> In 2015 Apple grabbed a 94 percent share of the world's global smartphone profits, sold the only profitable tablets and smartwatch, increased its Mac unit sales,, launched a successful NFC payment platform, took a huge slice of the music streaming market and introduced a new platform for the living room. How can it possibly beat that performance in 2016?
>Apple's competitors have continually failed and 2016 shall be no different.
> Apple is essentially the Professor stranded on Gilligan's Island, except that rather than being the intelligent problem solver for a bunch of goofy half-wits stuck on an island, Apple is competing against them in the global market for electronics.

Of course. Apple knows what customers want and gives it to them at a fair price.

Other companies try to beat us on price but fail to realize Apple's success is from the premium quality of its products.

>94 percent share of the world's global smartphone profits

notice how this is "global smartphone PROFITS" and not "global smartphone USAGE"

as of 2015Q2 iOS only has a ~14% market share compared to Android's ~83%

which means... even if the quoted statistic is true, which it obviously isn't, it just means that 14% of the smartphone market is wasting 94% of their money on new gimmicky bullshit that comes out. more people aren't using more apple phones, fewer people are just getting suckered into buying more of the same more often

while i agree for the purposes of shareholders and the continuation of the company, if only 0.01% of the people who have a smartphone use it and pour a massive amount of money into it, but everyone else dislikes it, then there's a fundamental problem with the devices being manufacturered and they are obviously inferior.

Not really, currently the market is based on how massive the userbase is, there's a reason a lot of startups get sold for billions despite not even making profit yet

Apple's stock is not going to do well in 2016.

Apple doesn't have any compelling new products planned for 2016.

Without a product that will cause waves of people to buy it, Apple's sales and profits in 2016 will not be nearly as high as they've been.

That will cause the stock price to fall.

Apple's chief innovation for 2016 is to take headphone jacks out of their new iPhones

Meanwhile AT&T and everyone else is no longer subsidizing phones, so consumers will be forced to see they're actually paying $1000 for a device with a two year lifespan.

I've had coworkers buy brand new Android phones only to buy iPhones a few months later when the newest models were released. It's so fucking ridiculous. The appeal of the phone is not the phones themselves, but the fact everyone else has one.

They're so outrageously expensive too. It's criminal that people spend so much fucking money on devices that frankly have no right to even BE that expensive. My $60 Windows Phone is just as fucking good as an iPhone in every way.

Consumers are cancerous.
>>

Apple never subsidized phones, but the carriers did. Consumers usually didn't notice the costs to upgrade the phone.

Now that the carriers have split phone costs from the service cost, it has become painfully obvious how expensive the phones are.

People now realize they can save $25-30 a month by continuing to use the phone they already have.
>>
>>52339813
no, for most of the iPhone's history the contract used to cost the same amount for people who got a $200 iPhone at the start and for those who didn't. So you would get more "value" by upgrading every two years.

Then it was more for people who got a phone at the start.

Now, I'm not sure if AT&T is even seeling phones on contract at all.

The iPhone 6S is a better phone. It is not necessarily $589 better than your windows phone...but it is better. To claim anything else is just silly.

I've had someone ask me that.

He also said "iPhones are pretty cheap, they're only $200"

I tried to explain to him the concept of a contract, but he legitimately thought the phone actually only costs $200.

The carriers didn't split the cost of the phone from the cost of service because it was good for consumers.

Big corporations make changes like this for only two reasons:
1) to make more profits
2) because the government forced them to

With the cost of the phone split out, the carriers don't have to eat part of the cost of upgrades that they used to do to keep customers on contracts.

>iTards actually BRAG about getting ripped off

You can't make this shit up.

There's like 50 different smartphone makers out there, of course their margins are razor thin, thus when a customer buys a $500 phone, they're getting their $500 worth due to competition.

When an iDiot buys a $1000 iToy they get a turd that cost $200 to make, of course they're making profit.

TL;DR this is brag worthy ONLY if you own zero apple products and tons of stock. If you own zero apple stock and tons of apple products, you are literally a cuck and a moron.

what annoys me most is iphone shitters saying "wahh, why don't you have a charger i can use? what is this, the 90's?"

also, is it just me or do iphones fucking break so easily? i had to drop my samsung from the top of a worksite before it smashed, and then i just went back to the old galaxy ace which just never stops werking.

meanwhile, my friends and even my sister seem to always be buying new ones because "oh the wifi doesn't work" or "the battery sucks after 6 months".

are reports of shitty quality just swept under the rug, or is my sample size just too small?
>>
>>52339986
But how is it a winning strategy?
There are more people turned off by the high offcontract price
More people are buying from OEMs
More people are bringing unlocked phones and only asking for service

Do providers really make that much more by not eating upgrade costs?

>>
>>52340029
It's because they need to be competitive.

Previously, I would pay the same amount every month whether I took my $600 subsidy every two years or not.

