also I don't understand icon packs. what's the point? you can never get one that has an icon for every app you use so whenever you enter the app drawer you're reminded of the imperfection, and the icon pack styles never ever match the style of the os. It's just a mask.

Don't use the d2lte channel anymore, it stopped at CM11. They went back to carrier specific channels, so mine was d2spr and yours would be whatever the Verizon code is. You'll have to do it from the CM website though, it won't show up in the update channel on the phone itself.
i9300 still doesn't have CM12 at all, American variants do.

I just learnt how to do it this evening as well. Only got my Nexus 6P two days ago. Love it though.
I use Nova Launcher to replace Google Now Launcher. Then I just downloaded some icon packs. They cost like £0.50 each so not much.
For my screenshot the top icons (travel, social, etc) are actually groups with a few apps in them. like video has vlc, mx player, netflix, iplayer, youtube, etc. but i just set custom icons for them.
also i am using the nova tesla plugin so i get notification icons like on my iphone for messenger, text messages, email etc.
works great for me.

It's more like a complete package for doing a rice. In a KLWP rice, there are no icons, no widgets, no docks, nothing but a blank screen and an interactive background. Think of it like a shell replacement, or replacing your desktop with a webpage to make it functional and customisable.

I don't use Nova to apply the icon pack. Instead, I manually choose each icon on my home screen, so that if a pack doesn't have an icon I can use an alternative. By doing this, I leave all the app icons in my drawer as stock, so it doesn't look mismatched.
