My gf gave me an old mini-laptop with 2GB ram and a 1.6 ghz processor. What games can this system play adequately? I like rpgs and shooters, maybe military strategy. I just want todownload a few games to play. Thanks.

OP here, the laptop does not have a seperate graphics card, it has an intel 945 chipset or whatever. Quake 3 and C&C games sound good. Can I use Steam on this comp and can I get those games on Steam? Ive never used it as I got away from PC gaming for awhile. And thanks for all the replies. I will check out /vr

You can but last I checked, the Steam client can take around 180mb~200mb of RAM. If you're really limited, you can always skip it with a nocdcrack from gamecopyworld.

But could also be an old Core2 or AMD Turion.

Yeah the E-450s specially are not that bad, the graphics are actually decent for a ultra low power system.
Memory throughput and processor speed does leave something to be desired compared to anything not low power.
It is just not good for any recent games with advanced graphics.

Over at ISOzone, some guy created a Portable DOSBOX RTS collection. It's in DVD ISO form right at 4 gigs. Or you could put it on a thumb drive if you wanted. You just open it and choose the game to play. It's all preconfigured.
