beats Studio>>MDR-V600

The much maligned Bose is rated just as good as the Stax flagship after EQ. The other headphones performed below that, the Sony in particular being considered subpar with the same target.

For IEMs, it usually is the entire sound quality. A well picked in-ear for like 20 bucks gives you very excellent sound after EQ, even if the FR is screwy.
>>
>>52411814
>but it is still not all of it.

Distortion is also generally very low with the cheap in-ear sets, and higher on more expensive ones. The dynamic driver present advantages in linearity over the balanced armatures found in pricier in-ears, although you could counter that the armature distortion can be managed.

>>52411840
>So what's the rest?
Non-linear distortions.
Non-linearity was being considered in general, the goal of the study was to identify ways to analyze distortion measurements. You can read the study yourself on the /g/wiki if you like, its name is "The Correlation between Distortion Audibility and Listener Preference in Headphones".

THD sorta works as a predictor of "badness", but the "non-coherence" analysis seemed to make the distinction most clear between the worst rated headphones.

>I would recommend [something else]
>I can get it used for cheap and I live in Nowhere, New Zealand, so [something else] isn't for sale locally, and it isn't on used market
An undervalued customs declaration later, his DAC2.

More recently:
>orders HD 800S from Jan Meier, priced about the same HD 800 locally
>posts about delivery updates from time to time
I missed out on the why he picked 800S.

Which is better for general listening Sennheiser HD 280 Pro or Sony MDR7506 Professional?
>>

The latter by far.

Also the latter is more comfortable.

The HD280 Pro's niche over the Sony was that it is better for noisier environments because it has a tighter clamp which gives it better isolation.

I think you recommended the Lynx Hilo, but that was more expensive anyway.
>I missed out on the why he picked 800S.
Because of the shape of the earcups/comfort, detachable cables and similar sound sig to my 880s. Also their resale value, being Senns. The main thing that held me back with the HD800 was the sibilance/crazy 6KHz peak so when I saw the measurements showing the S had addressed it well, I was sold.

Also my previous audition of the HD800 led me to believe they'd sound better at home than in-store and possibly be more comparable to my speakers, but I guess not.

If there were a headphone with the HD800 enclosure and an HD650 sound sig I think go for that over this though.

In any case the option to sell is always there, especially when the local price of these is going to be at least $400 more than I paid.

>What makes you like speakers more?
Treble linearity/smoothness, actual soundstage, sound is more enveloping (I'd expect this to be more the case for headphones but apparently not) plus the convenience of them. The only thing headphones have over them for me is bass impact (unless you have a fuckhuge sub) but with the HD800/S the drivers being further from your ears kinda eliminates the impact of it anyway. I know it's kind of a copout to say this but right now I can't even think of what exactly makes me go for the speakers most of the time, I just know when I listen to them that they're my preference.

I think I'll pick up a UMIK-1 later on to get a rough measurement for some EQ and maybe even throw together a cheapo headphone measurement rig.

They kinda do yeah but I still think they look better than with the plate on. I tried asking if I could get DT880 pro grill replacements but they only replace the entire cup and if I sent in premiums for replacement pro cups I don't know if they'd even go with it. It's funny because when I was first looking at buying them I preferred the look of the Premium but later on I started preferring the Pro more, aside from the black yoke.

/g/ wiki has the link to a collection of papers uploaded to mega which you should check out. Hydrogenaudio wiki is a good source for information as are the Hydrogenaudio forums. NwAvGuy has great articles in his blog. You should read through it. It's explained in layman's terms so anyone can understand. Also we have the one anon here occasionally who is very knowledgeable of audio related stuff. He corrected some stuff regarding damping factor concept which NwAvGuy talks about in the blog. Not making him to spoonfeed info but he might be able to provide some places or sites to read about. Signals both digital and analog, psychoacoustics and circuits are all related to each other if you want to get a full picture of how things work and how they are perceived in actual listening. Here are two videos to watch about digital signals:

Then it means that you're more of a basshead and that a neutral headphone wouldn't probably be the best for you. The HD600 won't grant you a better bass than the K702. Have you tried to enbale the bass boost on the E10K while testing the K702? You could look for a HD650 (but it may be too expensive for you) or, even better, for a Beyer DT880 250/600 ohm.

>You can though because the E10K won't drive 600s properly.
Stop posting. E10K is completely fine for HD 600. HD 600's voltage sensitivity is below average but E10K has plenty enough for them. HD 600's power draw is rather small because of the high impedance. E10K has limited output power but once again enough for the HD 600. To compare, the aforementioned K702 has higher power draw and a tad bit lower sensitivity than the HD 600 but it too should be fine with the E10K.

>You would know this if you've ever listened to them

But you're the expert here, keep up the great recommendations to people who don't know any better when they can get better sound quality for less considering their equipment. ;^)
>>
>>52416673
>usb-powered amp
USB can deliver way more power than what is required for driving almost any headphone. This has nothing to do how the amplifier draws its power anyway.
>so he can come back in a week asking why his 600s sound lifeless.
What? And since you seem to be so certain that E10K can't power HD 600s, you must be able to explain why that is. Output power and voltage are sufficient, output impedance is very low and that's mostly a non-issue with 300 Ohm nominal headphones anyway. There will not be shifts in the frequency response due to the low output impedance, distortion will not be audible because of the relatively low power draw, voltage is high enough for a loud listening volume... What else is there? What is lifeless?

Measurements have nothing to do with a headphone sensistivity, unless you're talking of a different kind of sensitivity. Also both the K702 sens and the HD600 sens which are declared by the manufacturers are right.

>It kind of puzzles me how little studies there are being done of these and how small they are.
Audio distortion has been a topic for research for many decades. The Audio Engineering Society usually publishes someone's research paper on the subject a couple times a year. There has been some difficulty in relating how we can measure distortion and how we hear it, which has been the main difficultly in understand distortion.

>Are the effects of already well known or is there not enough interest or money to fund studies of it?
It's definitely not cheap to perform a study with a large sample size. Securing trained listeners makes this more difficult.
It's also generally understood that good quality modern drivers don't have much of a problem with distortion.

A single tone covers up the ear's ability to hear other tones in a similar frequency range, the distortions. This is skewed to frequencies above the tone, so for those very high frequencies, or lower frequency behavior, they are still clearly heard.
In most tests, complex music with many sounds and tones usually makes distortions more difficult to hear. Simpler music pieces, an instrument solo for example, tend to make distortions easier to hear.
There is no reason to assume you can hear anything below the minimum threshold of hearing. This also places a limit on how much distortion can be heard, besides the masking tone.

How this comes together and limits of detectable distortion is more ambiguous, especially with loudness effects.

>Or maybe it's just the plethora of misleading and wrongful information from the consumer audio industry and online communities giving me this idea.
If the researchers and engineers are having a hard enough time with this, how could the layperson possibly know?

why dont you try to get tube amps working with a mechanical watch? that way we could bring the threads together, where everyone would surely be very happy, plus you get get extra high ticking resolution and detail through a quality tube amp. what could go wrong

That's just going to colorize the watches with tubes. Still better to go solid state with the watches senpai. ^:*)

nothing sound quality wise. the cable is coiled and the clamp is tighter on the pro version. as far as impedance goes, you want to try and go with the 250ohm, but it might not get loud enough for some content without an amp
>>
>>52418449
No difference at all. If you're concerned about the design like the grill, I'll considered the 880 Pro.
