Do you think data hoarding is real? I sort of think so, I have 5 hard drives, two are filled to the brim with random images and media and the other is 2TB of anime.

What about you?

I have about 4tb of movies and tv shows that I've accumulated over the past year.

Some of them I haven't watched, nor do I intent to. Just got them on freeleech and wanna retain that sweet seeding bonus.
>>
>>52380028

Yeah. I often think to myself that I need to clean out my old files. Especially ancient backups of things that I haven't needed in a decade.
>>
>>52380028
Considering you don't have backups this is definitely real. You don't care about the data but you still want it.
>>
>>52380028
I have five terabytes of porn, all of which is backed up.

in the far future when the surveillance-industrial complex, SJW democrats, and evangelical republicans have all conspired to censor the internet, I will be distributing my collection to others in secret so that future generations of teenagers will know the tradition of fapping to pirated JAV, just like I did
>>
>>52380028
check some of the HSG threads and you will know if they are real or not.
personally, I used to be a data hoarder, not so much right now since i've deleted most of my unwanted shit, I only kept:
-movies
-tv shows
-wallpapers
-Hr pictures art, war stuff, space stuff too
-useful software and games

Still I need to sort and do a catalog of 30gb of ebooks and 200gb of porn pics. funny thing is...I've deleted my porn folder more times than I can count but it keeps coming back, man

I stopped saving things when I realized that everything is redownloadable faster than it would take me to index and find anything already saved.
>>
>>52380028

Yes. Though it's not always bad to keep some things. Most entertainment can be easily found again even without the use of private trackers.
>>
>>52380028
>he only has 5 harddrives

right now, i have 25TB movies, 11TB TV series, and another 2TB programs/games/random shit.
>>

>>
No, I only use my pc for work and productive things.
>>
Whoah, the thought od wondering how many people such as myself regarding this has been on my mind since I've bought my 2TB HDD a month ago. I have 1TB of anime, I need a lot more storage space regarding that. I have about 70k artwork pieces(around 90k with the ones I since yesterday, due to having only 500MB remaining, must transfer on to my PC library from my phone, and in an orderly fashion(everything sortet, e.g. Vocaloid/Hatsune Miku, Touhou , Kantai Collection/Ecchi++, etc.)).
So yea, atm. I've got a capacity of 3.5TB, and I am on the need of at least 4TB more (backups are mandatory, I don't backup anime though).
>>

I've got what's approaching a TB of music (with most of that in MP3 no less), more manga that's unorganized than I've ever REALLY intended to read, more anime than I've watched (with some encodes probably old enough to be replaced), and TV/movies.
At least I'm not anal enough to have complete Redump and MAME CHD sets yet... but with how availability gets to be sometimes I wonder why the fuck not.

Repair guy here.

My personal stash:
1x NAS with 5x2TB (8TB useable) for personal backups
2 x 3TB, 8 x 2TB, 15 x 1TB external drives for movies and vidya
PC with 2 x 2 TB, 2x 1TB
Laptop with 1 x 2TB, 1 x 1TB
10+ external drives below 1TB

From my repairs/donated/salvaged stash, I have:
4 x 3TB
20+ 2TB
50+ 1TB
And 100+ 750GB or lower drives, mix of SATA,SCSI & PATA all the way down to a 2GB SCSI hdd from 1998.

>self-healing filesystem

Zfs, btrfs, refs etc
>>
>>52384525
zfs or btrfs. I'm currently using 6x3tb hdds in a zraid2 setup on a debian vm on my desktop.
>>
>>52384515
I have quite a strange setup. I don't use raid of any kind, just JBOD. I sync the 3 sets of 2 disks myself using freefilesync. That way I always have a before/after copy and can undo anything I want. I have full control and oif something happens I can pull one of the disks out and connect it to any other machine in my house and it just seems.

I also use shadow copies.
>>
>>52384525

btrfs
>>
>>52384251
I use them to repair peoples computers.
Also, when people have a dead hard drive, if I have the same model, I can replace the drives board and get it running, and in one case I replaced the platters and it spun up long enough for the guy to get his files off it.
>>
>>52384631
>replaced the platters and it spun up long enough for the guy to get his files off it.

>>
>>52384631

>local disk not named "194"

>>
>>52384631
Aren't platters very fragile ? I don't see how you could do this.
>>
I have a 4TB NAS That is getting full and another 4TB in my desktop with all 100+ of my Steam/GOG/Origin games installed.

I also have a ton of archival DVDRs and CDRs
>>
>>52384847
They aren't physically fragile but very sensitive to dust, fingerprints or anything else you can think of.

With a bit of luck and preparation you might actually be able to swap some platters.
>>
>>52384847
It isnt something you can do without preparing for it.

I use my bathroom, I run an air purifyer for about an hour, run the shower for about half an hour, and that will get rid of most of the dust.

Open the hdd (using undusted latex gloves) remove platter on new hdd, replace with old platters.

Now you have to work quickly. I just fit the top back on, plug in, spin up, copy your files.

The hdd WILL die quite quickly after opening it, but it ahould survive long enough to pull what you want off it.
>>
>>52385096

How swappable are the boards. I assume they need to be the same model? I never really considered this option for recovering data. Does the drive just spin up and read or do you need to use recovery software?
>>
>>52385376
Boards are much easier. Make sure they are same model. (On rar occasions, you will have to have the same firmware version)

One platters are replaced, plug drive in, and use just like normal.

