Why is Windows 10 so dark, flat and depressing? Is Microsoft trying to win over the edgy Linux crowd? Windows 7's Aero feels like a breath of fresh air in comparison.

W10 strikes me as a try-hard minimalist look, i.e. basic Linux user desktop.

Yes, you can change the colour but you no longer have a hue slider. Even then, everything is still flat. There is no clear distinction between the task bar and wallpaper.
Further, switching between the "metro" style and the legacy aero style makes me nauseous. Why is there both the settings menu AND control panel?

That's odd. It looks, to me, like Microsoft took Windows 7's desktop environment and smooshed the Windows 8 Metro UI to the right side of the start menu, which I imagine is more or less what Microsoft actually did. Aside from some tweaks that could have been delivered in the form of a Windows 7 service pack, did you expect them to actually do much else with the usability of Windows?
