will occulus rift actually be something good or just hype for nothing?
>>
its uncomfortable to wear and you have to look behind you which is annoying and lame when sitting or whatever. its a gimmick but some minority will like it
>>
>>52165429
>its uncomfortable to wear
how come? I can wear a bike helmet all day. why should be this different?
>>
>>52165505
its heavy, it clamps, it gets sweaty in there if you dont have AC on. bike helmets attach at the chin and let the face breathe
>>
>>52165546
so it's a purely ergonomic problem. Sounds like they need someone who knows what he is doing.
>>
>>52165377
Owned by fucking Facebook. Have some self-respect, and avoid this product. There are others like it, and there will be more to follow. Don't be a cuck.
>>
>you wont need a facebook account to interact online
>it isnt a ploy to create a database of retina signatures

this is what normalfags actually believe
>>
>>52165377
Should be awesome. I just built a new pc for running it. All I need is a new gpu, which I'll buy when it releases.
>>
>>52165738
You're a good goyim
>>
so it's made by facebook and controlled by an xbox 360 controller

welcome to le future
>>
>>52165626
So how about HTC vive?
>>
>>52167470
They're supported by Valve so that's fine. Much better than Facebook.
>>
>>52165546
Can't wait 'til we see people with oculus shaped acne patterns
>>
>>52165789
back at you
>>
It will be great.
>>
Stereoscopic 3d is awesome. and you can see for yourself using a $15 Google cardboard and a 1080p+ smartphone
>>
i dont see how something made by facebook can ever be good
>>
>>52169372
It's not made by Facebook, it's made by Oculus which happens to be owned by Facebook.
>>
>>52169376
same thing
>>
>>52169393
No it's not. Oculus have lots of experience with VR devices even from before they were involved with Facebook and will create a great product. If Facebook themselves tried to create a VR device they'd be years behind on RnD and create a bad product.
>>
>>52169411
that doesnt matter as long as oculus has any connection with facebook
>>
>>52169482
How so?
>>
>>52165738
wait for
pascal
>>
>>52169491
giving your money to facebook is just stupid
>>
>>52169523
How does it make the rift a bad product is what I am asking.
>>
>>52165590
They cant mount it any other way without adding significant weight. Adding a counter balance would put a lot more of strain on the neck.

The closest ergonomic option would be to have a reflection of a screen located on top of the head like a bike helmet, but then you can't calibrate specific settings to give the wearer depth.

The way it works now is good. People spend $300+ on phones like it is nothing, they will definitely purchase this as a worthwhile accessory.

It's marketed well, and is convincing enough to be a real tracked head mouted display, and better games and programs will come with time.
>>
>>52167565
Dear god.
>>
What the actual fuck. How can any of you talk about the Rift or the Vive and say they're uncomfortable when you haven't tried them? Don't even bring up shit like the DK2, that has nothing to do with the modern hardware now. I've tried them out and they're comfy as fuck. I could use them for hours. The Rift was more comfy though (but keep in mind the only version of the Vive that has been shown is a dev kit version). It feels like wearing a baseball cap if it made more contact with your face. It's light as hell. Obviously not as light as an actual baseball cap but you get what I mean.
>>
>>52169644
This defensiveness is the biggest warning sign.
>>
It's a product with no mainstream audience whatsoever.

Congratulations! You've developed a new type of head-strapped screen with better immersion. This might be immensely useful if ordinary people (e.g. not hardcore gamers or nerdy children) were really interested in escapism and immersion....oh wait...
>>
>>52167499
you are a good goy
>>
>>52170159
Yeah all the the people who would actually want VR are just going to get vive
>>
>>52170159
>ordinary people
>not interested in escapism
What the fuck do you think TV and reality shows are
>>
>>52171580
They certainly ain't escapism...particularly not reality TV, that's the furthest thing from escapism possible.

Escapism is about an immersive escape from our reality.

Reality TV isn't an escape from reality, that's why it's CALLED "Reality TV". It is merely a window within our reality to peer at somebody else's life.
>>
It will flop gloriously
People will only think it's cool only until their neck starts hurting and/or they throw up. It's uncomfortable and causes motion sickness.
>>
It's gonna be great.
>>
2d porn
>>
>>52165377
gonna suck huge hairy balls, holohoax lens looks pretty sweet desu.
>>
>>52171645
I take it you've never watched reality TV. That's okay, I don't blame you. But the category of show is actually called 'escapism' on TV channels.
>>
>>52171893
I guess my mistake is not pointing out that escapism is a pretty broad term.

It's not synonymous with immersion, which is what VR is supposed to be. And Reality TV isn't immersive. You don't feel like you are in the head of the people you are watching, and you don't feel like you are actually there.

The experience is more similar to peering through a magic looking glass and spying on what people are doing on the other side of the world. So that's kind of like a regular TV thing and not a VR thing.
>>
>>52172156
Escapism and immersion are distinct things. Normies don't want immersion, but does immersion bring escapism?
Proponents of VR will say yes.
>>
>>52172176
Immersion is just a single form of escapism. Escapism is not a homogeneous type of feeling but a group of distracting forms of entertainment.
>>
>>52172237
I disagree with your definition of escapism.
>>
>>52165429
>i have never actually try it and make take my assumptions out of the ass

just wait until cv1 is released which supposedly feels like a basecap in weight distribution at under 200grams... even my headphones weigh 360 grams and i can wear them all day

>>52165626
fuck facebook, they only invest in the technology. google and apple swallow tech companies everyday aswell so facebook took the first opportunity and what better platform does exist to spread the word about virtual reality?

>>52167288
it's not made by facebook, just a huge investment for them. it's a wireless xbox one controller which comes optional with the rift

>>52167499
>they are supported by the company which wanted to make a fortune out of game mods

like someone already said, good goym.

>>52169523
the rift is heavily subsidized by the cause that facebook actually want to "help VR". if oculus would be independent of facebook, the current CV1 they plan to deliver would cost above 1000$ but will probably sit between 300$ and 400$

>>52170036
the defensivness in this code is provided by someone who actually wants to enjoy VR tech and want technology to evolve unlike you fucking cuck. your existence on /g/ should be dropped right now.

>>52171645
you are just intelligent enough to understand the concept of reality tv. dumb people though, take it granted and enjoy watching the shit out of it and compare it with their shitty life.
reality tv, is escapism more than you will ever think about it.
just go outside and meet some dumb people, they will happily tell you about reality tv.

>>52171709
the neck won't hurt under 2 hours unless they are not doing any sports for 20 years. the motion sickness only applies if the picture is not smooth at steady fps or it makes uncomprehensible moves, from my experience.

>>52172237
escapism is a state of mind that wants to disconnect with the real world problems. this can be simply done with locking yourself into a room and getting sucked up by anime for ex

It'll be shit like all other PC and console VR implementations. Smart Phones is where it is going to be at.

>minimal time to setup on the go
>no wires
>largest user base
>idiot proof
>no shitbox to setup
>no wires

PSVR and rift/vive will enjoy their niche of a niche for a shortlived while until VR is popular enough for mainstream adoption.

The average joe sure as hell isn't going to buy a kiddie console or buy a nerd box to experience VR. No for that they will use their phones.
>>
>>52173158
and yet the gear vr is horrible, heavy, hot and sweaty. My bro bought one and i used it for about 20 min and then just made fun of him for wasting his money. Its DOA
>>
>>52173158
good luck running any kind of immersive interactive experience without latency on a smart phone. gear vr is only good for watching gimmicky 360 vr videos, everyone who have used a vive/rift and gear vr says gear vr is shit.