Please be aware that if your original platters suffered from a head crash, or you can see scratches on the platter, then there isnt much hope for the data.

some pleb-tier anime, a handful of movies/TV shows that I like, a giant folder of 4chan pics, a music folder that's really small by most people's sandards, some other junk. but all told all this non-porn stuff adds up to only a terabyte or so. but I have it and it's backed up too
>>
I'm a fellow hoarder myself but recently I've started to give cloud storage the cold shoulder

You see, all my hard drives are full disk encrypted and there's really no cloud storage with encryption that doesn't cost a small fortune.

I've been looking at a 128GB flash drive from Samsung, shit only costs 40 bucks and like any other flash drive, it can be full disk encrypted. The big plus here is that you can just clip it onto your keychain and then it becomes kind of like an offsite backup (if your house burns down and you're outside, you probably have your keys with the flash drive attached in your pocket). Another advantage is the write and read speeds. I have 100/100mbit/s internet but i only reach 300KB/s to 3MB/s upload on all the major cloud storage providers kek

You can synchronize and update folders with programs like FreeFileSync etc (with the mirror preset)
>>
>>52389012
well you can always encrypt locally. If your data is encrypted with a key only you hold before it hits the wire, there's nothing untoward the cloud provider can do with it except lose it.
>>
>>52380028

Oldest is 8 years, apparently got it in 2008.
Shizuku says it has been powered on for 27168 hours.
Doesn't sound bad when I say it that way.

I have older drives but not WD Greens.
>>
>>52392962
Are those green drives the same that have super aggressive spin down parameters?
>>
>>52393259
That can be hacked btw, to disable or increase the timer.
>>
>>52393259
Not sure.

WD20EARX, WD20EZRX, and WD20EARS are the 2TB Greens.
>>
>>52380028
I just bulk downloaded several hundred images from a booru that I'm never going to look at again, so I'd say that it's definitely a thing.
>>
>>52393282
From my understanding is that's the only thing that separates a Blue from a Green drive.
>>
>>52383547
Yup, for most anime after a year or 2 it drops to 0 seeds. I only hoard rare stuff that I might never be able to dl again.
>>
>>52393381
Greens are extinct actually, they were merged into the Blue drives.

What you mean to say is that's the only thing separating Blues from Reds :^)

And the extra year of warranty of course.
>>
>>52393392
Not taking account any firmware differences
>>
>>52393406
Firmware is slightly different but the most important change is honestly the head resting one, if you disable that they're very similar. Physically they're not really different however they have been accused of being bin sorted.
>>
>>52393423

That they seem to be identical physically with just different software is pretty fucking retarded and underhanded.
>>
>>52393423
>accused of being bin sorted
They better be in they say the RED's are meant for server use.
>>
>>52393438
Yeah it's disgusting. Thank god the price gap closed, it used to be like double the price to get Reds and all that was different was they loaded a different set of firmware and gave you an extra year of warranty.

Frankly I won't ever be buying them, I'll just stick with hacked Blues.
>>
>>52393454
Yeah but that's based on their firmware not their physical attributes.
>>
>>52382092

I'm kinda into the data hoarding phase because when big brother locks down the internet, i want to have everything at my disposal.

I have cut back. I used to download every album i found, now its mainly ones that i am looking forward to hearing. I tend to download all the smaller foreign movies to keep.

>>
>>52396985
In raid the extra speed from 7200rpm isn't going to mean shit senpai. But yes Reds are a meme, get Blues and hack them.
>>
>>52397081
I don't use raid. They do get bogged down quite easily with random read/writes though.
>>
>>52397140
Then why the fuck would you buy Reds. They're for RAID set ups, even WD doesn't say to get them unless you're RAIDing.
>>
>>52397150
Because I have a microserver with a xeon e3 1260v2 and 4 drives packed into a tiny case, thought I'd have more thermal issues but the drives never go beyond 32C whereas one of my externals reaches 45C easily.

That and they weren't the cheapest or most expensive drives and performance isn't really an issue.
>>

i have 4x2tb wd blacks in my case which i plug in to backup every 6th month.is this a bad thing to do? can somene tell me how to store hard drives not being used and whats generally the best between 2 vs 3 vs 4 tb?

>>
>>52397277
It's literally a meme. I spent hours comparing drives and even among WD drives the labels barely make sense. The green eco drives use more power and are louder than red drives for example. If you're gona call something green you better make sure its the coolest and quietest drive in your own lineup.

Remux is a lossless Bluray rip packaged as an MKV. Internal is an encode release made by a private tracker group to appear transparent to the remux but be much smaller.

>>
>>52398585
:^)
>>
>>52398585
Depends on what you're hoarding.
I have porn that takes 4GB per hour of footage.
That fills harddrives quick.
Or animus where 350MB 30 minute episodes in sets of 12 or 24, with 5-6 of these every half year.
>>
>>52398646
why dont you delete the anime youve already watched? rarely will i finish an anime and think that i might want to rewatch it. most of them are plain terrible, i will never understand anime hoarders
>>
I don't data hoard because I have shit Internet here in the Midwest and only get 25 megabytes download speed Max and commonly I get like 5
>>
>>52380028
It is real. I have 120GB SSD in my laptop and I never needed more.

>>52398557
>480mbit vs 400-800
Which translates to firewire 400 being barely faster than USB 2 and firewire 800 topping out at ~70 which is still shit compared to USB 3 which is more compatible, much more common than firewire and can hit 300mbyte/s and more with UASP.

Most devices I've seen only use the shitty firewire400 ports too which is pointless.

Firewire is dead and was doomed from the start.
