Hey /g/
I recently fired up my old PS2 after 10+ years of it being off and unpowered.
I was surprised to see that it still knew the correct time and date. ie it knew it was January 11th, 2016. The actual time of day was only off by half an hour too.
What kind of technology does the PS2 use to be able to accurately keep track of time, in an unpowered state for over 10 years?

Computer motherboards use to have a replaceable CMOS battery like this.

a battery that stays powered for 10 years? yeah i would call that impressive
>>
>>52375161

They do. The only thing they're powering is an internal clock. It's not even a drip feed of power.

My watch batteries barely last 3. That's a nice battery they got there, if it's just a watch battery. I could see other types of batteries lasting that long, but a normal watch battery seems kinda off.
>>
>>52375239
Your watch battery is also powering an LCD display and light. Literally the only thing it's used for in the PS2 is to maintain the internal clock.
>>

Gameboy cartridges have one of those too, my pokemon red has lasted more than 15 years without the battery giving out.
Surprisingly the one inside my newer pokemon silver cartridge died and lost all my progress.
>>
>>52375239
No it's literally like many watch batteries. Watches consume significantly more power, and watches consume shit.

Think of what a watch does, then subtract the most power consuming part: the display.

Most watches don't use a battery the size of a CR2032.
>>
>>52375321
some of em do
>>
Is that battery there for the sole purpose of keeping time? Seems rather pointless if that's its only function
>>
>>52375480
it also keeps the CMOS settings, removing it resets them in case you configure your BIOS wrong and it stops booting
>>
PS2 relevant hardware always. Just bought Gta VCS and Zone of enders brand new
>>
install freemcboot

It uses clock technology.

Meanwhile, in Dreamcast land, after a whopping one month of not powering it on...