Now, I can save that $600, and every else can choose to pay $600 every two years if they want.

Similar situation, but subtly way shittier for handset manufacturers, and Apple in particular
>>
>>52340028
>also, is it just me or do iphones fucking break so easily?
half iphone users i work with have a cracked screen, it's hilarious

girl i worked with had a 4s with a cracked screen. her birthday came up and she bought herself a present by getting a 6. a month later it had a nice, beautiful crack going right down the middle.

women are not very good at handling things anyway
>>
>>52340029

Carriers don't care if you buy a new phone anymore. Each phone they sold probably cost them profits. They just want you to use their service.

Running a mobile phone service is extremely profitable.

That's why some of them pay to get you to switch. They know that most people are too lazy to switch without a good reason, so once you're with a provider, you'll probably stay with them for years.
>>
>>52338017
>launched a successful NFC payment platform

>>
>>52340083
the cracked screen phenomenon is hilarious to me as well. i don't think i know anyone without a giant chunk out of a corner of their iphone, or huge shatters that give me OCD on the spot.

could be bullshit, but a guy i knew who worked as a phone and tablet repair guy reckons apple produce their phones to crack easily on purpose. like a tax on the clumsy.

iphones are actually pretty durable under controlled tests, but feature phones are not designed to be handled by actual humans. they're designed to be looked at--oooed and awed at.

sacrificing durability for visual appeal is exactly why the phone case industry is so big. carriers don't have to concern themselves with protection when phone cases provided enough.

those big bulky plasticy budget prepaid phones are shit loads more durable than $400+ flagship phones.

Nothing should prevent the phone from working should the front glass be cracked.
The glass is just glass, it's there to be a surface and to see through, nothing more.
If the screen behind the glass gets damaged then you can get problems. That usually has the capacitive layer built into it which does the sensing of touches.
>>
>>52340145
Yeah, I'm actually pretty pleased with how this turned out.

Remember when phones were locked to carriers? That's why they subsidized them. You could get a cheap phone from the carrier and then you wouldn't leave for two years. In retrospect that is serious bullshit. Consumers had no choice but to buy new phones every two years indirectly through carriers because of arbitrarily locked carrier code stuff. And by 'had no choice' I mean, had a choice, but the rational choice was that.

And my AT&T bill actually went down for that one year until I switched to Fi because it's cheaper still.
>>
>>52340161
>>52340190

well, i was going to go on and say, from my experience the sonys and samsungs are far more durable, and in the event you happen to destroy them, like when i accidentally slapped mine mid-air off of a stairwell, they cost something like $100 to replace, because the screen's totally fucked. makes sense i suppose.

this guy's theory was that apple make them so easy to crack, but still run, so people can't blame the iphones for have shitty durability. instead, iDrones faggots just insist everyone who drops them is just a clumsy asshole.

meanwhile, the third parties who pay apple for parts and licensing make a killing on drunk female weekend warriors who drop their iphones every other week on their way home from $3 spirits nights.

Apple's R&D is actually pretty fuckin' good since they've acquired the ARM, hence why they overshadow the majority of performances in single thread (over two fucking cores too); they strongly focus on really simple things to do, limited, unexpandable, but Apple will throw in a lot of gimmicks like "fully waterproofing at all kPa!!", whilst slacking on screen size, cache, multitasking, and LPDDR4.

btw folks, watch out for handset manufacturers stepping up their planned obsolescence game. People no longer have an incentive to buy phones every two years by default.

Basically the entire handset manufacturing business has been an unsustainable pile of shit for it's entire existence, and now they need to innovate on their unsustainability.

Here are there options now that carriers are no longer indirectly forcing people to buy phones:
1. Phones get materially better (haha, no. Inherently unsustainable)
2. People think phones are better (advertising, shilling)
3. Their current phones become unusable

Apple probably realizes this, which is why they're desperately trying to make a fucking minivan which actually has some room for improvements
They're also desperately trying to shill you on more consumer electronics (pencils, tablets, watches). They might even make it, but phone, laptop and desktop growth is fucking done.

actually, speaking of carrier locking and shit, i don't know about elsewhere in the world, but in australia i noticed something interesting about our telecoms.

i've always bought outright and used prepaid mobile plans, so when i upgraded my phone this last time, i decided it was probably time to look at what prepaid plans they still had.

unsurprisingly, my plan was a legacy plan that you could no longer sign up for. limited call and text, free shit for intra-carrier calls/texts, small amount of data and unmetered "social media data" for things like facebook.

what did surprise me was the new plans, with completely free and unlimited call and texts to any numbers, which i never thought i'd see in my fucking, but with -marginally- larger data packages. from 3gb/month to something like 5gb/month.

i guess they're wising up to the fact data is more important to consumers in 2016, because there's no sign of anything even similar to "unmetered social media data"
