Sounds more like Verizon was at fault in my opinion, if you watch the whole video the newscaster contacted the university who said their course system was OS agnostic and he also contacted Verizon who said they'd send a tech crew to setup the connection for her.
If either Verizon had the foresight to just ship a copy of the Linux software or an instruction manual on how to setup the connection manually(I assume an OSX version of their software is standard on the disc as well as the Windows one), or this stupid bitch had called Verizon rather than Dell or a news channel her problems could have been resolved in minutes.
