What does /g/ think about Linux Mint 17.3 MATE.
MATE is a relic of the past and caters to a desktop metaphor that's quickly depreciating and gnu/linux to this day has never been able to successfully get "right"

I think its better off with Cinnamon since its a fork of newer tech, but Mint is good.

I use Mate because Cinnamon has always been laggy in comparison, even on modern hardware. Also Cinnamon carries over a lot of annoying shit from Gnome 3, which most people are trying to get away from. It's pretty rare to see someone using Gnome 3 unironically.
Fedora MATE/Compiz is better
Ubuntu MATE if you insist on using APT.

Mint is a derivative of a derivative. Debian evolved into Ubuntu and Mint is just taking that code, fuck it up with bloat via Cinnamon.
If you like start menu and lightweight speedy distro, Xubuntu is your candidate.
I like MATE but they've barely changed anything since forking the project. You could compile the last GNOME 2 release from 2011 (?) and get the exact same experience (in fact you might get a better one since iirc MATE stripped out some programs from gnome2)

Mate and Gnome 2 were superseded by Cinnamon. Only Xfce retains the original feeling of Gnome 2 with Applications menu.
