I finally decided to switch to linux on my laptop today and want to know which desktop environment /g/ uses.

great post mate

gnome 3.18 here
>>
I recommend GNOME for a consistent, polished, and overall nice experience.

im trying to decide between kde and cinnamon but i think im leaning more towards cinnamon

Filthy casual. Install Arch and i3 then we can talk.
>>
>>52331809
If you have more than 5 gigs of ram go for Gnome
kde 4 is nice aswell, i personally prefer XFCE4
>>

Yeah you'll be back to your previous OS within a week. If you actually want to stay go for the distros that actually work (The *buntus and Mint, Debian, etc)
>>
>>52331809
Cinnamon for eyecandy and a just werks approach
MATE for extra customization
>>
xfce

I use arch and gnome, pretty nice.
>>
>>52331999
ive used linux before its just that this time im not dual booting
>>
>>52331999
the first linux os i installed is arch and i was using it for whole summer, it was stable and cool as fuck yet i coulndnt get usb automount working since i was like 14 or something. If one can read , then one can use arch if one really wants to.
>>
>>52331809
Install ALL the de's and wm's you want to try. Yes.. all of them in the same box. But first decide which login manager you want. Choose wisely.
>>
>>52331809
make sure you install tlp because gnome suck battery

I recommend GNOME if you have a desktop
MATE if you a laptop

GNOME is okay for laptop but need some tweaks to increase battery life
>>
>>52332032
Me too. It works great with two monitors.
>>
>>52332103
>login manager
I'm going to suggest skipping LDM because it's been nothing but a problem lately.
>>
>>52332103
isn't no login manager + startx on login the right option since forever on arch?
>>
>>52331809
mate, gnome 3 still needs a lot of work. I don't know why anyone would use gnome 3 on a desktop
>>
GNOME
>>
>>52331809
Openbox is a little tough to get started on but it's comfy as fuck once you do, plus it runs on like 0 system resources, very light weight
>>52332172
But display managers just look nice, much more friendly and comfy than booting to a command line
>>
>>52331999
>>52332095
I installed gentoo as my first linux almost a decade ago, you young ones seriously need to step it up, losers.
>>
>>52332172

Not even startx recommends using startx.

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/xinit/tree/startx.cpp
>>
>>52332376
i dont really want to compile everything for a desktop pc anon. its not that i cant , it just takes long and burns my cpu.
>>
>>52332172
How well would that work with multiple wm de options? (Not saying not possible .)
>>
>>52332239
because it's nice and mate sucks unless you're strictly about the traditional desktop
>>
>>52332411
The times have moved on, young man. It doesn't even take two hours for a full system recompile these days. There really is no excuse anymore. Apart from being complex as fuck, fuck that shit why the fuck can't you solve these reverse dependencies yourself? fuck you portage.
>>
>>52331979
Rampant unbridled fanboyism.
>>
>>52332239
mate is good but it lacks a good compositor (vsync) and the startup thing when the theme changes is weird looking, and no compton doesnt cut it for nvidia. I wish gnome 3 had all these features/options/menus but i like the search in gnome/nautilus too.
>>
>>52331809
Pink a random spin of ubuntu and be glad you did
>>
>>52332461
i literally tried to compile core KDE 3 months ago , cpu is i5 4670. i lost patience after 2-3 hours. And im sure i told it to use 4 cores, but maybe i used too "good" optimization method (i dont remember what the setting was called but you choose something about opimization and i used the 1 slower than recommended so maybe i failed)
>>
>>52332474
don't forget that its task manager just looks weird. I don't know how to explain it but it lacks something like a strong profile i guess. Not to mention the never ending memory leaks it suffers. The lacking wayland support is a minus too. Op should just go with free drivers and gnome wayland.
>>
>>52332544
Yeah there are a few manual steps involved to make it hurry the fuck up. for example putting /var/tmp/portage on tmpfs and using --jobs=4 and all cores for makeopts. That alone should make it pretty fast. I don't use any optimization apart form -march=native. but i guess the best method to make it fast to have many cores. AMD is better in that regard, even if they share their cache.
>>
>>52332556
they will add wayland support to MATE. It has good loading times and sensible desktop experience imo , but it gets behind in terms of some new hip features. It feels like using win xp in our era , but without the 4gb ram limit and with some stupid bugs that should really be fixed with high priority.
>>
>>52332632
Wouldnt gnome classic work just as well for people who dont like how gnomes 3 desktop is handled?
>>
>>52331809
Gnome shell is really good
Its quite fast, You need to add some extensions to get fully functionality
But its fast and qt
also
its linux
sooner or later You will try other DE`s (or WM`s)
>>
>>52331809
They use a really fucking crippled down version of FVMW2 at my job and I hate its guts.
>>
>>52332632
I understand, I'm just too addicted to media player controls with cover and rating and all that fancy shit perfectly integrated in the volume popup.

