It's not specifically required to have UEFI (X58 boards will take it just fine) but with prebuilt mobos pre-UEFI they are almost guaranteed not to work with Maxwell cards, or at least be PnP.
Typically if someone has a prebuilt and a Maxwell card we tell them to go update the bios, which usually fixes the problem. The problem is that OEMs shit out new models of computers left and right, and often don't keep up with BIOS updates. Only system we've ever gotten any official confirmation of "works fine with a BIOS update" is the Dell XPS 8500/8700.
