What file system do I choose for my new external HDD that is supported on Windows Linux and OS X?

I do however think exFat is not supported OOTB by Linux and you have to install the driver first.
It is supported OOTB by Windows and OSX tho

NTFS. It's shit but it's compatible ootb with everything out there but MacOS, and you can get that with a number of software.

FAT32 and use mkvmerge to split up large movie files.
I am using exFat for transferring data between Mac and PC, works great.