>>52332689
It's just a different shell skin, that's not really the good old gnome experience.
>>
>>52331809
KDE Plasma >= 5.5 together with Qt 5.5.1.
Any older than that, and you'll encounter crashes, but that combindation is rock solid.
Don't forget to switch off Akonadi, though. You can keep baloo, it's actually very useful.
>>
>>52332689
its hard to tell, i for one would get annoyed as fuck that the "programs" and "places" menus dont have the build in search thats in nautilus/shell. In other words if it wasnt gnome shell with classic mode put on top of it , but a classic mode with gnome shell functionality inside it
>>
i use openbox+tintrc, with obmenu, obconf, and tint2conf for streamlinged configuration. it just werks.
>>
>>52331809
XFCE. Not that good, but it's very light so I don't care. Would use Gnome 3 if I had more RAM.
>>
Every time i use gnome i end up using kde programs for the functionality. I don't get why they fuck it up so much with nautilus. Why don't they put more love in that, it is literally the only program more important than the shell itself. I like that you can actually theme gtk but that never holds me long and i am back to kde again.

i loved kde when it was mature kde 3 or 4 but right now im annoyed as fuck by it and the search in nautilus is really nice compared to dolphin. I also used nautilus long enough to forget what features are missing , but i deep in my soul that they fucked up.
>>
>>52332855
dolphin can assign different views for folders and subfolders, and it sticks to them. The date column in all views behaves the same way, in nautilus sorting the files per date have different meanings in different view modes (one sorts for creation date the other for modify date but both named the same). I also make extensive use of the filter bar in dolphin, it is fucking satisfying to just type a little and get everything relevant in the current folder filtered instantly, you can even sticky the filter and navigate through the fodlers that way. Nautilus just fires up the search and presents you with a different view outside of the folder context. Not to mention it takes a few seconds for that to show up. That's most of my usage right there down the shitter.

Installing arch on your first time? You are going to hate linux. It's like starting out with differential equations when learning math. You CAN do it that way, but it is not very sensible.
>>
>>52332986
The biggest advantage dolphin has is the built in terminal.
So often you have to run a quick command in the folder you are in and having a terminal all the time is glorious.
If you have never used that, try to press f4 and have your life changed.

It depends entirely on your hardware. Firefox alone takes that much on my system.
>>
>>52335152
I'm debating installing KDE just for dolphin. Is there a lightweight way to use dolphin in something like xfce? Thunar is nice, but similar to nautilus it simply lacks features.

Let's go through the usual suspects.

If you want a cohesive, slick system, GNOME.
If you want more eye candy, KDE.
If you want more minimalism/performance, Xfce.
If you want even more minimalism/performance LXDE.
If you want ricing and tiling, i3.
If you want a nice good old retro feel, MATE.
If you want something 'familiar', Cinnamon.
If you just want to show off, Pantheon.
>>
Unity. GNOME 3 is fucked and everything else looks ugly and out dated.

xfce4 here. It's simple and it works.

Because the default theme looks like ass. That and Kubuntu puts KDE to shame. Really, if you want KDE, use anything but Kubuntu.

>>52332172
If you have a single DE installed maybe.

This is a meme, I tried debian for like a week before using arch and I couldn't do shit on it, no packages and weird work around to get the sofware you wanted, AUR is too valuable to pass up might as well start with it

So what is the consensus on what to install if coming from Windows 10?

I should add that Windows is all that I've ever used.
